A Descriptive Study Of Saline Abortion Patients, Judith L. Brown Jun 1973

A Descriptive Study Of Saline Abortion Patients, Judith L. Brown

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe the psychological responses of saline abortion patients and the nurses who provided for their care. The study utilized a sample composed of five unmarried women between the ages of fifteen and twenty-one years who were seeking their first abortion, and of seventeen nurses who provided for their nursing care. The data were gathered during the hospitalization of the abortion patients. The raw data were obtained through the use of a nursing process recording and an information gathering interview with each patient and with each nurse. The tools used to analyze the …

The Effect Of A Repressive-Inspirational Discussion Group On The Self-Esteem Of Selected Elderly Individuals, Rebecca Hollesca Gucilatar

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was conducted to determine if the use of a repressive-inspirational discussion group has significance in changing the level of self-esteem of institutionalized essentially normal elderly individuals.

A review of literature indicates the need for a group method that can help in developing and maintaining self-esteem in the elderly. Different studies reveal the need for self-esteem in the aged. The development of self-esteem is necessary so that elderly individuals can cope with situations in daily living and maintain physical and mental health.

An experimental method was utilized in conducting this study. A sample of twenty elderly individuals was selected …

Selected Physiological Responses To A Back Rub, Norma (Ewing) Anderson Jun 1973

Selected Physiological Responses To A Back Rub, Norma (Ewing) Anderson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The back rub, which has been an established part of evening patient care for many years, is given to promote relaxation and sleep as well as to promote skin care. Yet its place in modern nursing seems questionable. Today's nurse is less willing to practice using empirically established procedures.

There have been few investigations showing the effect of massage to the back and no studies have shown that a brief back rub, as given by nurses, promotes relaxation. In cardiovascular nursing there is some controversy as to whether or not the back rub causes stimulation to the cardiovascular system that …

Group Experience With Parents Of Preschool Children With Seizure Disorders, George R. Jacobsen, Grant R. Kane, Joan Sacia

Dissertations and Theses

A project using parent seminars in aiding parents of children with seizure disorders was designed at the request of Dr. James R. Schimschock, pediatric neurologist and director of the Clinic for Neurologically Impaired Children, Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center. The clinic provides a diagnostic and educational therapy for neurologically impaired children. In addition to providing multidiscipline diagnostic evaluation, clinic services include operating classrooms for preschool and school-age children. The classrooms function for children with any type of neurologic impairment who are either excluded from school due to their delayed academic performance, their physical or developmental delay, emotional or behavior …

Effects Of Speaker-Sex-Difference On Listeners' Perception Of Vocal Roughness In Normal Vowel Productions, Patsy J. Phillips May 1973

Effects Of Speaker-Sex-Difference On Listeners' Perception Of Vocal Roughness In Normal Vowel Productions, Patsy J. Phillips

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of speaker-sex-difference on listeners' perception of vocal roughness in the vowel [ӕ] produced by normal male and female speakers. In a previous investigation by Wendahl (1963) it was found that when listening to two synthesized vowels, of equal aperiodicity, judges tended to rate the lower pitched vowel as being more vocally rough. If this is true for listeners' perception of human vowel productions as well then it might be advantageous for voice clinicians, when making vocal roughness assessments, to regard male and female speakers as two separate populations in view …

Family Variables Which Are Associated With Achievement Of Community Tenure By Persons Released From Psychiatric Hospitalization, Thomas Mack Chambers May 1973

Family Variables Which Are Associated With Achievement Of Community Tenure By Persons Released From Psychiatric Hospitalization, Thomas Mack Chambers

Dissertations and Theses

The pattern of frequent discharges and readmissions which characterizes most psychiatric hospitalization in this country today was described, and it was argued that the costs of this "revolving door" outweigh such benefits as might be derived from it. An alternative stepwise progression model of aftercare was proposed. This model identified community tenure as the most appropriate goal for initial aftercare efforts.

Attempts to identify correlates of the establishment of community tenure by mental hospital releasees were reviewed. It was found that the ex-patient's ability to remain in the community is not highly correlated with the extent to which he manifests …

The Effect Of Group Art Therapy On The Self-Esteem And Locus Of Control Of Delinquent Adolescent Boys, Brenda L. Bryant, Gail Y. Zirkle May 1973

The Effect Of Group Art Therapy On The Self-Esteem And Locus Of Control Of Delinquent Adolescent Boys, Brenda L. Bryant, Gail Y. Zirkle

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of twelve, fifty-five-minute sessions of group art therapy on the self-esteem and locus of control (LOC) of delinquent adolescent boys.

A review of the literature revealed that the development of self-esteem and an internal LOC orientation plays an important part in the total psychological development of the adolescent. Several descriptive studies have associated delinquent behavior with feelings of low self-esteem and external LOC beliefs.

