Effects Of Weight Reduction, Exercise, And Diet Modification On Lipids And Apolipoproteins A-L And B In Severely Obese Persons, J. David Fachnie, Craig C. Foreback

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

We assessed the lipid and apolipoprotein effects of hypocaloric dieting, increased physical activity, and dietary modification in severely overweight adults (body mass index [BMI] 43.05 kg/m-). The 34 women and four men enrolled in the ambulatory weight control program donated blood before, during, and after hypocaloric dieting (420 kcal/day). Mean values before dieting included cholesterol of 223 mg/dL, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol of 43 mg/dL, and cholesterol/HDL cholesterol of 5.90. This placed our subjects at high risk for coronary artery disease. Other values included triglycerides of 138 mg/dL, apolipoprotein A-l of 152 mg/dL. and apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-l of 0.64. Significant …

Obstructing Giant Pseudopolyposis Of The Colon In Ulcerative Colitis, Roberta E. Sonnino, Farouck N. Obeid Dec 1987

Obstructing Giant Pseudopolyposis Of The Colon In Ulcerative Colitis, Roberta E. Sonnino, Farouck N. Obeid

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Pseudopolyposis of the colon is a well-recognized local complication of ulcerative colitis. Giant pseudopolyposis is uncommon, and its presentation as a complete obstruction of the colon is a rare occurrence. We report such a case, where retrograde flow of barium on double-contrast barium enema was completely obstructed at midtransverse colon. After resection by total abdominal colectomy, pathology examination ofthe specimen confirmed massive pseudopolyposis without malignancy. A brief review of the pathology and current literature is presented.

Binding Of Steroid Hormones In Vitro By Water-Insoluble Dietary Fiber, Crystal G. Whitten Dec 1987

Binding Of Steroid Hormones In Vitro By Water-Insoluble Dietary Fiber, Crystal G. Whitten

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Previous work conducted in our laboratory has shown that steroid hormones bind to natural (e.g., brans, oat hulls) and purified (e.g., cellulose, lignin) fiber components. To explore this relationship further, we assessed the in vitro binding of estrone, estradiol-17β, and testosterone to a water-insoluble fiber fraction obtained from composite food samples of 18 Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) nonvegetarian (NV), 20 SDA lacto-ovovegetarian (LOV), and 15 SDA vegan (V) men. Three-day dietary food records and 72-hr food composites were obtained contemporaneously from each subject. The LOV and V subjects consumed significantly more crude, dietary and water-insoluble fiber than the NV subjects. Water-insoluble …

Time Delayed Protein Complementation, Diana L. Lakusta

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The time delayed complementation of plant proteins was tested in weanling Sprague-Dawley male rats by measuring growth rates as well as plasma and tissue free amino acids. Diets of pinto beans with rice, corn or wheat were pair-fed in combination or alternating 4 times a day at 6 and 11 am, and 4 and 9 pm for 4 weeks. Plasma, liver and muscle samples were obtained 2 hours postprandial, a time determined most suitable for sacrifice, and analyzed for free amino acids via ion-exchange chromatography. There were no significant differences in growth of rats fed combination or alternating diets.during week …

The Effects Of Stress On Menstrusal Symptomatology In College-Age Women, Denese E. Cunningham Dec 1987

The Effects Of Stress On Menstrusal Symptomatology In College-Age Women, Denese E. Cunningham

MSN Research Projects

This was a correlational study designed to investigate the relationship of stress and menstrual symptomatology in college-age women. The null hypothesis stated there would be no significant correlation between stress levels and menstrual symptomatology in women attending college. Data were collected from 90 subjects between the ages of 18 and 40 years who were attending college and who currently experience menses. All of the subjects were given the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, Form C (MDQ) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Form Y-1 (STAX). Using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, the scores were compared at the .05 level of significance. The …

Synthesis And Characterization Of N-Alkyl-Adenosine-5'-Diphosphates, Han-Ping Huang Oct 1987

Synthesis And Characterization Of N-Alkyl-Adenosine-5'-Diphosphates, Han-Ping Huang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

n-Alkylphosphates and adenosine derivatives have been observed to be competitive inhibitors of coenzyme molecules in many NAD+ requiring enzymes. In earlier studies, adenosine derivatives such as AMP, ADP and ADP-ribose were found to be coenzyme competitive inhibitors of the Lactate Dehydrogenase catalyzed reaction. However, n-alkylphosphates, to the contrary, + were found to be noncompetitive inhibitors of NAD+.

