Assessing Adult Tobacco Smoking Cessation In Low-And-Middle Income Countries: Analysis Of The Global Adult Tobacco Survey Data, 2009 – 2012, Daniel Owusu May 2016

Assessing Adult Tobacco Smoking Cessation In Low-And-Middle Income Countries: Analysis Of The Global Adult Tobacco Survey Data, 2009 – 2012, Daniel Owusu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Smoking cessation can reduce health risk and prevent millions of tobacco-related deaths. However, cessation rates are low in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs), with only a small proportion of smokers intending to quit. Given the paucity of literature to support tobacco cessation programs in LMICs, this study aimed to: 1) identify factors associated with intention to quit smoking, 2) assess the relationship between health care provider quit advice/tobacco screening and utilization of cessation assistance, and 3) examine the relationship between home smoking rule and smoking intensity across three stages of smoking cessation (precontemplation, contemplation and preparation) in LMICs. Data were obtained …

Factors Influencing Participation In Screening Mammography Among Rural Women, Kelly Colliver Apr 2016

Factors Influencing Participation In Screening Mammography Among Rural Women, Kelly Colliver

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Rural residents at all income levels are significantly less likely than urban residents to participate in cancer screenings. Furthermore, rural women face common significant barriers to mammography, including: knowledge deficit, lack of primary care provider, no health insurance, fear, decreased access, transportation issues and financial constraints. The purpose of this project is to investigate factors influencing participation in screening mammography among rural women in Adams and Highland counties. Both of these Southern Ohio counties have lower than average rates of screening mammography. For this project, a non-experimental, cross-sectional design was utilized. Data was collected using a survey, based on the …

The Nurse Executive Role In Implementing Evidence Based Practice (Ebp) At The Point Of Care, Kimberly Ann Malcolm Mrs. Apr 2016

The Nurse Executive Role In Implementing Evidence Based Practice (Ebp) At The Point Of Care, Kimberly Ann Malcolm Mrs.

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Scientific knowledge is available to guide point of care practice. Due to reported barriers, however, implementation of evidence-based care is not the norm. Current literature supports that knowledge and beliefs about evidence-based practice are related to the extent nurses engage in evidence-based practice. Additionally, current literature describes the positive effects nurse administrators can have on employment of evidence-based practice. The focus of this student nurse executive’s DNP scholarly project, therefore, was to improve use of evidence-based practice by nurses at the point of care using an evidence-based practice benchmark (at the rural Midwestern hospital where employed), specifically beta-blocker administration by …

Patient Experience Journal

Relationship-centred care (RCC) is a framework for conceptualizing health care which recognizes that the nature and quality of relationships in health care influence the process and outcomes of health care. Our goal was to undertake a scoping review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature on RCC in health. Using Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review methodology we identified literature about RCC in teaching, learning and clinical practice. Electronic databases were searched, and targeted searches were also conducted for grey literature to capture unpublished material. Subsequently, data abstraction tools were used with eligible studies for analysis. Sixty-nine publications originated mainly from the …

Nurses’ Perceptions Of Importance And Achievability Of The Ten Attributes Of Health Literate Healthcare Organizations In Their Institutions: A Descriptive Study, Anna Ten Napel

Theses & Dissertations

Health literacy defined is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain process and understand basic health information to make appropriate health decisions (IOM, 2004). To be a health literate consumer, a person must be able to read, listen, understand, and make decisions related to their health. Hospitals seeking to be Health Literate Organizations must have a strong commitment to improving and reengineering to make it easier for patients to navigate, understand and use information and services to take care of their health (IOM, 2013). High quality, safe health care depends on clear communication between patients, families, providers, …

Historically, society has tended to isolate and segregate individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Despite improvements such forms of discrimination continue to be a serious social problem. On October 11, 2011, the Department of Justice began an investigation into several state’s systems of providing vocational services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This action came about due to several states being out of compliance around Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Title II of the ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability for all services, programs and activities provided to the public by state and …

Development Of A Toolkit To Evaluate Efficacy Of The Respecting Choices© System Of Advance Care Planning, Nicole M. Harpold

Doctoral Projects

In 1991 the United States Congress enacted the Patient Self-Determination Act which was an attempt by the government to improve completion rates of advance directives. Despite enactment of this law, completion rates of advance directives have remained relatively unchanged with only 18-36% of adult Americans having completed a document (United States Department of Health and Human Services, 2008). Nearly 90% of healthcare spending in the United States is on the management of chronic conditions (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). As the baby boomer generation, which already has a high number of chronic conditions, ages our struggling healthcare system …

Asthma is a life-long chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows a person’s airway. Asthma results in recurring periods of chest tightness, wheezing with inspiration and/or expiration, shortness of breath, nighttime or early morning coughing, and trouble sleeping as a result of coughing and wheezing. An asthma exacerbation occurs when asthma symptoms worsen enough to require medical intervention or self-administration of oral corticosteroids. Exacerbations can be graded in severity as mild, moderate, severe, and life threatening. An asthma action plan (AAP) is a written treatment plan developed collaboratively between the health care professional and the patient for self-management and maintenance …

