Cheating As A Function Of The Labeling Of Natural Arousal, Richard A. Dienstbier, Pamela Osbourne Hunter Jan 1971

Cheating As A Function Of The Labeling Of Natural Arousal, Richard A. Dienstbier, Pamela Osbourne Hunter

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

One hundred and five college freshmen were given one of two different side-effects lists associated with a placebo pill. In a “second” experiment, subjects experienced failure on a vocabulary test, supposedly predictive of college success, and received an opportunity to cheat on the test by changing answers. Although it was anticipated that all subjects who considered cheating would experience some arousal, it was predicted that those subjects told to expect drug-induced side effects related to sympathetic arousal would not label their experienced arousal as fear or guilt, and would cheat more than the subjects who anticipated benign side effects. Of …

The Effect Of Stimulus Element Redundancy On Speed Of Discrimination As A Function Of State And Process Limitation, John H. Flowers, W. R. Garner Jan 1971

The Effect Of Stimulus Element Redundancy On Speed Of Discrimination As A Function Of State And Process Limitation, John H. Flowers, W. R. Garner

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The effect of spatially repeated stimulus elements on the speed of discrimination, measured in a sorting task, was determined under conditions of low stimulus visibility (state limitation) and high stimulus similarity (process limitation). A significant increase in speed of sorting stimuli was found when the stimuli were state limited but not when process limited, even though base speeds were the same in both cases. It is concluded that element redundancy will improve discrimination performance only when the need for the improvement is a state limitation.

The Generalization Of Cognate Sounds During Speech Therapy, Marilyn Ginther Jan 1971

The Generalization Of Cognate Sounds During Speech Therapy, Marilyn Ginther

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Two primary areas are investigated in this study; 1) a single subject replication of Shelton and Elbert (1967 a&b), in which generalization from a voiceless sound /s/ to its voiced cognate /z/ is tested; 2) a reversal of the Shelton and Elbert (1967 a&b) procedure with a single subject to determine if training on a voiced phoneme /z/ will generalize to its voiceless cognate /s/. A third area of interest will be to see if any change will occur on the phoneticallydissimilar sound /r/ in either subject.

Sensory Stimulation To Influence Body Awareness In The Adult Hemiplegic Patient, Sue Carol Bradley Jan 1971

Sensory Stimulation To Influence Body Awareness In The Adult Hemiplegic Patient, Sue Carol Bradley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An experimental study was conducted in four convalescent facilities using fourteen CVA patients with body scheme disturbances. The study was done to test the hypothesis that the experimental technique of light touch sensory stimulation as supplied by fast brushing to the skin dermatomes C 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the affected arms would increase the scores of the subjects in the experimental group.

Patients were assigned via a random process to the experimental or control groups if, upon taking the MacDonald Test of Body Scheme, they obtained a score of 39 or below. Subjects in the experimental group received …

Depression And Uncooperativeness In Public Health Patients, P. Sherrill Baugher, Nancy Lynn Swan Jan 1971

Depression And Uncooperativeness In Public Health Patients, P. Sherrill Baugher, Nancy Lynn Swan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether uncooperative behavior and a quantitative measurement of depression exist in the same patient in a public health nurse's caseload. Seven full-time public health nurses were randomly selected from the San Bernardino Public Health Department staff. They reviewed their caseloads and selected all the patients who met the general criteria.

Patients were then classified as cooperative or uncooperative based on the following specific criteria: (1) gives unreliable information, (2) uses the nurse as a "buffer" between helping agencies, (3) demands immediate gratification of requests in a stressful situation, (4) makes only token …

Non-Metric Scaling Of Loudness, Alan M. Richards Jan 1971

Non-Metric Scaling Of Loudness, Alan M. Richards

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Determination of loudness scales for 1000 Hz stimuli by conventional ratio scaling methods have yielded loudness functions which grow as approximately the 0.54 power of sound pressure. Thus, two-fold loudness differences are equivalent to approximately 10 dB across the auditory continuum. The unidimensional representation of loudness ss a power function of sound intensity implies that if A is twice as loud as B, which, in turn, is twice as loud C, the A will be four times as loud as C. In order to test this implication across the auditory continuum loudness ratio estimates were obtained from four 7x7 matrices …

