Honors Theses

In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are prevalent and pose a major concern as the current healthcare systems are oriented primarily towards communicable diseases. The largest contributor to CVDs, hypertension, is a significant issue in Kenya, a model LMIC. Based on previous studies in this lab, high rates of hypertension are present in the region of Kasigau, Kenya. Kasigau is a small region within Taita-Taveta County, Kenya. Traditional risk factors are not necessarily predictive of hypertension in all regions of Kenya. This study aims to address the lack of tested risk factors for hypertension in Kenya and …

Developing A Decision-Making Tool For Breast-Feeding Mothers Whose Babies Have A Cow's Milk Protein Allergy, Rachel M. Griffith

Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) is one of the most common food allergies in infancy, affecting an estimated 2–3% of infants, including those who are breastfed. Many symptoms of CMPA overlap with gastrointestinal disorders and lactose intolerance, leading to frequent misdiagnosis and unnecessary maternal dietary restriction. Breastfeeding mothers who eliminate dairy to manage suspected CMPA often face nutritional deficiencies, emotional strain, and financial burden, while infants risk poor growth if symptoms are not properly addressed. Breastfeeding is viewed as the optimal source of nutrition for infants providing many cognitive benefits and positive maternal effects like decreased stress and risks of …

Minimizing Musculoskeletal Injury Risk In Health Care Professionals With Education On Physical Activity Recommendations, Emma H. Foran

Honors College Theses

Working in healthcare settings that require patient handling is physically demanding - over 80% of providers involved in patient handling report work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Injuries or exacerbation of a previous injury may occur if the individual cannot tolerate heavy workloads. Injuries that cause lost work time or work restrictions impact the healthcare team, may alter quality of life, and impact employee income. A practical way to minimize these effects is to prevent WMSDs. Training providers to use proper body mechanics, practice patient handling, and engage in regular exercise designed to increase muscular strength and endurance through resistance training improves …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

This practice guideline from the American Epilepsy Society provides evidence-based recommendations for pharmacological, dietary, and surgical therapies for epilepsy for infants and children from 1 month of age to < 36 months. The multidisciplinary panel updated an existing systematic review, which was funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute and conducted by ECRI (formerly the Emergency Care Research Institute) on behalf of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The updated review used the same search strategy, inclusion/exclusion criteria, and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Education methodology, and added studies from August 2021 through September 2025 that were not in the original systematic review. As with the previous review, West syndrome and infantile spasms were excluded from this guideline, as existing treatment guidance is already available for infantile epileptic spasms. While many of the recommendations are conditional due to low certainty of evidence, the panel made two strong recommendations: (1) hemispherectomy/hemispherotomy surgery is recommended for infants and children < 36 months of age with drug resistant epilepsy secondary to select underlying lesional pathologies, including but not limited to hemimegaloencephaly, Rasmussen's encephalitis, Sturge-Weber syndrome, perinatal stroke, and hemispheric cortical dysplasia; and (2) intralobar, multilobar, or focal resections or posterior disconnections for drug-resistant focal or lesional epilepsy in this same age range. A treatment algorithm was developed based on evidence and expert opinion as part of the guideline to help place pharmacological, dietary, and surgical recommendations in a clinical context. The limited number of studies and low certainty of evidence in this population underscores the need for higher-quality data and etiology-specific treatments. More research is needed to evaluate effective therapies for infants with epilepsy, as well as the impact these therapies have on long-term developmental and mortality outcomes.

Establishing Caenorhabditis Elegans As A Platform For Bioaccumulation And Selectivity Screening Of Anthelmintic Compounds, Jiarui Li

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

To address the cuticular barrier in anthelmintic discovery, this study establishes a bifurcated framework in Caenorhabditis elegans. First, HPLC-based quantification of 14 PIM inhibitors revealed that cuticular penetrance is primarily dictated by phylogenetic lineage (Clade V) rather than ecological niche. Specifically, C. elegans demonstrated a significant pharmacokinetic correlation with the hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum (Clade V) but not the whipworm Trichuris muris (Clade I), validating it as a superior surrogate model for hookworm bioaccumulation. Within this small molecule inhibitor library, SGI-12was identified as a lead candidate with superior potency against C. elegans and bioaccumulation. Second, target validation using a C. …