The Effect Of A Multifaceted Reminder Intervention On Nursing Documentation Completeness, Meredith A. White Apr 2016

The Effect Of A Multifaceted Reminder Intervention On Nursing Documentation Completeness, Meredith A. White

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Nationwide, nurses must withstand growing patient assignments and increased workloads. The consistency between nursing documentation and technical nursing interventions performed indicates that registered nurses provide much more care than they record. This incongruence has the potential to impact patient safety, but also has significant financial implications, since reimbursement is linked to documented services. The purpose of this EBP project was to implement a multifaceted reminder intervention (including a 10-minute PowerPoint and visual reminder) in an IMCU setting to assist the nursing staff (n = 38) in completing the HAPU documentation components. John Kotter’s Eight-Stage Process and the Iowa Model of …

Age And Employee Green Behaviors: A Meta-Analysis, Brenton M. Wiernik, Stephan Dilchert, Deniz S. Ones

Publications and Research

Recent economic and societal developments have led to an increasing emphasis on organizational environmental performance. At the same time, demographic trends are resulting in increasingly aging labor forces in many industrialized nations. Commonly held stereotypes suggest that older workers are less likely to be environmentally responsible than younger workers. To evaluate the degree to which such age differences are present, we meta-analyzed 132 independent correlations and 336 d-values based on 4676 professional workers from 22 samples in 11 countries. Contrary to popular stereotypes, age showed small positive relationships with pro-environmental behaviors, suggesting that older adults engaged in these workplace …

Implementing An Intervention To Reduce Seclusion And Restraints In An Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital, Amanda B. Lykins

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The need to enhance nursing staff’s knowledge, perceptions and attitudes around alternatives to seclusion and restraint has been well validated in the literature. Seclusion and restraint use in the inpatient psychiatric setting are highly dangerous physical interventions, used to control the behavior of a mentally ill patient who is a danger to self or others. Seclusion and restraint events have the potential to cause emotional trauma, physical injury to patients or staff and the possibility of patient death. The purpose of the capstone project was to implement an evidence-based education program to, improve nursing staff’s (RN, LPN, MHA and SRNA) …

The 12 Steps Of Addiction Recovery Programs As An Influence On Leadership Development: A Personal Narrative, Mitchell Friedman Jan 2016

The 12 Steps Of Addiction Recovery Programs As An Influence On Leadership Development: A Personal Narrative, Mitchell Friedman

School of Education Faculty Research

My participation in a 12-step addiction program based on the principles and traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has been critical for my leadership development. As I worked to refrain from addictive behaviors and practiced 12-step principles, I experienced a shift from individualistic, self-centered leadership towards a servant leader orientation. I thus consider the 12-step recovery process, which commenced in 2001, a leadership formative experience (LFE) as it had the greatest influence on my subsequent development. My experience of thinking about and rethinking my life in reference to leadership and followership lends itself to a personal inquiry. It draws on work …

One way to address this problem is by using practice guidelines and education, which enhances nurses’ efficacy.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to develop and implement a glycemic management guideline to enhance clinical nursing staff knowledge and confidence.

Method: Fifty-five clinical nursing staff attended an in-service and were asked to fill out a survey before and after the in-service …

On The Dead End Of Current Research On Burnout's Prevalence, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent Jan 2016

On The Dead End Of Current Research On Burnout's Prevalence, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent

Publications and Research

Dimou et al. (2016) concluded that >50% of surgeons experience burnout. For three reasons, we think that such conclusions are unwarranted. First, there are no consensual or binding diagnostic criteria for burnout. Second, recent research (e.g., Bianchi, Schonfeld, & Laurent, 2015) suggests that burnout is actually a depressive syndrome. Finally, we note that researchers’ recommendations about stress-reducing organizational changes often remain incantatory because they insufficiently consider the economic issues and macrosocial power relationships that can hamper the recommendations’ implementation. Current practices in burnout research have led to an accumulation of results, the clinical meaning of which is obscure.

Development And Content Validation Of An Emergency Department Ehr Safety Educational Program, Ursula Renee Jernigan Jan 2016

Development And Content Validation Of An Emergency Department Ehr Safety Educational Program, Ursula Renee Jernigan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Emergency Department (ED) providers and staff experience challenges with using electronic health record (EHR) software to document and communicate about patient care. These difficulties are often caused by inadequate training in the use of the organization's EHR system. Challenges with EHR use have been linked to increased ED patient wait times, which impacts patient safety by delaying care and increasing the potential for medication errors. Providing education that addresses EHR software; EHR usability; and collaboration among staff, providers, and EHR system managers has been shown to reduce ED wait times and decrease the risk of medication errors. The purpose of …
