The Perceptions And Experiences Of Intensive In-Home Counselors Regarding Vicarious Trauma, Tara Ross
The Perceptions And Experiences Of Intensive In-Home Counselors Regarding Vicarious Trauma, Tara Ross
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of the study was to explore intensive in-home counselors’ perceptions and experiences with vicarious trauma when providing in-home services to children. The constructivist self-development theory was used to explain how helpers develop vicarious trauma after exposure to traumatic stories of clients. A generic qualitative inquiry was the methodology for this study because it focused on illuminating the participants’ experiences, and offered a highlighted description of the participants’ awareness, consciousness, and understanding, which explored those personal experiences. The study consisted of 10 adults between the ages of 31 and 62. The participants were all African American. Semi structured interviews …
Intimate Partner Violence Education In An Outpatient Setting, Juddy Morgan
Intimate Partner Violence Education In An Outpatient Setting, Juddy Morgan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Intimate partner violence/domestic violence (IPV/DV) has been a widely recognized yet preventable public health concern. Despite the increased attention to IPV/DV, there has been a lack of knowledge in recognizing its symptoms and referring victims to appropriate community services by staff in a mental health outpatient clinic. The purpose of this project was to provide the clinic staff with the knowledge to recognize symptoms of IPV/DV victims and refer them to appropriate services within the community. The educational intervention was designed to increase the clinic staff’s knowledge of recognizing victims of IPV/DV; becoming familiar with the Hurt, Insult, Threaten, Scream …

Association Between Opioid-Related Emergency Department Visits And Financial Liability Of Hospitals, Mary-Zitta Muabe
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Emergency departments (EDs) are experiencing an influx of patients with opioid-related which result in increased opioid misuse, abuse, and overdoses. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between opioid-related ED visits and financial liability of hospitals by evaluating if an increase in opioid-related ED visits leads to an increase in average ED visit costs. The framework used for this study was Reason’s theory of failures, which involves improving healthcare maturity in terms of risk management, achieved through enhanced efficiency. The analyzed research questions included analysis between the number of opioid-related ED visits and financial liability of hospitals …
Crisis Intervention Team Training On Autism Among Female Cit-Trained Police Officers, Julie Hall
Crisis Intervention Team Training On Autism Among Female Cit-Trained Police Officers, Julie Hall
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this qualitative case study was the lack of documentation that supports the perceptions and experiences of crisis intervention team (CIT) trained female police officers related to their encounters with persons with mental illness (PwMI) with autism. Using Giles’s communicative accommodation theory (CAT), the purpose of this study examined the perceptions of CIT-trained female police officers of PwMI with autism during encounters. Giles’s CAT was aligned closest with the teachings of CIT training. Seven participants provided data which comprised of completed questionnaires and transcribed interviews. The method of analysis used was a combination of inductive coding and …
Covid-19 Vaccination In Palestine/Israel: Citizenship, Capitalism, And The Logic Of Elimination, Nicolas Howard, Emily Schneider
Covid-19 Vaccination In Palestine/Israel: Citizenship, Capitalism, And The Logic Of Elimination, Nicolas Howard, Emily Schneider
Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Despite Israel’s responsibility under international law to combat the spread of contagious diseases and epidemics in its occupied territories, Israeli officials have refused to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Through a critical discourse analysis of Israeli officials’ statements regarding Israel’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign, this paper explores how Israel evades this responsibility while presenting itself as committed to public health and human rights. We find that Israeli officials strategically present Palestinians as an autonomous nation when discussing COVID-19 vaccinations, despite Israel’s ongoing attempts to prevent the creation of a Palestinian state. Relatedly, Israel justifies …
The Effects Of Charity Hospital Privitization And Medicaid Expansion On Medicaid Patient Emergency Department Utilization In Louisiana, Sean M. Prados
The Effects Of Charity Hospital Privitization And Medicaid Expansion On Medicaid Patient Emergency Department Utilization In Louisiana, Sean M. Prados
All ETDs from UAB
Two significant events transpired in Louisiana that had sweeping changes for the healthcare system between 2013 and 2016: (1) the privatization of the nation's only stateowned Charity Hospital System via cooperative endeavor agreements with local, private hospitals known as public-private-partnerships (PPP), and (2) the implementation of Medicaid expansion, referred to as implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Either event independently could have had significant utilization and financial implications for hospitals. This retrospective, quasi-experimental research implemented a generalized estimating equation (GEE) analysis to examine the effects of PPP and ACA on Medicaid patient emergency department utilization by PPP hospital designation, …
The Relationship Between Housing/Living Arrangement And Admission To Drug Treatment Centers In Virginia, Odessa Ochoa
The Relationship Between Housing/Living Arrangement And Admission To Drug Treatment Centers In Virginia, Odessa Ochoa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Homeless veterans with substance use disorders are among the most vulnerable and inaccessible populations in Virginia, which is evident by the lack of state and local resources. This cross-sectional study was conducted to present a retrospective assessment of the Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) to develop an understanding of the impact of housing arrangements on admission to long-term drug treatment centers among veterans in Virginia. To guide the study, the socioecological model was selected as the theoretical framework to better examine and understand the relationship between housing/living arrangement and admission to drug treatment centers among Virginia veterans. The aim of …
The Experiences Of Female Survivors Of Sexual Assault When They Make A Police Report, Tracy L. Rainey
The Experiences Of Female Survivors Of Sexual Assault When They Make A Police Report, Tracy L. Rainey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nearly 20% of all women will be the victim of an attempted or completed sexual assault within the United States, yet less than one quarter of victims will report their experienced crime to law enforcement (LE). Many survivors of sexual violence experience apprehension about reporting sexual assault, due to fear of social consequences, relational consequences, and fear of the reprisal from LE officers. The purpose of this interpretive descriptive qualitative study was to describe and interpret the experiences of adult, female sexual assault survivors when they make a LE report about their victimization. Resilience theory, which is the study of …

