Evaluation Of A Special Teaching Program With Ambulatory Cardiac Patients, Mary L. Mcgregor Minns
Evaluation Of A Special Teaching Program With Ambulatory Cardiac Patients, Mary L. Mcgregor Minns
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was designed to test the hypotheses that ambulatory cardiac patients given a special teaching program would have increased understanding about their medication, make fewer medication errors, and know more about undesirable effects and how to handle them than patients not included in the special teaching program. Forty-one ambulatory cardiac patients were, after a random start, alternately assigned to an experimental or to a control group. All the patients were taking one or more of three different medications before hospitalization, during their hospital stay, and after their discharge. Three medications, digoxin (lanoxin), lasix, and nitroglycerin, were studied. The program …

The Maximum Duration Of Phonation Of /A/ In Normal And Hoarse Voiced Children, Jo Coombs
The Maximum Duration Of Phonation Of /A/ In Normal And Hoarse Voiced Children, Jo Coombs
Dissertations and Theses
Hoarseness seems to be the primary type of voice disorder occurring in school-aged children. Voice experts have suggested measurement of maximum phonation times as a clinical tool for assessing vocal function (Fairbanks, 1940; Westlake and Rutherford, 1961; Irwin, 1965; Boone, 1971). Most of the studies on duration of phonation have used adults as subjects; few investigations have involved children. An apparent need, therefore, existed to investigate duration of phonation in young children.
Episodic Disorders Of Vision, John W. Harbison
Episodic Disorders Of Vision, John W. Harbison
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Of all our senses, vision is most commonly associated with patient distress, if not overt alarm, when abruptly compromised. Despite patient concern, a rare, or rarely recognizable, clinical entity is perhaps of less significance to the physician than to the patient. When the broad spectrum of episodic disturbance of vision is closely examined, it becomes apparent that these visual symptoms are indeed of common occurrence in the population at large. Surprisingly, despite their ultimate effect on the eye, a majority of the clinical entities that produce episodic disturbance of vision are neurologic. Episodic is defined as being "...made up of …
Management Of The Demented Patient, Simon Horenstein
Management Of The Demented Patient, Simon Horenstein
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
There are four essential points to the rational management of the demented patient which will be dealt with here. They are 1) the definition of the term dementia, facilitating the identification of a specific group of patients, 2) the sequence of diagnostic steps required to identify manageable and treatable features in demented patients, 3) the effective separation of dementia from depression, which is probably the most significant diagnostic point for primary care physicians, and 4) the description of a few clinical features encountered in demented patients which the physician can often modify by family education and training, by the manipulation …
Basketball Basics, Don J. Odle
Basketball Basics, Don J. Odle
Ayres Special Collection
It has been an interesting experience to me to observe how people learn. Many times we have seen high school and college athletes who play just like their older brothers...they have learned through imitation. Some of our college ball players have certain habits in footwork and as we question them further they respond that their high school coach taught it that way. We have tried to record in this book many experiences with basketball players hoping that the readers of this book might learn something to help them improve some technique of the game or some technique of life.
Current Management Of Parkinsonism, John R. Taylor
Current Management Of Parkinsonism, John R. Taylor
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In the management of Parkinson’s disease, one must be reasonably certain of the diagnosis. In spite of the foregoing sophisticated biochemistry, there is really no laboratory test for the disease, so it becomes an entity that must be recognized on purely clinical grounds. While the differential diagnosis can be quite extensive and includes such rare entities as manganese poisoning, as well as such usually apparent causes as phenothiazine intoxication or carbon monoxide sequelae, several disorders and etiologies account for most of our diagnostic problems. Although we think of Parkinsonism as a triad of rest tremor, rigidity, and akinesia, the onset …

Ua35/11 Student Honors Bulletin, Vol. Iv, Wku Honors Program
WKU Administration Documents
The articles, all papers done for classes in the university honors program, are divided into three groups. The first group deals with science, especially the area of health care, one of the more practical applications of science in the modern age. The second group consists of three papers done for honor courses in which the major purpose was to expose the student to new areas of consciousness and have them respond orally and verbally to what they read, creative writing. The last group deals with the humanities, literature and religion, two of the more popular fields of the humanities today. …

Verbal Interference With Visual Classification: Optimal Processing And Experimental Design, John H. Flowers, Beccy Blair
Verbal Interference With Visual Classification: Optimal Processing And Experimental Design, John H. Flowers, Beccy Blair
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The speed of classification of six alternative ink colors into two categories of three colors each was measured in tasks for which the colors were displayed as either XXXX patterns or incongruent words (Stroop stimuli). Substantial interference from the words occurred when the classification required grouping nonadjacent hues (red, yellow, and blue vs. orange, green, and purple) regardless of whether subjects received exclusive practice with this classification. Interference also occurred when the classification required grouping adjacent hues (red, orange, and yellow vs. green, blue, and purple), but only if this classification was intermixed within blocks of trials with the nonadjacent …
