Cancerous tissue is a largely unexplored microbial niche that provides a unique environment for the colonization and growth of specific bacterial communities, and with it, the opportunity to identify novel bacterial species. Here, we report distinct features of a novel Fusobacterium species, F. sphaericum sp. nov. (Fs), isolated from primary colon adenocarcinoma tissue. We acquire the complete closed genome and associated methylome of this organism and phylogenetically confirm its classification into the Fusobacterium genus, with F. perfoetens as its closest neighbor. Fs is phenotypically and genetically distinct, with morphological analysis revealing its coccoid shape, that while similar to …

Live High-Train Low Induced Changes In Hemoglobin Mass And The Erythropoietin-Erythroferrone-Hepcidin Axis In Female Endurance Athletes, Titta Kuorelahti, Johanna K. Ihalainen, Vesa Linnamo, Claire Badenhorst, Oona Kettunen, Ritva Mikkonen

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The effects of a 21-day live high-train low (LHTL) on hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) and iron demand including the erythropoietin (EPO)-erythroferrone (ERFE)-hepcidin axis and routine iron markers were investigated. Fifteen female endurance athletes completed either 21-day LHTL in normobaric hypoxia (2500 m, ~18 h·day−1) (INT, n = 8) or lived and trained in normoxia (CON, n = 7). Hbmass and resting blood were collected before and after the intervention. An additional blood sample was collected on Day 6 for INT. 21-day LHTL increased Hbmass 3.8% in INT (p < 0.001). EPO increased 35.6% from Day 0 to Day 6 in INT (p = 0.037) and then decreased 42.4% from Day 6 to Day 21 (p = 0.019). In INT, no changes were detected in ERFE or hepcidin, and from the routine iron markers only serum transferrin receptor increased from Day 0 to Day 21 (13.9%, p = 0.013). In CON, no changes were detected in Hbmass or iron markers. In INT, Hbmass and ferritin were positively associated (Day 0 to Day 6, p = 0.005). Thus, hepcidin and ERFE may not provide additional information regarding iron demand following 6- or 21-day LHTL compared to routine iron markers. The relationship between Hbmass and ferritin indicates that adequate ferritin levels are needed during hypoxia to support hematological adaptations.

Exercise has emerged as an effective therapeutic strategy in cancer management. Long-term supervised exercise programs, including resistance training and aerobic training, can improve body composition and physical fitness, modulate circulating factors (e.g., hormones, cytokines), enhance treatment tolerance, and reduce side effects, potentially influencing cancer progression and reducing mortality risk. Despite advancements in exercise oncology, opportunities remain to refine exercise prescription through the integration of advanced methodologies such as periodization and autoregulatory programming strategies. Periodization, a systematic approach to organizing training over time, has demonstrated benefits in general fitness and clinical populations but is underexplored in cancer care. Emerging evidence suggests …

Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) has three main variants; polyaminated (hLCN2) and non-polyaminated (C87A and R81E). The polyaminated form is proposed to positively influence energy control, whereas the non-polyaminated forms negatively impact energy control in mice. Glucocorticoids negatively affect glucose regulation and exercise has a positive effect. We hypothesise that glucocorticoids will suppress, while exercise will increase hLCN2, and decrease C87A and R81E, which will be associated with improved insulin sensitivity. In a randomised crossover design, nine young healthy men (aged 27.8 ± 4.9 years; BMI 24.4 ± 2.4 kg/m2) completed 30 min of high-intensity aerobic exercise (90–95% heart rate reserve) after glucocorticoid …

Circadian organization is involved in many gastrointestinal tract (GIT) functions such as the maintenance of intestinal barrier integrity. There is compelling evidence that perturbation of the circadian clock decreases intestinal epithelial cells' resiliency to alcohol-induced injury. One of the most common causes of circadian misalignment is wrong-time eating (largest meal at dinner) in modern societies. Yet, few studies have examined the importance of peripheral circadian rhythms of the GIT to alcohol consumption. Genetic Predisposition To Persistent Fatigue After A Diagnosis Of Colorectal Cancer, Elham Kazemian, Adetunji T Toriola, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related fatigue (fatigue) is a common and persistent symptom after cancer treatment, yet the role of genetic susceptibility remains unclear.

METHODS: We used data from a prospective cohort study called the ColoCare Study, conducted over 5 US sites and Germany. Fatigue was assessed at 5 time points using the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire fatigue subscale and analyzed as (1) a binary summary measure of the trajectory from diagnosis into survivorship (defined as severe: yes/no), (2) a mean score across all time points, and (3) the highest (ie, worst) score …

Context

Childhood obesity continues to increase along with the numbers of children with severe obesity and related comorbidities. This meta-analysis1 sought to determine whether or not glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) medications are safe and effective for children and adolescents.

Methods

Appropriate search and abstraction approaches were used in the meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials making it the highest level of evidence. Included studies were those with participants younger than 18 years with obesity, overweight, pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes (T2D) assessing GLP-1 RAs alone or with lifestyle modification versus placebo published between 2023 and 2025.