Academic Health Science Centers And Health Disparities: A Qualitative Review Of The Intervening Role Of The Electronic Health Record And Social Determinants Of Health, Wies Rafi
Theses and Dissertations
Literature on the magnitude of negative health outcomes from health disparities is voluminous. Defined as the health effects of racism, environmental injustice, forms of discrimination, biases in science, and sociological or socioeconomic predictors across populations, health disparities are part of an ongoing and complicated national problem that health equity programs are specifically designed to address. Academic Health Science Centers (AHC) institutions are a complex and unique educational-healthcare ecosystem that often serves as a safety net for patients in vulnerable and lower-income communities. These institutions are often viewed as one of the most uniquely positioned entities in the U.S. with an …
Family History Of Substance Problems Among African Americans: Associations With Drug Use, Drug Use Disorder, And Prescription Drug Misuse, Rebecca Mahrs-Gould
Family History Of Substance Problems Among African Americans: Associations With Drug Use, Drug Use Disorder, And Prescription Drug Misuse, Rebecca Mahrs-Gould
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Understanding individual risk for substance use and substance use disorders is important in the efforts of reducing risk and prevention of these problems. A family history of alcohol and/or drug problems often increases the risk for these problems, however the majority of research in this area is conducted in samples that are predominantly White. African Americans face disparate outcomes from substance use and substance use disorders, and the risks for substance problems may not be the same as for Whites. A systematic review of the literature identified nine studies that examined a family history of either substance problems or …
Attachment Theory To Inform Intervention In Correctional Populations With Adverse Childhood Experiences And Substance Use Disorders, Samantha Mendoza
Attachment Theory To Inform Intervention In Correctional Populations With Adverse Childhood Experiences And Substance Use Disorders, Samantha Mendoza
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Research shows a correlation exists between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and poor mental health such as psychiatric and substance use disorders (Adshead, 2018). Research further suggests a correlation between ACEs and insecure attachment in adults (Adshead, 2018). The National Institute on Drug Abuse (2020) estimates 85% of the correctional population either has a substance use disorder or was incarcerated for a drug-related offense. This paper theorizes that those involved in the correctional system with a history of high ACE scores and substance use also experience insecure attachment, which is not currently addressed in correctional SUD programs. Attachment theory moderates the …
Dancing Between Two Worlds: Training Experiences Of Dual Credentialed Counselors, Lisa Rudduck
Dancing Between Two Worlds: Training Experiences Of Dual Credentialed Counselors, Lisa Rudduck
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Several challenges exist in the implementation of integrated care given that SUD/Addiction treatment has historically been segregated from the broader health care system (Office of the Surgeon General, 2016). One expression of the gap that persists is that for counselors who want to administer SUD/Addiction and mental health counseling, or co-occurring services, in Washington State they are required to satisfy state requirements for two separate credentials. The purpose of this study was to conduct an in-depth exploration into the training experiences of Dual Credentialed Counselors (DCCs) in Washington State where two separate credentials are required to administer co-occurring counseling. In …
It Permeated Everything: A Lived Experience Of Slow Violence And Toxicological Disaster, Tara Jo Holmberg
It Permeated Everything: A Lived Experience Of Slow Violence And Toxicological Disaster, Tara Jo Holmberg
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Impacts of disasters on individuals are dependent on numerous factors: local to international political dynamics, socioeconomics, geography, educational background, and outside support among others. Currently, much of disaster research focuses on those of natural origin, acute and large-scale environmental events, emergency management, and the ability of individuals, communities, and societies to prepare for, and recover from, likely known disasters in their region. However, there is a lack of data about individual experiences through ‘invisible’ anthropogenic disasters, especially those that fall under the umbrella of slow environmental violence (Davies, 2019; Rice, 2016). Through critical phenomenological autoethnography, I examine an individual experience …