Furthermore, it was observed previously in Dr. Yuan's laboratory that the effect of n-octylphosphate on the LDH catalyzed reaction was changed from noncompetitive to competitive in the presence of low concentration of AMP. Rossmann et al. reported that the binding …

Insulin And Glucagon Responses To Dietary Protein In Diabetic And Nondiabetic Men, Monica L. Blomstedt Sep 1987

Insulin And Glucagon Responses To Dietary Protein In Diabetic And Nondiabetic Men, Monica L. Blomstedt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Five men with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and fourteen nondiabetic men, were given test meals with soy protein, casein or additional carbohydrate in place of protein. Blood levels of insulin, glucagon, glucose and lipids were measured at fasting, one-half hour and two hours postprandial. To all meals, the nondiabetic subjects responded with a quick rise of the insulin level which decreased at two hours. In contrast, the diabetics showed a significantly lower insulin response at one-half hour (p < 0.05), but a tendency to higher levels at two hours. The same pattern was observed in the insulin to glucagon ratio. No significant difference between the meals was found in regard to insulin or glucagon responses, suggests that a sustained, although delayed postprandial insulin response, may be a precursor to the higher cholesterol and increased risk for cardiovascular disease among diabetics.

Effect Of Disulfiram On The Urinary Excretion Of The Serotonin Metabolites 5-Hydroxytryptophol And 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid In Problem Drinkers, Mark D. Harding Sep 1987

Effect Of Disulfiram On The Urinary Excretion Of The Serotonin Metabolites 5-Hydroxytryptophol And 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid In Problem Drinkers, Mark D. Harding

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Problem drinkers (N=7) were given 500mg disulfiram daily for one week. Urine was collected before and after disulfiram intake. 5-Hydroxytryptophol (5-HTOL) was determined by a modification of the method of Davis et al. and adapted to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with an electrochemical detector setting of 0.75V. 5-Hydroxy-indoleacetic acid (5- HIAA) was determined using the HPLC method of Shihabi et al. (1980). Urinary excretion of 5-HTOL in ug/gm creatinine before and after disulfiram was 25.4± 3.3 and 110.5± 27.1 respectively, p < 0.02. 5-HIAA in mg/gm creatinine before and after disulfiram was 4.9±0.9 and 3.6±0.8 respectively, p > 0.16. The data shows that disulfiram administration alters serotonin metabolism resulting in increased 5-HTOL which is known to increase …

Effects Of Dietary Calcium Levels On Human Blood Pressures, Janice Mearkle Aug 1987

Effects Of Dietary Calcium Levels On Human Blood Pressures, Janice Mearkle

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The prevalence of hypertension in the U.S. and similar industrialized countries continues to rise. Millions of people are affected in America alone. Usual treatment includes a low sodium diet, weight loss if needed, and drug therapy. Some health providers also encourage stress management as an adjunct to therapy. These treatments have been shown to be effective but patient compliance continues to be poor. Past research has explored the relationships between dietary calcium and hypertension and has found that there is an interaction between blood calcium levels and high blood pressure. The research reported here was a test of the relationship …

The Effects Of Reminiscence Therapy On Social Interactions Of Institutionalized Elders, Lori A. Cooley Aug 1987

The Effects Of Reminiscence Therapy On Social Interactions Of Institutionalized Elders, Lori A. Cooley

MSN Research Projects

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effects of reminiscence therapy on social interaction in a group of institutionalized elders. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant differences over time in social interactions as institutionalized elders participated in a reminiscence group. The sample was comprised of three elderly females in a nursing home in North Mississippi. The subjects were observed for behaviors indicating interaction during eight sessions. These sessions were conducted for 3 weeks and each one lasted approximately one hour. A trained observer recorded observations using the Social Interaction Tool. The data were submitted …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Incisor Intrusion And Root Resorption, W. Michael Mcfadden Jun 1987

A Study Of The Relationship Between Incisor Intrusion And Root Resorption, W. Michael Mcfadden

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study examined the relationship between maxillary and mandibular incisor intrusion and root resorption. Age, sex, facial type, treatment time, extraction versus non-extraction therapy, width of the symphysis, and the angle of the incisors to skeletal reference planes were also studied for their relationship to intrusion and root resorption. Thirty-eight cases treated with utility arches for intrusion were selected. Root shortening was found to average 1.84 mm for maxillary incisors and 0.61 mm for mandibular incisors. Intrusion of incisors in a population that exhibited growth was found to be one of "holding against growth". No relationship was found to exist …
