On The Nature Of The Resting Frog Skin Potential, Priscilla M. Winn, Nancy S. Laprade, William R. Tolbert, Ernst G. Huf

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In this paper some of the highlights of research on the nature of the resting frog skin potential have been presented. Reviewing a period of about 30 years, it was the intention to show that several key problems have been recognized by a number of investigators who, through their experimental work, have tried to find unequivocal solutions to such problems as follows: a) The number and location of electrogenic layers (barriers) within the rather complex epidermis. b) The characterization of these barriers in terms of specific permeability properties. c) The electrical response of the two sides of the skin to …

The Pathogenesis Of Atherosclerosis And Coronary Heart Disease, Joseph T. Doyle Jan 1966

The Pathogenesis Of Atherosclerosis And Coronary Heart Disease, Joseph T. Doyle

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Fifty-five percent of all deaths in the United States are ascribed to cardiovascular disease. The vast majority of these deaths are due directly or indirectly to atherosclerosis and its ischemic complications (Am. Heart Assoc., 1965; U.S. President's Commission on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke, 1964). Atherosclerosis is defined in Dorland's dictionary (24th edition) as "a lesion of large and medium-sized arteries with deposits in the intima of yellowish plaques containing cholesterol, lipoid material and lipophages." Typical atherosclerotic lesions of the coronary arteries are shown in figure 1. Even a casual inspection of these lesions shows the incompleteness of this conventional …

Incidence Of Staphylococcus Aureus On Fomentation Covers, Yvonne Badgley Mcdaniel Jul 1965

Incidence Of Staphylococcus Aureus On Fomentation Covers, Yvonne Badgley Mcdaniel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was to ascertain whether fomentation covers were contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus prior to being placed on a patient receiving a hydrotherapy treatment.

From a review of literature on the subject of the Staphylococcus aureus organism and from studies of hospital-acquired staphylococcal infection it appeared that: (1) researches had used various techniques for making cultures from fabrics, (2) the Staphylococcus aureus cultures may react in varying ways to the laboratory tests making the classification somewhat difficult, (3) the problem of hospital-acquired staphylococcal cross-infection was present, (4) the role played by the environment in hospital-acquired infections was controversial, and (5) …

The Feasibility Of Employing A Neurophysiological Approach To Learning Disabilities In The Public School, Betty M. Zelman Jun 1965

The Feasibility Of Employing A Neurophysiological Approach To Learning Disabilities In The Public School, Betty M. Zelman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A number of procedures characteristic of the neurophysical approach to learning problems were employed in the Rialto Unified School District. This study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of their use in the public school setting.

The results of the investigation indicated that:

  1. The practices may be employed in public schools.
  2. School administrators gave support for the program.
  3. School personnel either are or may be trained to carry out the procedures.
  4. Chronological age appears to have little expected to be extensive.
  5. Cooperation from the home cannot be expected to be extensive.
  6. Further study should be given to public school uses …

A Comparative Study Of Two Methods Of Obtaining Midstream Urine Specimens, S. Maxine Page Jun 1965

A Comparative Study Of Two Methods Of Obtaining Midstream Urine Specimens, S. Maxine Page

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to find out if the procedure developed by the investigator for obtaining midstream urine specimens for culture from adult female outpatients would produce less contamination than the procedure most often used in the selected outpatient department. Following a review of pertinent literature, two relatively equivalent groups of twenty-two adult females with medical or surgical problems were selected. Persons with symptoms of urinary tract infection were excluded from the study. One group was subjected to the control procedure, designated as Procedure A. Procedure A was an unsupervised procedure involving the use of soap and water …

Pesticide Residues, J. William Cook, Sidney Williams Apr 1965

Pesticide Residues, J. William Cook, Sidney Williams

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

METHODOLOGY for residue analysis has advanced rapidly during the current review period, from November 1962 through October 1964. Notable progress has been made in the development and refinement of methods of analysis by which any or all of a large number of pesticide residue chemicals can be detected and measured in one general operation. This is of particular significance because great interest has developed-outside the scientific community as well as within - in the possible presence of pesticide chemicals in all parts of our environment, including man himself. Only by the use of improved methodology will it be possible to …

The Effect Of Idoxuridine (Idu) On Corneal Stromal Cells In Tissue Culture, Walter J. Geeraets, Guy Wong, Dupont Guerry Iii

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Corneal stromal cells were cultured in vitro and exposed to various concentrations of idoxuridine (IDU), ranging from 0 to 1,000 μg of IDU per ml of medium. Inhibition of cell multiplication occurred with concentrations of 0.1 μg per ml. With concentrations of 1.0 μg per ml and greater, there was no increase in cell number from the time of exposure to IDU.