Perception Of Patterned Vibratory Stimulation: An Evaluation Of The Tactile Vision Substitution System, Lawrence Allyn Scadden Jan 1971

Perception Of Patterned Vibratory Stimulation: An Evaluation Of The Tactile Vision Substitution System, Lawrence Allyn Scadden

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Sensory substitution--The replacing of an impaired sensory channel by a properly functioning one--is possibly best manifested today in attempts to provide visual aids for the blind. The tactile vision substitution system (T.V.S.S.) is an example of one such visual aid. The system presents patterned tactile stimulation to the skin of the observer provided by the output of a closed-circuit television system. Research conducted with congenitally blind Ss in evaluation of the T.V.S.S. has provided useful information concerning the potentialities and limitations of the prototype systems, similarities and differences between tactile and visual perception, and the development of "visual" perception in …

An Exploratory Study To Determine The Emotional Needs Of Terminally Ill Patients, June Hudnall Turnage Jan 1971

An Exploratory Study To Determine The Emotional Needs Of Terminally Ill Patients, June Hudnall Turnage

Theses and Dissertations

The problem to be investigated is: What are the emotional needs of patients, who are approaching death, as revealed by the patients themselves? The review of literature pointed out that almost all the data published about the dying patient were the thoughts of those around him rather than his own thoughts. Since the patient is our concern, it would seem logical to ask him what his needs are.

Nurses recognize as one of their responsibilities of assisting a patient toward a peaceful death when curative goals are beyond grasp. If the patient dies and his needs are not met, or …

A Study Of Families With Stress Related To The Care Of Children With Myelomeningocele, Janet L. Ferguson, Russel Tweed Jan 1971

A Study Of Families With Stress Related To The Care Of Children With Myelomeningocele, Janet L. Ferguson, Russel Tweed

Dissertations and Theses

This was an exploratory-descriptive study of fifty children afflicted with myelomeningocele, ages one through six, who were known to the Myelomeningocele Clinic of the Crippled Children’s Division. The study identified the degree of multiple physical, emotional, and environmental stress factors that families must be prepared to cope with. The study identified eleven factors felt to play an important role in family dynamics and how they related to the families response to their child with myelomeningocele. The factors were tested and found to be valid by the use of a pre-test on ten case records. Medical records were then obtained from …

Shock Intensity And Task Difficulty As Determiners Of Avoidance And Escape Learning In Rats, Arthur Louis Jan 1971

Shock Intensity And Task Difficulty As Determiners Of Avoidance And Escape Learning In Rats, Arthur Louis

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Thirty-six naive female hooded rats were divided randomly into three groups and tested in an instrumental escape and avoidance learning situation involving three degrees of task difficulty. Each group was also randomly subdivided into four subgroups, each of which underwent a different shock intensity level. The purpose of this study was to test the Yorkes-Dodson law which states that (a) there is an optimal level of punishment intensity for any given task (or an inverted-U curve relating shock intensity and performance) and (b) this optimal intensity decreases as task difficulty increases. The results supported (a) but not (b).

A Study Of Personality Problems And Vocal Nodules In Children, William Lee Glassell Jan 1971

A Study Of Personality Problems And Vocal Nodules In Children, William Lee Glassell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The investigator found several children with vocal nodules in the schools he served. A review of the literature revealed that vocal abuse is the commonly considered etiology of vocal nodules. Vocal abuse did not fit several of the children who tended to be quiet and withdrawn. A further review of the literature was instituted in an attempt to find some feature of commonality between quiet children and noisy children which could explain why quiet children develop vocal nodules. Several authors discussed functional voice disorders as the result of personality problems. Few, however, related their conclusions directly to vocal nodules. The …
