Production From Heifers And First Calvers, G J. Sawyer Jan 1987

Production From Heifers And First Calvers, G J. Sawyer

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Heifers and first calvers present the major problems of the beef breeding herd. Reproduction rates, calf growth and survival of first calvers are generally much poorer than those of adult breeders.

Early successful reproductive performance is important in beef herds because of the high overhead cost of keeping breeding beef heifers or cows, Where possible, beef producers should aim to join heifers at 14 to 15 months of age. To achieve this goal, producers should set production targets for those animals. These targets will differ from farm to farm depending on when calves are turned off and the seasonal feed …

Genetic And Environmental Factors In Obesity: Case Studies, Bonnie Kathleen Hargis

Theses

This research project consisted of seven case studies of obese women who sought treatment for their weight problems at a hospital weight loss clinic and fitness center. The purpose of these studies was to consider the extent to which heredity and /or environmental factors contributed to these subjects being overweight. The case studies suggested that six of the subjects' overweight. problems were mainly caused by environmental factors. It was determined that one subject was overweight largely due to genetic predisposition, but that environmental factors also played a role. The two primary environmental factors appeared to be eating large portions of …

The Effect Of A Balanced Amino Acid Infusion On Hepatic Regeneration In Rats, Robert Arthur Anstadt

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The efficacy of a balanced amino acid infusion on recovery from temporary hepatic insufficiency and its effect on plasma ammonia levels in partially hepatectomized rats were studied.

Polyethylene implant buttons were developed to secure animals to the infusion apparatus. Rats under went jugular vein cannulation, and 70% partial hepatectomy. Test solutions were continuously infused (30 ml/d). Plasma samples were taken through the jugular vein cannula and analyzed for bilirubin concentration, ammonia concentration, LDH activity, and GPT activity.

LDH and bilirubin results were inconclusive. Results from GPT activity assays suggest that both Freamine III and the balanced formula provided injured hepatocytes …

Nosocomial Respiratory Tract Infections Associated With The Use Of Ventilatory Support Systems: Epidemiological And Bacteriological Study Of The Effect Of Changing Breathing Circuits At 24 Or 48 Hours, Virginia Archer Lamb Jan 1987

Nosocomial Respiratory Tract Infections Associated With The Use Of Ventilatory Support Systems: Epidemiological And Bacteriological Study Of The Effect Of Changing Breathing Circuits At 24 Or 48 Hours, Virginia Archer Lamb

Theses and Dissertations

Nosocomial (hospital-acquired) pneumonia (HAP) continues to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the hospital. HAP is the third most common nosocomial infection after urinary tract and surgical wound infections. In addition, HAP is the nosocomial infection with the highest mortality rate. These infections are often difficult to treat, because most are caused by Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) that may be highly resistant to antimicrobial agents. HAPs frequently occur in intensive care patients with underlying lung and/or systemic diseases. Many patients are intubated and are on assisted ventilation. Several sources of infection associated with ventilators or respirators have been …

Biochemical And Histological Evaluation Of Normal Human Epidermis Vs Cultured Human Epidermis, Ngo Thi Bich Lien

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Cultured human keratinocytes were grown in vitro for transplantation purposes in case of severe burns. Single keratinocytes were harvested from human epidermis and grown in culture flasks such that multilayered sheets of keratinocyte cells were harvestable in approximately three weeks. In order to evaluate cultured epidermis for equivalency with normal human epidermis, biochemical and histological studies were performed. Thin sections of cultured epidermis were shown to be composed of cells that had undergone developmental differentiation, but not terminal differentiation. Biochemical analyses of keratin and prekeratin proteins isolated from cultured epidermis indicated that cultured keratinocytes have electrophoretic patterns similar to keratins/prekeratins …
