Molecular Epidemiologic Techniques In Analysis Of Epidemic And Endemic Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1 Strains, Nancy A. Strockbine, Julie Parsonnet, Katherine Greene, Julia A. Kiehlbauch, I. Kaye Wachsmuth
United States Public Health Resources
During 1988 the number of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 infections reported in the United States increased fivefold. To determine if recent isolates from Mexico were related to those that caused epidemics of dysentery worldwide, Southern hybridization analysis was done with Shiga toxin and ribosomal RNA gene probes. Western hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere strains differed by the size of a single EcoRI fragment carrying the Shiga toxin genes. Three ribosomal DNA (rDNA) patterns were observed, which correlated with the strain;s continental origin for 81 of 83 isolates tested. Together the Shiga toxin and rDNA probe results indicated that recent Mexican …
Getting The Best Out Of Weaner Sheep In The Eastern Wheatbelt, Sally Revell
Getting The Best Out Of Weaner Sheep In The Eastern Wheatbelt, Sally Revell
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A study of the growth of Merino weaner flocks over summer and autumn in Western Australia 's eastern wheatbelt during 1989 and 1990 has identified efficient weaner management strategies, and provided a basis for future research and extension needs of this area. The average liveweight of several weaner flocks was unexpectedly low at the start of summer. Weaner flocks may need to be supplemented before the start of summer to prevent undue weight loss at this time.

Veterinary Consultancy Boosts Piggery Profits, Ashley Mercy
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A pilot Pig Herd Health Management Scheme co-ordinated by the Department of Agriculture has stimulated much increased involvement of veterinarians in the Western Australian pig industry. Co-ordinated by Ashley Mercy, principal veterinary officer (epidemiology) horn 1985 to 1989, the scheme demonstrated the value of having regular visits from veterinary consultants and in implementing programs to prevent disease and production problems occurring in herds.
Geriatic Nurse Practitioner's Health Promotive Behaviors: A Test Of Theory Of Reasoned Action, Sandra L. Venegoni
Geriatic Nurse Practitioner's Health Promotive Behaviors: A Test Of Theory Of Reasoned Action, Sandra L. Venegoni
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to develop an instrument to test the theory of reasoned action (Fishbein & Ajzen, 1975) in a new behavioral domain the health promotive behaviors of geriatric nurse practitioners (GNPs). The two behavioral categories included in the study were health assessment and health teaching, each with its individual index of actions.
A questionnaire was developed to examine the beliefs of a sample of 200 certified geriatric nurse practitioners and to test the relationships of the theoretical model. Names of the subjects were randomly selected from the American Nurses' Association 1989 list of certified GNPs. Ninety-four …
Slim Just Left Town: Decision-Making On An Intensive Care Unit, Dena S. Davis
Slim Just Left Town: Decision-Making On An Intensive Care Unit, Dena S. Davis
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
This essay will analyze the process of making health care decisions when patients' chances are slim. I look at recent legal tools that purport to enhance patients' control over their own care, and conclude that they are rarely efficacious. Because all medical decisions are based on prognosis, and because prognosis is ineluctably subjective, the doctor retains almost total control of the decisionmaking process.
The Relationship Of Osteoporosis Health Beliefs And Knowledge To Calcium Intake, Karen L. Boyer
The Relationship Of Osteoporosis Health Beliefs And Knowledge To Calcium Intake, Karen L. Boyer
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between health beliefs (susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers, health motivation and self-efficacy) and knowledge, to calcium intake. The study used a descriptive correlational design and a convenience sample of 201 women was selected. Data collection took place in a metropolitan area of west Michigan and a structured interview method was used. The subjects ranged in age from 35 to 95. Ninety-six and one half percent of the sample was white. The hypothesis--"knowledge and the health beliefs account for a significant amount of variance in calcium intake" was partially supported. Self-efficacy and …
Relationships Of Osteoporosis Health Beliefs To Practiced Exercise Behaviors Of Women, Sandra J. Esch
Relationships Of Osteoporosis Health Beliefs To Practiced Exercise Behaviors Of Women, Sandra J. Esch
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of health beliefs contained in the Health Belief Model to practiced exercise behavior of women. A descriptive correlation design was used with a convenience sample of 201 women. The revised version of the Osteoporosis Health Belief Exercise Scale developed by Kim, Horan, Gendler and Patel (1991b) was used to measure health beliefs related to osteoporosis. The ARIC/Baecke questionnaire of Habitual Physical Activity was used to measure life style physical activity. Health motivation and exercise benefits were found to be positively correlated to exercise behavior. However, susceptibility and exercise barriers were …
Nursing Care Of The Elderly In The Acute Care Setting: An Investigation Of Powerlessness, Dorothy De Boer Zylstra
Nursing Care Of The Elderly In The Acute Care Setting: An Investigation Of Powerlessness, Dorothy De Boer Zylstra
Masters Theses
This study's purpose was to identify whether persons 65 years of age or older hospitalized with congestive heart failure perceive personal powerlessness. Cognitive competence of the subjects was determined by the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire. A Powerlessness Interview Schedule (PIVS) was used to identify subjects' perceptions of personal powerlessness.; Perceived powerlessness was not conclusively apparent in the fifty-one subjects of this study. No subjects received a score of 38 or below. Ten of fifty-one subjects received scores ranging from 46 to 56 which may place them at risk for perceived personal powerlessness. Forty-nine subjects had areas of limited feelings …
Determinants Of Health Promotion In The Elderly, Victoria Ann Merren
Determinants Of Health Promotion In The Elderly, Victoria Ann Merren
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to look at determinants of health promotion in the elderly. Pender's (1982) Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile, Wallston & Wallston's (1979) Health Locus of Control Scale, and demographic variables were included on a questionnaire given to a convenience sample of 47 adults, ages ranged from 60-89. All subjects were Caucasian and 65% were female.; The theoretical framework that was used in this descriptive study was Pender's (1987) Health Promotion Model. Standardized z-scores for the Health Locus of Control subscales classified subjects as either "internal" or "external" locus of control. Thirty-five percent were internal.; Forward Regression …
Relationships Of Osteoporosis Health Beliefs To Calcium Intake Of Women, Mary C. Peterson
Relationships Of Osteoporosis Health Beliefs To Calcium Intake Of Women, Mary C. Peterson
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of health beliefs to calcium intake of women. Two hypotheses were tested: (1) There is a positive relationship between the strength of health beliefs related to susceptibility, seriousness, benefits and motivation and the level of calcium intake. (2) There is a negative relationship between the strength of health beliefs related to barriers and calcium intake.; The study was conducted using a descriptive correlational design. The sample included 201 women between the ages of 35 and 95. The study used the Osteoporosis Health Belief Calcium Scale to measure health beliefs about …
Phomopsis-Resistant Lupin Stubbles As Feed For Weaner Sheep, Colin Mcdonald, Keith Croker, Jeremy Allen
Phomopsis-Resistant Lupin Stubbles As Feed For Weaner Sheep, Colin Mcdonald, Keith Croker, Jeremy Allen
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The breeding of sweet, narrow-leafed lupins with increased resistance to Phomopsis leptostromiformis, the fungus that causes lupinosis in sheep, is a breakthrough for the summer nutrition of weaner sheep. The new resistant varieties, Gungurru for the medium (325 to 450 mm) rainfall areas and Yorrel for low rainfall areas (less than 325 mm), were released by the Department of Agriculture in 1988.
This article discusses progress in a four-year project which is examining liveweight and wool production of weaners grazing Gungurru stubbles.
The Effect Of Psychosocial Factors On The Immune Response Of Hiv Infected Individuals As Measured By The Extent Of Relationship With Cd-4 T Cell Count And Physical Symptoms, Richard R. Taylor
Theses
The effect of psychosocial factors on the immune response of HIV infected human subjects was assessed by measuring the degree of relationship to CD-4 T cell count and physical symptoms.
Twenty six participants (22 white and 2 black males) all who had been diagnosed as HIV positive completed a battery of 11 psychological tests and a social and medical history questionnaire. Fifty four psychosocial factors were selected as having the potential to have a significant effect on immune response.
Correlational analyses yielded no strong relationships between the psychosocial factors and CD-4 T cell count or physical symptoms. Moderate associations were …

