Looking Past The Portal: A Hidden Origin Of Ascites, Paige Ruh, Do, Claudia Leonard, Md
Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.
Introduction: The most common cause of ascites is portal hypertension secondary to cirrhosis and accounts for nearly 75% of cases. In contrast, pancreatic ascites is a rare presentation of ascites and occurs in less than 1% of patients. Because of its low prevalence, pancreatic ascites is often excluded from the initial differential diagnosis and rarely assessed in ascitic fluid analysis. This is a case in which pancreatic ascites was considered and ultimately confirmed based on the overall clinical picture, challenging the initial assumption of portal hypertension and cirrhosis. Case Presentation: A 47-year-old man with ongoing alcohol use disorder presented to …

Integrative Approaches To Gut Microbiota: Biomarkers, Dysbiosis, And Therapeutic Potential, Zeyad M. Alharbi
Integrative Approaches To Gut Microbiota: Biomarkers, Dysbiosis, And Therapeutic Potential, Zeyad M. Alharbi
Saudi Medical Journal
The human gut contains bacteria, viruses, and archaea that influence health depending on age, diet, and location. An individual harbours about 150 bacterial species. An imbalance of these microorganisms, known as dysbiosis, can negatively impact health. Commensal bacteria maintain microbial homeostasis by building short chain fatty acids. The 2-way communication channel that connects the gut and the brain is referred to as the gut-brain axis. Dysbiosis of the gut leads to some autoimmune diseases. A decline of beneficial bacteria causes the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Gut dysbiosis increases intestinal permeability, allowing toxins and cytokines to enter the bloodstream and damage …

Methionine Restriction Enhances Platinum-Based Chemotherapy-Induced Immunogenic Cell Death In Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cells, Mallory Thompson, Laura Sipe Ph.D.
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
When cancer cells are treated with chemotherapy, they can release Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMPs) as they die that can alert and engage the immune system, a process known as an immunogenic cell death (ICD). The dying cancer cell can release certain molecules, including ATP or calreticulin, that immune cells first recognize as abnormal before initiating an anti-tumor response. However, not all chemotherapies cause the release of these beneficial signals as they kill the cell. This study aims to determine whether a specific deprivation technique, called methionine restriction, enhances the ICD process and DAMP expression when used in conjunction with chemotherapy …