Previous research suggests that group art therapy can increase the low self-esteem and internal LOC of delinquent adolescents. Although a few descriptive studies have been conducted …

A Comparison Of Conventional And Video Teaching Methods Among Beginning Swimmers At Utah State University, Herald J. Jardine

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to determine the value, if any, of utilizing the instant playback feature of television videotape replay in teaching the front crawl and elementary backstroke to beginning swimmers at Utah State University.

A review of literature revealed controversy as to the usefulness of the VTR media in teaching selected motor skills.

Subjects consisted of 30 male freshmen and sophomore college students placed into two groups: experimental and control, on the basis of their individual scores on pre-instruction skill testing. The subjects participated in 12 instructional periods of 40-50 minutes. The control group received instruction by …

An Investigation Of Vocational Rehabilitation Among Northwest Laryngectomees, Susan L. Leonti Apr 1973

An Investigation Of Vocational Rehabilitation Among Northwest Laryngectomees, Susan L. Leonti

Dissertations and Theses

Rehabilitation for patients recovering from surgical removal of the larynx should include vocational considerations with accompanying economic modifications. The literature pertaining to rehabilitative management of laryngectomees revealed numerous investigations concerned with physical restoration, remedial speech training and psycho-social adjustment, while few studies have been conducted concentrating upon vocational consequences of a laryngectomy.

The primary purpose of this investigation was to examine the pre- and post-operative vocational status of laryngectomized patients residing in the Northwestern section of the United States.

Leadership Techniques In Groups With Chronic Schizophrenics, Judith L. Jensen, Leona W. Mcgrew Apr 1973

Leadership Techniques In Groups With Chronic Schizophrenics, Judith L. Jensen, Leona W. Mcgrew

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study was designed to assess the level of anxiety experienced by chronic schizophrenic patients when two different methods of leadership were used in group therapy. A search of literature revealed suggestions for modification of leadership approach due to the tenuous anxiety tolerance of chronic schizophrenics but no studies were found directly related to the amount of anxiety resulting from different leadership approaches.

A structured group in which the leader maintained a directive role was compared with a nonstructured group in which the leader maintained a nondirective role in the group process. The randomized sample included five male and five …

The Doctor-Patient Relationship Revisited. An Analysis Of The Placebo Effect., Herbert M. Adler, Md, Van B. Hammett. Md

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

An overview of prescientific medicine, evolution, and individual human development is presented in an attempt to discover the generic factors operating in all interpersonal therapies. We hypothesize that the placebo effect rests on the universal human need for a group and, by symbolic extension, a system.

Management Of Severe Asthma, William B. Hunt Jr. Jan 1973

Management Of Severe Asthma, William B. Hunt Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In this summary of therapy for severe asthma there is no mention of etiologic factors. The author presumes that if infection is the primary factor in the progression to severe asthma that this will be recognized and appropriately treated. A chest x-ray must be an initial laboratory study for the recognition of pneumonia or complicating pneumothorax. However, unlike respiratory failure due to emphysema, here the specific therapy of the altered pulmonary physiology is of paramount importance.

Psychiatric Problems In Urology, James L. Mathis Jan 1973

Psychiatric Problems In Urology, James L. Mathis

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, the urologist cannot escape from a major responsibility for his patients' emotional components. The very area of his work is highly charged with emotional potential, primarily of a sexual nature. A careful sexual history is essential to the full understanding of the symptoms of many urological complaints and is equally necessary for the prevention of emotional complications to genital surgery.

The Urologist And The Law, Jack B. Russell Jan 1973

The Urologist And The Law, Jack B. Russell

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Some of the matters I have referred to may seem unusual or unlikely and thus may not be long remembered. Let me reiterate, however, the importance of two items in particular. If nothing else remains long in your minds, do not forget that complete and adequate records are essential, both in the hospital and in the office. Nothing else will take their place when they are needed. Finally, keep in mind always the significance of informed consent. It is a rapidly changing principle and one which touches literally every field of medicine. It may be difficult to accept in all …

Advancing Technology Of Clinical Laboratory Practice, George Z. Williams Jan 1973

Advancing Technology Of Clinical Laboratory Practice, George Z. Williams

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In spite of the temporary antitechnology attitude of a portion of our society, the future will be an era of automated technology. Buckminster Fuller has reviewed the progress of industrial technology and points out that continuing scientific advances are inevitable and that technical applications will provide more equitable distribution of wealth, more time, more opportunity for education and intellectual pursuits.

The Optimum Treatment For Undescended Testis, John K. Lattimer Jan 1973

The Optimum Treatment For Undescended Testis, John K. Lattimer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, there are many reasons why orchiopexy should be done, and certainly, the cancer worry is a very distinct one. Yet, I think the psychological reason, the "locker room appearance" situation, is the most frequent, and therefore, an important factor. I do think that we should exercise our favored position of being able to offer hormone treatment first. If that does not work, then go on with surgery as required. The timing, in my opinion, should be to start at the fourth birthday and to have the program completed by the fifth birthday. Although physiological considerations do enter into …

Ua35/11 Student Honors Bulletin, Vol. I, No. 1, Wku Honors Program

WKU Administration Documents

Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.