The Bangladesh Women's Health Coalition, Bonnie J. Kay, Adrienne Germain, Maggie Bangser
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Bangladesh Women's Health Coalition (BWHC) represents an important initiative in the movement toward more responsive modes of family planning delivery. In the context of a society where there are strict limits on the social role and physical mobility of most girls and women, BWHC has set itself the ambitious goal of enabling women—no matter what their income or education—to learn how to manage their own reproductive health and the health of their children in a way that enhances their sense of strength and competence. One of the real strengths of BWHC has been its willingness to learn from experience …

Child Care: Meeting The Needs Of Working Mothers And Their Children, Caroline Arnold, Jorge Mejia, Aster Haregot, Ann Leonard, Cassie Landers
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of SEEDS, developed in cooperation with the Consultative Group on Early Childhood Care and Development, with support from UNICEF, seeks to bring together the critical elements of women's work and child care, reviewing the issues from three different perspectives: child care as a means of enabling women to work, as a source of employment for women, and as a way of meeting the developmental needs of young children. The report examines three different UNICEF-supported approaches to child care on three different continents—Asia (Nepal), Africa (Ethiopia), and South America (Ecuador)—that have been developed with the needs of working women …

Pharmaceutical Risk And The Quality Of Life, Beat Hiltbrunner, Andreas Breitsprecher
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Quality-of-life research is briefly described and said to be in its infancy. However, the authors observe that such studies may, e.g., make it possible to better match patients and therapies. They also predict that, as scientific difficulties are overcome, the pharmaceutical industry will become more active in planning, implementing and evaluating such research.

Dietary And Parasitological Analysis Of Coprolites Recovered From Mummy 5, Ventana Cave, Arizona, Karl Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly
Karl Reinhard Publications
Four coprolites were excavated with Burial 5 at Ventana Cave. a partially mummified five-year-old child. Two coprolites were granular and dark in color and two were fibrous and light in color. The coprolites are remains of the child's intestinal contents and were submitted for dietary and parasitological analysis. No parasites were found. The fibrous coprolites proved to be remains of highly masticated mesquite pods (Prosopis). The granular coprolites consist of seeds of saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). Pollen analysis reveals two dietary pollen types, both derived from cactus. No evidence of cultivated plants except for a trace amount of …
