Trypanosoma (Nannomonas) congolense comprises morphologically identical but genetically heterogeneous parasites infective to livestock and other mammalian hosts; three different genotypes of this parasite have been described previously. Restriction enzyme fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) in both kinetoplast DNA minicircle and nuclear DNA sequences, and randomly amplified polymorphic deoxyribonucleic acid (RAPD) patterns have been used here to demonstrate the existence of another type of T. (N.) congolense that is genotypically distinct from those that have so far been characterized at the molecular level. A highly repetitive, tandemly arranged DNA sequence and oligonucleotide primers, for use in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification are …

Section of Neurology
A cDNA has been isolated from human hippocampus that appears to encode a novel Na(+)-dependent, Cl(-)-independent, neutral amino acid transporter. The putative protein, designated SATT, is 529 amino acids long and exhibits significant amino acid sequence identity (39-44%) with mammalian L-glutamate transporters. Expression of SATT cDNA in HeLa cells induced stereospecific uptake of L-serine, L-alanine, and L-threonine that was not inhibited by excess (3 mM) 2-(methylamino)-isobutyric acid, a specific substrate for the System A amino acid transporter. SATT expression in HeLa cells did not induce the transport of radiolabeled L-cysteine, L-glutamate, or related dicarboxylates. Northern blot hybridization revealed high levels …

Differences In Physician Assistant Compliance With National Cholesterol Education Program Guidelines Based On Patient Age And Sex, Marie T. Dittmer
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study was designed to determine if there is a difference in physician and physician assistant compliance with the National Cholesterol Education Program guidelines based on patient age and sex. A subproblem was to investigate differences between actual practice and physician and physician assistant perceptions about their treatment practices. The study was planned in two sections including a (a) chart audit, and (b) physician survey. The chart audit investigated screening, recognition, and treatment practices of physicians and physician assistants at the Northeast Iowa Family Practice Center. The survey sought to find information on physician and physician assistant perceptions of treatment …
A Comparison Of Three Midwifery Interventions On The Continuity And Knowledge Of Breast Feeding, Athalie Johnston
A Comparison Of Three Midwifery Interventions On The Continuity And Knowledge Of Breast Feeding, Athalie Johnston
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Although it is widely recognised that breast milk is biologically perfect to provide nutrition for the newborn infant many new mothers do not continue to breast feed throughout the postpartum period. A possible influencing factor is the decreased length of hospital stay, whereby new mothers are discharged home away from the supportive-educative role of the midwife before they are ready to learn the art of breast feeding. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of three midwifery interventions on the continuity and knowledge of first time breast feeding mothers at 6 weeks postpartum. A convenience sample of …

Bone Density And Muscle Development Problems In Female Lightweight Rowers Trying To Make-Weight, Carmel A. Shipway
Theses : Honours
The purpose of this study was to determine whether high intensity exercise, combined with restriction of diet, is counter-productive to the normal health and development of the competitor. The study investigated the effects of high intensity exercise on body composition (fat, muscle and bone); bone density; and physical performance (aerobic capacity, rowing performance, quadricep strength, power and fatiguability) in twelve lightweight female rowers (age range 17- 25yrs), training for the State and National lightweight championships. Six of the rowers completed the testing, which consisted of test1 (pre-training) and test2 (post-training) after a 12 weeks training regime.
Skinfold measurements were lower …

Rediscovering The Asylum, Sharon M. Keigher
Rediscovering The Asylum, Sharon M. Keigher
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Spending a night at a typical big city shelter for the homeless has reminded the author of the massive and regimented environment in institutions that she had mistakenly believed no longer existed after the much acclaimed "deinstitutionalization" of America. St. Mary's is run by a religious order attempting to provide charitable care in a nondemanding environment. Many demands are made, however. The lack of privacy and respect for individuality inherent in institutional life tends to erode the "inmate's" very conception of self. It controls their activities, time, and choices, and thus creates barriers to exit. Providing "shelter" for the homeless …