Methods: in a cross-sectional descriptive study, 129 participants were recruited from female penitentiaries in the state of Acre. Conducted between August and …
Unpacking The Influence Of Islamic Religious Culture And Individual Religious Affiliation On Testing Hiv-Positive, Brittany Hayes, Amy Adamczyk
Unpacking The Influence Of Islamic Religious Culture And Individual Religious Affiliation On Testing Hiv-Positive, Brittany Hayes, Amy Adamczyk
Publications and Research
The distribution of HIV cases varies cross-nationally. We separate the influences of Islam at the macro-and micro-levels to understand the role of religion in shaping the spread of HIV. Drawing on biomarker data from the Demographic and Health Surveys, we construct a multilevel database (Individual N= 568,476; Country N= 30). We examine a series of national-and individual-level predictors that may mediate the relationship between Islam and testing HIV-positive. Individual religious affiliation and proportion Muslim retained their risk-reducing effects even when accounting for a range of mediators and suppressors. Islam has a sui generis effect on testing HIV-positive.

The Role Of Human Dopamine Transporter Threonine 261 And Serine 262 In Amphetamine Regulation Of Transporter Function And Surface Expression, Sina Abdollahi
Theses and Dissertations
Amphetamine (AMPH) has been used clinically and recreationally around the world for years. A 2021 study reports a 67.5% rise in AMPH use from 2010-2017 across all fifty states. Study also shows that 30% of patients with AMPH-induced psychosis end up with primary psychosis over time. AMPH works by inhibiting monoamine (Norepinephrine (NE), Serotonin (5-HT), and Dopamine (DA) reuptake followed by triggering transporter mediated monoamine release and consequently increases monoamine concentrations in extracellular synaptic space. AMPH also works as a substrate for monoamine transporters, enters the neuron, and once its inside the neuron, it will prevent the storage of monoamines …

Correlates Of Risky Sexual Behaviors Among African American Females In Juvenile Detention Centers, Eghosa E. Asemota
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Introduction: In comparison to other demographics, research shows that African American female adolescents are over-represented in the United States Juvenile Justice System. Studies in this vulnerable population demonstrate higher rates of engagement in unsafe sex, and its attendant negative consequences of HIV infections, sexually transmitted diseases, and mistimed pregnancies. There is a paucity of studies that have specifically examined risky sexual behaviors amongst African American females in Juvenile Detention Centers. Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between the individual, family, peer, and societal factors, and engagement in risky sex among Black female detainees in Juvenile …

Acknowledgment Of Culture And Stereotypes: Black Participants’ Perceptions Of Specific Therapist Behaviors, Tsotso T. Ablorh
Acknowledgment Of Culture And Stereotypes: Black Participants’ Perceptions Of Specific Therapist Behaviors, Tsotso T. Ablorh
Graduate Masters Theses
Mental health disparities for Black people of diverse ethnicities compared to people of other racial identities has been well-documented (Alegría et al., 2008; Maura & Weisman de Mamani, 2017). Research addressing this pervasive systemic and interpersonal problem often focuses on client-related factors that create or intensify barriers to care. However clinician-related factors (i.e., racial identity, multicultural training, implicit biases, behavior, etc.) also have a significant impact on barriers to care, retention in therapy, and clinical outcomes for people of African descent (Larrison & Schoppelrey, 2011; Owen, Imel, Adelson, & Rodolfa, 2012). Researchers suggest that the favoring of historically white perspectives, …

