Assessment Of Hearing Sensitivity By Use Of The Acoustic Reflex In The Geriatric Population, Donna Elvira Gilham
Assessment Of Hearing Sensitivity By Use Of The Acoustic Reflex In The Geriatric Population, Donna Elvira Gilham
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of the SPAR test (Sensitivity Prediction by the Acoustic Reflex) on a sample of older adults who professed negative otologic histories. Twenty-seven subjects, ranging in age from sixty-four to eighty-three years of age (54 ears) were ultimately chosen as subjects. A young adult group, ranging in age from eighteen to thirty years of age, with normal audiometric hearing levels served as controls. Reflex threshold levels were obtained using 500 Hz., 1000 Hz., and 2000 Hz. pure tones and noise stimuli. Assessment of hearing loss was calculated on the difference between …

Opinions Of Logan City Residents Towards The Bear River District Health Department, Darrell R. Borrowman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to determine the opinions and perceptions of the residents of Logan, Utah, concerning the role and responsibilities of the Bear River District Health Department, and whether those opinions and perceptions differed among low, middle and high income families; among residents having a high school degree or less, a bachelor's degree or less, or a graduate degree or less; and among men and women. A survey instrument was administered to a stratified random sample of 150 residents.
The data collected indicated that: (1) the majority of the residents of Logan, Utah, were not aware of …
Determination Of Lead Content In Apical Tissue Following Root Canal Obturation With Sargenti's Formula, G. Merle Hickok
Determination Of Lead Content In Apical Tissue Following Root Canal Obturation With Sargenti's Formula, G. Merle Hickok
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Four Stump-tail monkeys were used to help determine if the lead in Sargenti's formula diffuses out into the apical tissue while confined entirely within the root canal. In each animal two teeth were filled with Sargenti's formula 1-2 millimeters short of the radiographic apex, and two teeth were filled with gutta percha and Proco-Sol sealer for controls, making a total sample size of sixteen. The time ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. Lead analysis using the spectrophotometric method showed a higher lead content in the teeth filled with Sargenti's formula than with the gutta percha controls.
An Examination Of "Right To Treatment" Standards: Mental Health Policy Within The Context Of The State Hospital System, Kathryn Glass
An Examination Of "Right To Treatment" Standards: Mental Health Policy Within The Context Of The State Hospital System, Kathryn Glass
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper discusses the use of court-imposed standards for public mental hospitals as a method of improving public mental health services. The standards set out in Wyatt v. Stickney are examined, and the author concludes that if implemented nationally such standards would transform the public hospitals. In addition, implementation would alter the power structure of mental health workers, effect the allocation of state and federal funds, and influence the larger system of mental health services. Socio-economic characteristics of public mental hospital patients, and an assessment of present care in this system are presented as central issues in mental health policy …

The Living Together Arrangement: Social Work And The Lost Client, Robert W. Weinbach, Anne C. Blankenship, Sarah M. Friedman, Judy C. Rutledge, Claudia A. Thompson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
A recent research study suggests that persons living together outside of marriage do not view social work services as a potential source of help for problems brought into the living together arrangement, those common to all intimate long-range dyadic relationships or those directly related to choice of lifestyle. A multi-faceted approach is suggested which would aim at reaching this potential client group in a climate which will neither stigmatize or judge the alternate lifestyle or the persons who practice it.
Evaluation Of A Special Teaching Program With Ambulatory Cardiac Patients, Mary L. Mcgregor Minns
Evaluation Of A Special Teaching Program With Ambulatory Cardiac Patients, Mary L. Mcgregor Minns
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was designed to test the hypotheses that ambulatory cardiac patients given a special teaching program would have increased understanding about their medication, make fewer medication errors, and know more about undesirable effects and how to handle them than patients not included in the special teaching program. Forty-one ambulatory cardiac patients were, after a random start, alternately assigned to an experimental or to a control group. All the patients were taking one or more of three different medications before hospitalization, during their hospital stay, and after their discharge. Three medications, digoxin (lanoxin), lasix, and nitroglycerin, were studied. The program …
Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoretic Studies Demonstrating Cytoplasmic Protein Components Unique To The Mycelial Phase And To The Yeast Phase Of Candida Albicans, Theresa Catherine Burgess
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Blastospore and mycelial cytoplasmic extracts from four strains of Candida albicans, varying in virulence, were compared by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis Cytoplasmic extracts were made by disrupting the cultures in a Braun homogenizer followed by ultracentrifugation. The supernatant fractions were then resolved on polyacrylamide gels containing SDS. Each of the preparations yielded a distinct pattern. There were mycelial specific and blastospore specific protein bands. There were more components resolved from the blastospore phase cytoplasmic extracts than from the mycelial phase cytoplasmic extracts. There were bands common to both phases. These results demonstrate protein components unique …

Acne Vulgaris, James J. Leyden
Acne Vulgaris, James J. Leyden
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Acne vulgaris displays all the characteristics of a polygenic disorder in that hereditary factors are apparent with strong family tendencies for the disorder while the phenotypic expression of the disease varies over a wide spectrum. All that is known for certain concerning the genetics of acne is that concordance is extremely high in identical twins. In the past decade, various investigations have resulted in much clearer concepts of pathogenesis and have brought us to the point of effective therapy for the majority of cases. In this report, I will summarize recent concepts in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris.

Paleoserologic Studies: Abo And Histocompatibility Antigens In Mummified American Indians, A. A. Hossaini, Marvin J. Allison
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The first genetic polymorphism to be described in man was the ABO blood group system. Ths system proved to be present as a membrane antigen of the cells of almost all organs of the body. In this it not only stimulates histocompatibility antigens but also helps to determine ABO compatibility between organ recipients and their donors. The presence of the ABH and HL-A antigens in tissues and their stability on storage allows typing mummified bodies despite the passage of thousands of years.

An Approach To Dizziness, Alan B. Grindal
An Approach To Dizziness, Alan B. Grindal
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Dizziness is a vague and ubiquitous symptom which frequently frustrates and perplexes the clinician. Dizziness in the broad sense implies any unpleasant sensation of disturbed relationship to surrounding objects. A number of synonyms such as faintness, light-headedness, giddiness, and swaying, although descriptive, are often no more specific. Problems in diagnosis, therefore, are due not only to the ambiguity of the term but also to the wide spectrum of disorders in which dizziness may be a prominent symptom. Although disorders of the vestibular system usually receive primary attention, it should be kept in mind that many neurologic, cardiovascular, psychiatric, and other …
