Proteolytic Enzymes Of Lactic Streptococci And Their Use In Improving Body And Texture Of Direct Acid Cottage Cheese, Gulamnabi Y. Vahora May 1973

Proteolytic Enzymes Of Lactic Streptococci And Their Use In Improving Body And Texture Of Direct Acid Cottage Cheese, Gulamnabi Y. Vahora

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Proteolytic activity of Streptococcus cremoris HP, P2 and AM2; Streptococcus lactis-C2, ML8 and a commercial mixed culture was determined in skimmilk and whey by measuring the increase in Absorbency at 274.5 nm of a pH 4.6 soluble filtrate, following incubation in a 2.5% casein solution. Proteolytic activity, rate of acid production and growth rate decreased in order of C2, HP, mixed culture, AM2, ML8 and P2 at a regulated pH (6.1 - 6.2) and 32 C. Maximum proteolytic activity for all cultures was found during the stationary …

A Microtechnique For The Isolation Of Cell Wall Deficient Organisms From Very Small Samples, Lloyd T. Dutcheshen, Philip C. Hessburg

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A miniaturized procedure using a modified microtiter plate is described for the isolation of cell wall deficient organisms. It is particularly useful when the volume of a liquid specimen is very small.

Ambulatory Care For Emphysema And Chronic Bronchitis, Thomas L. Petty Jan 1973

Ambulatory Care For Emphysema And Chronic Bronchitis, Thomas L. Petty

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The immense problem of chronic airway obstruction (CAO)--emphysema and chronic bronchitis--which has now reached epidemic proportions, presents to the practitioner of medicine an increasing number of suffering persons asking for care. These patients are dyspneic, anxious, bewildered by their predicament, sometimes demanding and frightened about prospects for future comfortable life.

How To Get Patients On And Off Respirators, Terring W. Heironimus Iii Jan 1973

How To Get Patients On And Off Respirators, Terring W. Heironimus Iii

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

This title implies that one has already decided that one's patient needs to be artificially ventilated, that is, that he is in respiratory failure. How does one diagnose respiratory failure? Much of what I have to say in this regard is in terms of arbitrary limits, values, and guidelines. Since these guidelines are arbitrary, there may exist legitimate grounds for differences of opinion about some of them. However, we have found these guidelines to be quite helpful, and experience would indicate that they are reasonable.

Selenium And Sheep Health, B J. Gabbedy, A. J. Hadlow Jan 1973

Selenium And Sheep Health, B J. Gabbedy, A. J. Hadlow

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

For many years selenium was known to the livestock industries only because of its toxic properties. Some soils, particularly in the United States of America, were so high in selenium that many animals died after grazing plants on these soils.

In 1957 it was discovered that selenium supplements could prevent a number of diseases and, from that time, selenium has been regarded as an essential trace element.

White muscle disease (WMD) was first recognised in sheep in Western Australia in 1960 and has occurred each year since.

The Effects Of Crowding On The Diurnal Ascorbic Acid Levels Of Albino Rats, Mary Jo Barr Jan 1973

The Effects Of Crowding On The Diurnal Ascorbic Acid Levels Of Albino Rats, Mary Jo Barr

Masters Theses

The adrenal physiology of the albino rat was studied through the measurement of adrenal ascorbic acid levels. A cyclic phenomenon was observed which follows the diel periodicity of the animal. Ascorbic acid values were found to be characteristically higher in males than in females. A similar difference was also seen in populations divided into young animals (body weight less than 175 grams) and old animals (body weight greater than 175 grams). Crowding, induced by manipulating the area of cage space per gram of body weight, was observed to be a definite stressor and caused the adrenal ascorbic acid levels to …

A Compatibility Study Of Common Additives In Protein Hydrolysate-Dextrose Solutions For Parenteral Hyperalimentation, Norman Hideo Kobayaski Jan 1973

A Compatibility Study Of Common Additives In Protein Hydrolysate-Dextrose Solutions For Parenteral Hyperalimentation, Norman Hideo Kobayaski

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The use of the alimentary route to supply essential nutrients, either by mouth or nasogastric tube, is by far the best. This route, however, requires an intact and functioning gastrointestinal tract which may be found in certain chronic intestinal diseases, malignant tumors, and cases of gastrointestinal obstruction. In there and certain other clinical situations, parenteral feeding is necessary to provide essential nutrients normally provided in the diet.

The intravenous route of administration is generally recognized as the most effective means of systemic administration. Yet, considering the other routes used clinically, it is of relatively recent development. Parenteral therapy began in …

Compatibility And Stability Of 8% Amino Acids Solution In Combination With Electrolytes, Vitamins And Antibiotics, David Harold Schuetz Jan 1973

Compatibility And Stability Of 8% Amino Acids Solution In Combination With Electrolytes, Vitamins And Antibiotics, David Harold Schuetz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For centuries, researchers have attempted to devise the ideal parenteral nutritional product readily amenable to physiological requirements. Hyperalimentation, intravenous alimentation, parenteral alimentation, parenteral feeding, and total parenteral nutrition are synonyms which refer to a method of complete intravenous nutrition reserved for patients demonstrating negative nitrogen balance.

The nutrient solution appeared to accommodate levels of potassium phosphate, calcium gluconate, and magnesium sulfate well in excess of “usual” therapeutic concentrations. Similarly, commonly employed vitamin supplements and insulin were examined in combination with the hyperalimentation solution and failed to demonstrate signs of physical incompatibility. However, instrumental analysis, i.e., U.V. spectroscopy and thin-layer chromatography, …

Seasonal Variation In The Tubular And Interstitial Areas Of The Testes In Sternotherus Odoratus L., Robert Hans Spaet Jan 1973

Seasonal Variation In The Tubular And Interstitial Areas Of The Testes In Sternotherus Odoratus L., Robert Hans Spaet

Masters Theses

Seasonal changes within the tubular and interstitial areas of the testes in Sternotherus odoratus are investigated, histologically and histochemically. Forty specimens were collected in Illinois, Tennessee and Louisiana between May, 1969 and August, 1972.

Many of the histological and macroscopic observations made by Risley (1938) on the spermatogenic cycle of S. odoratus in Michigan are confirmed. Contrary to his findings, fluctuations in interstitial cell nuclear diameters are observed during spermatogenesis. Greatest diameters coincide with what Risley has considered " . . . period of most active breeding." Sertoli cell nuclear diameters undergo similar fluctuations being greatest during spring breeding and …

The Dietary Intake Of Preschool Children Attending The Public Health Clinics In San Bernardino, California, Glendover V. Brown

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Preschool children attending Well Baby Clinics directed by the Public Health Department of San Bernardino, California, were the sub jects in this study. The purpose of the study was (1) to compare the eating pattern and habits of the preschool children attending the San Bernardino Public Health Clinics, (2) to assess any differences in the dietary intake of the three major ethnic groups, namely, Mexican- Americans, Whites, and Blacks, and (3) to determine the adequacy of the dietary intake of the preschool children attending the San Bernardino Clinics. One hundred and seventy-seven subjects in this study included 51 Mexican-Americans, 74 …