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Adolescent Intervention Program (AIP), a faith-based drug and alcohol recovery program for teens. This is an alternative to jail program. Nearly 1 in 10 Americans, 12 years or older (20.1 million people), have a substance use disorder (SUD), involving alcohol or illicit drugs (National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, 2019). The average age of first-time alcohol or substance use is 13 years old and nine out of ten addictions start in the adolescent years (National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, 2019). Adolescents with first-time drug and alcohol arrests …

A Public Health Ethics Approach To Substance Use Disorder, Adele Flaherty
A Public Health Ethics Approach To Substance Use Disorder, Adele Flaherty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of the dissertation is to undertake an analysis of substance use disorders that focuses on a public health ethics perspective. The ethical argument focuses upon justifying the use of harm reduction and is primarily concerned with the current opioid crisis. While substance abuse/misuse over the course of history has been identified as a public health concern, this dissertation presents substance use disorders over the course of the lifespan, examining various contexts in which it can affect daily living and health outcomes. It achieves this by analyzing substance use disorders through the lens of the socioecological model of public …
The Influence Of Comorbid Gad On Er Utilization In Urban Youth With Asthma, David A. Karpe
The Influence Of Comorbid Gad On Er Utilization In Urban Youth With Asthma, David A. Karpe
Theses and Dissertations
Current literature indicates a strong association between asthma and the early onset of comorbid generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in minors and their primary caregivers. Studies show that asthma prevalence increases with certain demographic factors, such as ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and housing quality. Evidence also suggests that GAD influences decision-making, especially when deciding to utilize emergency room (ER) services for asthma-related concerns. This study analyzed the effect of comorbid GAD on minors with asthma and ER utilization. The data were provided by an earlier Stress & Justice Study (S&J) baseline survey, an investigation aimed at understanding the impact of parental criminal …

Serving Our Students: Evidence-Based Sex Education Policies And Practices Needed In Ohio, Lily Mckenzie Rosenberg
Serving Our Students: Evidence-Based Sex Education Policies And Practices Needed In Ohio, Lily Mckenzie Rosenberg
Honors Projects
Ohio has very minimal state-wide sex education laws, requiring only venereal disease education that has many similarities with abstinence-only education. Abstinence-only education has been shown to be ineffective in delaying first sex and lowering teen STDs, pregnancy, and birth rates. When students receive ineffective (or no) sex education it can impact them in many ways, leaving them unprepared for sexual lives as adults. To analyze the state of sex education in Ohio, this paper will look at sex education throughout Ohio both in law and in practice. I will then explore the impact of these minimal sex education laws on …

Antisocial behavior is a broad term that encompasses many facets of destructive behavior, most of which bring harm to another person or involve the violation of rights of others. Main antisocial behavior victims are young individuals, women and children. Numerous factors interact together for the development of aggression and antisocial behavior; these factors are social, environmental, physiological, neurological, and genetic. Consequently, this paper addresses the principal etiologic factors that participate in the development of antisocial behaviors for children, adolescents, and adult individuals._x000D_ _x000D_

Screening For Human Trafficking: Best Practice Guidelines And Recommendations For Health Care Providers, Bernadette Portillo
Student Scholarly Projects
Human trafficking (HT) is a federal and international crime and is regarded as one of the most pressing human rights issues. Adult and minor victims are trafficked by force (rape, beatings, confinement), fraud, and coercion resulting in profound physical and psychological injuries (Chisolm-Straker et al., 2019, p. 72; Department of Homeland Security, 2020; Vera Institute of Justice, 2014, p. 6). Most clinicians fail to recognize HT victims (Egyud et al., 2017; Leslie, 2018; Mason, 2018; McDow & Dols, 2020; Mostajabian et al., 2019; Patient Safety Monitor Journal, 2017; Stevens & Dinkle, 2020). This policy brief’s purpose is to provide health …
