Survey Of Pediatricians : What Are The Criteria Used For Referral To Speech And Language Pathologists?, Janet Bradley
Survey Of Pediatricians : What Are The Criteria Used For Referral To Speech And Language Pathologists?, Janet Bradley
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of the present research was to summarize from the pediatric literature the norms for speech and language development and to determine if the pediatrician is utilizing these norms as criteria for making referrals to speech and language pathologists. Research tends to show a discrepancy between the incidence of speech and language disorders and the rate of referrals made by physicians.
The methodology involved developing a three-part questionnaire to determine what screening instruments are being used in the pediatric office in regard to speech, language, and hearing, and what informal criteria are utilized for making referrals for a speech …
A Multiple Baseline Analysis Of The Use Of A Social Skills Training Package With Shy Children, Patricia A. Haist
A Multiple Baseline Analysis Of The Use Of A Social Skills Training Package With Shy Children, Patricia A. Haist
Masters Theses
The effects of social skills training were examined in a multiple baseline across behaviors design. Three shy children were taught four component conversational skills: expressing feelings, expressing opinions, agreeing with another's opinion, and praising others. The training package consisted of instructions, modeling, rehearsal, feedback, and reinforcement. Results indicated that treatment was highly effective for each child. The subjects' improvement remained evident at two- and four-week follow-up sessions. Generalization to novel role play situations was variable within and across subjects. Extra-laboratory measures of generalization did not yield significant pre-, posttraining results.

The Effects Of Self-Management Training On Fluid Compliance In Hemodialysis Patients, Glen Roland Peterson
The Effects Of Self-Management Training On Fluid Compliance In Hemodialysis Patients, Glen Roland Peterson
Dissertations
Seventeen adult, chronic hemodialysis out-patients were assessed on measures of: Compliance, beliefs about their health, and depression. The Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale was used to assess Internal Locus of Control (LOC), Chance LOC, or Powerful Other LOC. An assessment instrument was developed by the author using the Health Belief Model, and was administered to all subjects. This was designed to give a numerical value to patients' beliefs about the severity of their illness, beliefs about their susceptibility to the consequences of noncompliance, beliefs about the benefits of compliance, beliefs about the barriers that might stand in the way …

An Analysis Of Validity Constructs In The Dichotic Listening And Hemispheric Competition Procedures, Wade Addam Kapik
Masters Theses
This investigation was designed to determine the validity of two categories of neuropsychological measures of cerebral dominance. Forty right-handed subjects were administered two dichotic listening tests and two hemispheric competition tests in a random order. The principal data showed that none of the four tests had sufficient levels of criterion-related and concurrent validity to be considered clinically useful in measuring laterality. In addition, a Baysean analysis of one of the dichotic listening tests indicated that it possessed a predictive validity of .79. Finally, the assertion that the scoring methods of each test are dynamically different was disputed, and Kinsbourne's interhemispheric …
A Comparison Of Self-Esteem And Health Locus Of Control In Adolescents With Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Janice Mace
A Comparison Of Self-Esteem And Health Locus Of Control In Adolescents With Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Janice Mace
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was a descriptive survey establishing a baseline level of self-esteem and health locus of control in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) adolescents. The purpose of the research was to study and describe health behaviors of IDDM adolescents in regards to self-concept and health locus of control. These behaviors are believed to have life-long ramifications on the IDDM adolescent's health status.
The sample consisted of 91 IDDM adolescents, 34 male and 57 female, in a nonrandom convenience cluster attending a 10-day summer camp.
Null hypothesis one was: Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus would make no difference at the .05 level …

Survey Of Skills For Blissymbol Use : A Pilot Study, Leisa J. Moore
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to design an evaluative questionnaire to be used by two speech-language pathologists to survey cerebral palsied children's skills in areas pertinent to the learning of Blissymbolics, and to outline a Blissymbol protocol for recording Blissymbols of which children had knowledge. Skills of cerebral palsied children were surveyed and the Blissymbol knowledge of each was recorded.
The subjects of this pilot study were four cerebral palsied children, ages five years seven months to eight years five months. The children were currently involved in Blissymbol training, or had received Blissymbol training within the past year. Two …
Factorial Structure Of The Hamilton Rating Scale For Depression, Kevin Page O'Brien
Factorial Structure Of The Hamilton Rating Scale For Depression, Kevin Page O'Brien
Dissertations and Theses
The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRS), a 17-item observer-rated scale, was first developed in 1960 to assess the severity of depressive symptomatology in patients diagnosed as suffering from depression. The HRS has since demonstrated high inter-rater reliability (with coefficients ranging from .87 to .94), and has proven useful in measuring changes of severity following treatment.
Since its development, the HRS has been the focus of several factor analytic investigations, four of which attempted to assess the instrument for factorial invariance. Factorial invariance refers to the generalizability or applicability of dimensions developed from one sample to another. While some consensus …
