The Inclusion Of Women’S Health In Sustainable Medical Mission Trip Models: A Pa Student’S Perspective, Jillian G. Goles Jan 2015

The Inclusion Of Women’S Health In Sustainable Medical Mission Trip Models: A Pa Student’S Perspective, Jillian G. Goles

VA Engage Journal

Like many disadvantaged countries around the world, Nicaragua is visited by numerous medical missions each year. The efficacy of these missions relies on the organization’s relationship with the communities they serve. Although the general goal of all medical missions is to ultimately help underserved populations, many missions inadvertently do harm. Two critical causes of such inadvertent harm are lack of sustainable practices and failure to form a long-term relationship with the communities. Shenandoah University’s Physician Assistant Program has worked tirelessly to form an ideal medical mission model and relationship with El Ayudante, a local non-government humanitarian organization, and the local …

Cultural Competence And The Global Role Of Dietitians: A Haitian Medical Mission And Inter-Professional, Service-Learning Nutrition Course, Joanne Christaldi, Jessica R. Bodzio

Nutrition Faculty Publications

As the poorest Western Hemisphere country, Haiti has a long history of health disparity including elevated rates of hypertension, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis. In the summer of 2012, a four-week knowledge and skills based course, including a one-week medical mission, was developed to meet the need for medical care in Haiti, and to provide an interprofessional, service-learning environment to enhance students’ cultural competence. A nonprofit volunteer organization that connects healthcare people with a community in need assisted in developing the mission trip. Background on the culture of Haiti, medical education, and development of nutrition education materials were incorporated into the course. …

Food Security Factors Affect Growth In Young Children In An Ecuadorian Indigenous Community, Whitney Jeannine Asher Jan 2015

Food Security Factors Affect Growth In Young Children In An Ecuadorian Indigenous Community, Whitney Jeannine Asher

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

Inadequate nutrition in preschool-aged children in an urban indigenous community outside of Santo Domingo, Ecuador has a negative impact on growth and development. Nutritional assessments have shown that children are underweight and that there are some effects of stunting and wasting in the population. This study was conducted to assess the extent of food security in this indigenous community in preparation for addressing two of the Millennium Development Goals for 2015: reducing the under-five child mortality rate by two-thirds and eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. An aim was to validate on-site assessment measures in this indigenous community regarding geographic circumstances, …

Introduction: Cancer is one of the major health problems that occur in people of all races and cultures. There is a dearth of literature on implementing non-pharmacological measures to improve quality of sleep among cancer patients. Objectives: This study assessed quality of sleep among cancer patients and the effectiveness of Yoganidra intervention on quality of sleep in terms of improvement using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Methods: A survey was used in Phase I (n=25) to assess the quality of sleep using PSQI. In phase II, an evaluative approach was used through one group pre-test post-test design (n=19).The participants with …

Implementation Of A Helicobacter Pylori Test And Treat Program In Rural Nepal Facilitated By A Nurse Practitioner Doctor Of Nursing Practice Comprehensive Project Report, Shelley Bloom

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

There are 30 million people in Nepal, 85% live in rural areas and have access to 15% of health care resources. This deficit in health care resources is supplemented by services provided by non-governmental organizations who organize short-term medical missions. At a rural Nepalese health post 45% of the patients complained of abdominal discomfort. As the prevalence of helicobacter pylori is 50-90% in Southeast Asia, the patients believed that they had helicobacter pylori.

In resource-poor communities, there is a gap between best practices and the care delivered. To decrease the gap in one rural Nepalese health post, a Nurse Practitioner …

Good Intentions?: A Consideration Of Short-Term, Medical Mission Trips, Kayla M. Steele Dec 2014

Good Intentions?: A Consideration Of Short-Term, Medical Mission Trips, Kayla M. Steele

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

I review the current trend of international volunteer travel with a focus on advantages and disadvantages of short-term (1-2 week) medical volunteer trips and how cross-cultural communication can influence the effectiveness of volunteers. Advantages include making health care available to populations who normally do not have access to care. Disadvantages to trips include a lack of follow-up care and community dependence on outside aid. To increase the effectiveness of these trips, it is recommended that volunteers coordinate with full-time health care workers in target communities and utilize pre-departure training.

Midwifery In India And Its Roadmap, Manju Chhugani Sep 2014

Midwifery In India And Its Roadmap, Manju Chhugani

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Healthy women are the key to the health of any nation. Midwifery in India has climbed up the ladder of progression from before independence till the present day. In the pre-independence era, maternal and newborn care was given by indigenous dais who not only helped during childbirth but also acted as consultants for any condition of the mother related to birth. They were midwives in the literal sense. Over the time, midwifery in India has broadened to the presence of a skilled birth attendant during childbirth. The maternal health status of women and maternal mortality are closely related to the …

Developing A Community Health Worker Program In Chichigalpa, Nicaragua, Monterey Starkey Aug 2014

Developing A Community Health Worker Program In Chichigalpa, Nicaragua, Monterey Starkey

Other Graduate Research

The city of Chichigalpa, Nicaragua suffers from poor health that causes high rates of morbidity and mortality. Consequently, the people in Chichigalpa could be helped with better water solutions, nutritional status, and overall health knowledge. The people are poor and often do not have access to a doctor due to location or financial reasons. Therefore, a Community Health Program was created to train local community health workers to screen for diseases and to teach the local people preventive care, mainly focusing on water, nutrition, and CKDu. Objectives included assessing the community, recruiting community health workers, developing training curriculum, and training …

Development Of A Partnership For International Rural Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences, Emily K. Flores, Linsey A. Courtney

International Journal of Health Sciences Education

Objective. To design a faculty-guided international elective Advanced Pharmacy Practice Expereince (APPE) in partnership with a medical relief organization. To expose students to pharmacy-related opportunities in non-traditional settings focused on an indigent population, while obtaining a global perspective on healthcare.

"The Claims Of Religion Upon Medical Men": Protestant Christianity And Medicine In Nineteenth-Century America, Ronald James Gordon May 2014

"The Claims Of Religion Upon Medical Men": Protestant Christianity And Medicine In Nineteenth-Century America, Ronald James Gordon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This is the first study to examine how pastors lost authority over bodily healing in the nineteenth century. I argue that clergymen adapted to the scientific and cultural developments of the post-Darwin era by encouraging a separation of bodily healing and spiritual healing that was unprecedented in Christianity. In 1840, ministers wielded much more authority than physicians, who still practiced a heroic medicine whose foundations predated Christ. Ministers insisted that doctors' value lay in their willingness to be proselytizing Christians. The doctor who wanted to reach the upper echelon of his profession had to save the souls of the wayward …
