The Challenges And Blessings Of Missionary Nursing In Africa, Jordan E. Woosley
The Challenges And Blessings Of Missionary Nursing In Africa, Jordan E. Woosley
Senior Honors Theses
Nursing is a popular career choice in the twenty-first century, and there are many opportunities within the profession to serve. An American nurse has the ability to utilize nursing skills in Africa and share knowledge with the locals. The American nurse may face challenges when adapting to the African culture and healthcare but also may be blessed by the work and ministering to the people. The American nurse faces specific challenges such as educational differences, lack of facilities and equipment, unique diseases, and poor sanitation. In spite of these challenges, the American missionary nurse is able to grow through this …

Understanding The Vocation Of Health Professionals, Laura Hey, Kate Nowakowski
Understanding The Vocation Of Health Professionals, Laura Hey, Kate Nowakowski
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
This project seeks to determine if and how physicians and dentists understand their work as a vocation or calling. In order to accomplish this, we interviewed dentists and physicians who were at different points in their careers and analyzed the data in comparison with theological sources on vocation. Dentists defined their vocation in broad terms, saying that it was more than their work. Physicians, on the other hand, see their vocation to mean the work that they do as a physician. Both groups found the most fulfillment in their careers when they feel a sense of joy and excitement, when …
Education And Opportuntty: Creating A Scholarship Program In Ecuador, Holly Hanson
Education And Opportuntty: Creating A Scholarship Program In Ecuador, Holly Hanson
Theses and Graduate Projects
Educating young women offers significant benefits to societies, including economic progress and improved health outcomes. Despite the benefit, many girls around the world lack access and opportunity to education. The Rochester, Minnesota 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Hands For Humanity, addresses this inequity through offering a college scholarship program for young Ecuadorian women living in Portoviejo, Manabi province, Ecuador. Hands For Humanity collaborates with Ecuadorian teachers and business leaders to select high-achieving students with a financial need. Currently there are six young women completing their college education with the help of the scholarship. Due to rising tuition costs and extended academic program …

Parasites In Paraguay: An Analysis Of The Presentation And Management Of Intestinal Parasites By Short-Term Medical Mission Volunteers In Paraguay, Robert A. Eick
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Introduction. International medical aid in the form of short-term medical missions (STTMs) receives more than $250 million in annual donations. Needs assessments prior to the STTM and outcomes analysis for improvement are often lacking. Objective. Describe the patient population attended to during a one-week STTM in Paraguay, South America, while examining “parasites” as a presenting concern, as a diagnosis by the providers, and the prescription of antiparasitic treatment. This analysis identified variance in intestinal parasite presentation and management by age, gender, and location. The administration frequency of antiparasitic medication was considered as prophylactic versus disease-treatment based.
Methods. This study was …

I'M Still Standing: Five Strategies To Survive Going Back To School, Janice Hawkins

[First paragraph] Making the decision to return to school for a PhD was difficult for me. I feared the unknown but inescapable lifestyle adjustments. I’m resistant to change. When facing life’s cold waters, I wade, rather than plunge. There’s no wading into a PhD program. In spite of my cautious nature, I took the plunge.
An Opportunity For Diagonal Development In Global Surgery: Cleft Lip And Palate Care In Resource-Limited Settings, Christopher D. Hughes
An Opportunity For Diagonal Development In Global Surgery: Cleft Lip And Palate Care In Resource-Limited Settings, Christopher D. Hughes
Articles - Patient Care
Global cleft surgery missions have provided much-needed care to millions of poor patients worldwide. Still, surgical capacity in low- and middle-income countries is generally inadequate. Through surgical missions, global cleft care has largely ascribed to a vertical model of healthcare delivery, which is disease specific, and tends to deliver services parallel to, but not necessarily within, the local healthcare system. The vertical model has been used to address infectious diseases as well as humanitarian emergencies. By contrast, a horizontal model for healthcare delivery tends to focus on long-term investments in public health infrastructure and human capital and has less often …

Dmft And Its Possible Determinants In The Honduran Population, Patrick T. Cooper
Dmft And Its Possible Determinants In The Honduran Population, Patrick T. Cooper
Honors Scholar Theses
Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the dental health status of several communities in Honduras in terms of the DMFT index (decayed missing and filled teeth). Specifically the study focused on comparisons of the Garifuna (a maroon community in Tela) with the people of San Jose, Copan, and others who traveled from other regions to come to a medical clinic. These results were also compared to other populations of developing and developed countries. Through looking at each participant’s DMFT score, many possible correlations to oral health were explored including region, age, gender, snacking, tobacco use, and oral hygiene. …

Do No Harm: Perceptions Of Short-Term Health Camps In Nepal, Dena Seabrook
Do No Harm: Perceptions Of Short-Term Health Camps In Nepal, Dena Seabrook
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Short-term health camps are a growing form of delivering health care services to needy populations. Often these camps, usually lasting around 2 weeks, are led by I/NGOs in developing nations like Nepal and are staffed with volunteers from the Global North. These camps are largely ungoverned, and there are no evaluative techniques in place to monitor the effectiveness of the work done, raising concerns about the unintended consequences of short-term health camps camps. Nepal is particularly vulnerable to this issue because of the vast number of I/NGOs currently operating within its boundaries.
This research sought to expand the conversation surrounding …