Effects Of Dietary Calcium And Fasting On Osteoclast Recession And Recruitment In Calcium Deficient Rats, Kenneth R. Wright
Effects Of Dietary Calcium And Fasting On Osteoclast Recession And Recruitment In Calcium Deficient Rats, Kenneth R. Wright
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The osteoclast, a multinucleated giant cell, has as its role the resorption of bone matrix with consequent release of calcium. The osteoclast is thought to derive from a pluripotent stem cell which also gives rise to monocytes and macrophages. The development, activation, and inhibition of osteoclasts are influenced by a number of systemic and local factors. The release of these factors is influenced by changes in the dietary status of the animal. Calcium deficiency is known to stimulate the recruitment and activity of large numbers of osteoclasts. These osteoclasts can subsequently be inhibited by increasing dietary calcium intake. Disappearance of …

Evaluation Of The Ihs Urban Health Business Office Concept, American Indian Health Care Association, M.A. Foster
Native Health Database Full Text
Purpose The "Evaluation of the IHS Urban Health Business Office Concept," commonly called the Supplementary Security Income (SSI) Project, was a ten month grant demonstration project that was contracted to the American Indian Health Care Association (AIHCA) by the Indian Health Service (IHS) with cooperation of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The SSA was mandated to increase minority and target population enrollment for SSA benefits. The SSA provided funding to the IHS to oversee a project designed to locate and assist urban American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) in applying for SSI.
Sex Selection: Regulating Technology Enabling The Predetermination Of A Child's Gender, Owen D. Jones
Sex Selection: Regulating Technology Enabling The Predetermination Of A Child's Gender, Owen D. Jones
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The debate over the prohibition of sex (or gender) selection (also known as "preselection" or "predetermination"), has focused almost exclusively on the context of aborting a "wrong-sex" fetus after a fetal gender-identification procedure. Despite the fact that sex selection abortions represent only a small subset of sex selection procedures, attitudes toward the former are driving general policy approaches to the latter. However, the issues are analytically distinct, and only during the former infancy of the pre-conceptive (and non-abortive post-conceptive) technology for sex selection were members on both sides of the debate afforded the economy of using one logic to support …
Changes In Intracellular Chloride During Osmotic Stress And L-Alanine Uptake In Mouse Hepatocytes, Kening Wang
Changes In Intracellular Chloride During Osmotic Stress And L-Alanine Uptake In Mouse Hepatocytes, Kening Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A stable intracellular ionic environment is necessary for hepatocytes to function normally. Thus, during hypotonic shock or L-alanine uptake, hepatocytes swell and then exhibit a regulatory volume decrease (RVD), which comprises an increase in K$\sp+$ conductance (G$\sb{\rm K}$), an increased K$\sp+$ efflux, and a hyperpolarization of transmembrane potential (V$\sb{\rm m}$). Since hepatocyte intracellular Cl$\sp-$ has been demonstrated to distribute passively with V$\sb{\rm m}$, this study is designed to test the hypothesis that the hypotonic shock- or L-alanine uptake-induced hyperpolarization of V$\sb{\rm m}$ might provide an electromotive force for the efflux of hepatocyte intracellular Cl$\sp-$, which in turn would contribute osmotically …
The Effects Of Post-Event Massage Therapy On Multistage Ultraendurance Cycling, Tracey Hodges Drews
The Effects Of Post-Event Massage Therapy On Multistage Ultraendurance Cycling, Tracey Hodges Drews
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Post-event massage therapy has been proposed to hasten muscle recovery and improve ensuing performance in multistage ultraendurance cycling events. Six elite male cyclists competed in two 4·d stage races of 161 kmd·1 on a computerized race simulator over challenging terrain in a controlled laboratory environment with an average completion time of 275 ± 28 min. In a crossover experimental design, subjects received either 30 min post-event massage therapy or a 30 min inactivated diathermy treatment serving as a blind placebo after each 161 km race. The subjects repeated the 4·d, 161 km·d·1 event 18d later receiving alternate post-event …

Effects Of Dextro-Methamphetamine On Subjective Fatigue, C. A. Dejohn, Scott Shappell, D. F. Neri
Publications
Declining aircrew performance during periods of sustained flight operations (SUSOPs) has underscored the need to develop effective countermeasures. This paper reports on the ability of the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant d-methamphetamine to alleviate the detrimental effects of a simulated SUSOPs on subjective fatigue. Subjective fatigue was repeatedly measured by three questionnaires. The simulated SUSOP started at 1800 and consisted of a 9-h planning session followed by 4 h of rest and a 14-h mission. After 6 h of sleep, the 9/4/14 work/rest/work pattern was repeated. At 4 1/2 h into the second mission, 13 subjects were administered 10 mg …
