The Manufacture Of Dependency: Shelterization Revisited, Kostas Gounis Mar 1992

The Manufacture Of Dependency: Shelterization Revisited, Kostas Gounis

New England Journal of Public Policy

Emergency shelters have been the most comprehensive and enduring response to homelessness in the United States, with New York City leading the way since the early 1980s. Shelters have emerged as a hybrid between a degraded type of "public housing" and a new form of "institutionalization." The persistence of shelter dependency, or "shelterization," is an intractable problem that frustrates policymakers and service providers. Popular among certain circles of professional pathologists is the view that shelterization is a form of "adaptation" to the violent, anomic, and generally antisocial environment of the shelter. This explanation of shelter dependency is theoretically flawed and …

Homelessness, Alcohol, And Other Drug Abuse: Research Traditions And Policy Responses, Gerald R. Garrett Mar 1992

Homelessness, Alcohol, And Other Drug Abuse: Research Traditions And Policy Responses, Gerald R. Garrett

New England Journal of Public Policy

Although homeless alcoholics and other drug abusers more often elicit public scorn than sympathy, ironically they enjoy a celebrity status as research subjects. This article provides an overview of research literature on the homeless and their alcohol and drug problems. The evolution of public policies concerning control, rehabilitation, and treatment of homeless substance abusers is also traced with special attention to the interaction between scientific literature and policy responses over the past century. Although homeless populations today are more diverse than their counterparts in earlier decades, the analysis suggests that the policies and programs developed in response to the crisis …

Classification And Its Risks: How Psychiatric Status Contributes To Homelessness Policy, Anne M. Lovell Mar 1992

Classification And Its Risks: How Psychiatric Status Contributes To Homelessness Policy, Anne M. Lovell

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article examines the extent to which psychiatric classification in public policy research contributes to the equation of homelessness and mental illness. Surveys that measure psychiatric status of homeless persons are reviewed to understand whether they contribute to biased rates of mental illness among homeless persons. The relationship between psychiatric classification and the concept of need is examined and alternatives to current classification are proposed. Classification is discussed particularly in relation to policies of segmentation for "single" homeless adults.

Training The Urban Health Care Provider: One Department's First Steps, James Schindler

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

As our country faces a national crisis in health care, few have outlined plans to improve the shortage of primary care physicians. This is especially critical in urban areas where sociocultural impacts on health are large. The Department of Family Practice and Community Medicine at the University of Texas School of Medicine in Houston has begun development of a division of Urban Family Medicine to address the special training needs of the urban family practitioner. Subdivisions that have been formed focus on undergraduate curriculum, graduate educational strategies, service, and research and policy to further develop the training model.

Moving From Health Care Research To Action, Claudia R. Baquet, Katherine Marconi, George Alexander Mar 1992

Moving From Health Care Research To Action, Claudia R. Baquet, Katherine Marconi, George Alexander

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Although the United States spends more on health care than any country in the world, access to that care is becoming increasingly difficult. The National Cancer Institute and other federal agencies are sponsoring innovative research for delivering effective medical services, particularly to underserved populations. Models of successful collaboration between private and public sectors concerned with health care can be adapted and implemented at the national, state, and local levels. However, other measures are needed to ensure access to adequate health care for all Americans. Minimal but effective regulations are needed to ensure quality control, reduce duplication of services, and minimize …

The Emerging Role Of Htlv-I/Ii And Hiv-1 Among Intravenous Drug Users In Detroit, Anthony F. Ognjan, Chris A. Lewandowski, Bradley T. Belian, John Burczak, Norman Markowitz, Helen Lee, Louis D. Saravolatz

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

During 1987-1988, a seroprevalence study of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) and the human T-cell lymphoma/leukemia virus (HTLV-l/II) was performed among Detroit intravenous drug users unaffiliated with substance abuse programs. Seroprevalence data along with patient demographic information were compared to a similar study performed in 1985-1986. In the earlier study, 12 (12.5%) of 96 individuals tested positive for HIV-1. Of the 74 available negative samples retested in 1987-1988 for retroviruses, 7 (9.5%) tested positive for HTLV-I/II. Thus, the overall retroviral (HIV-1, HTLV-I/II) seropositive rate for 1985-1986 was 22%. In 1987-1988, 11 (15.7%) of 70 individuals tested positive for HIV-1 and …

Presentation And Evaluation Of Patients With Epidermoid Head And Neck Cancers, Michael S. Benninger

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Epidermoid cancer of the head and neck occurs most frequently in individuals with predisposing factors for neoplastic development. Primarily these include exposure to smoking and alcohol, although other predisposing factors may he present. Site-speciflc symptoms along with a history of predisposing environmental exposure can direct physicians to suspect head and neck cancer. Endoscopy and ancillary testing are performed for tumor staging and subsequent treatment planning.

The Expression And Regulation Of The Hsdk Genes Of Escherichia Coli K-12, Ainu Parkash Mar 1992

The Expression And Regulation Of The Hsdk Genes Of Escherichia Coli K-12, Ainu Parkash

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The DNA restriction and modification (R-M) genes in bacteria play a defensive role in the organism, offering protection to the host from invaders such as bacteriophages. The expression of these genes in E. coli K-12 had not previously been studied due to the complexity of the EcoK R-M enzymes. The use of lacZ gene fusion techniques allowed studies of the expression of the hsdK genes for the first time. Operon fusions of Mu(/ac) to the hsdK genes show that the two hsdK promoters, p res and p mod, are weak (50 Miller units) and that …

A Student Assistance Programs Model, David Edward Eby

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study was to develop a manual detailing the components of Student Assistance Programs in the Olympia School District. The manual would be useful to a school district or a high school intent on establishing Student Assistance Programs. The development of the manual was beneficial to the Olympia School District due to fact that Student Assistance Programs were established at the two high schools, Capital High School and Olympia High School in 1991. A vice-principal and a key staff member from Capital High School attended workshops and conducted research on what type of program would address the …

Nothing Recedes Like Success - Risk Analysis And The Organizational Amplification Of Risks, William R. Freudenburg Jan 1992

Nothing Recedes Like Success - Risk Analysis And The Organizational Amplification Of Risks, William R. Freudenburg

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Professor Freudenburg believes that there is room for improvement in Risk analysis, particularly in drawing on systematic studies of human behavior in the calculation of real, empirical probabilities of failure. The need is argued to be especially acute where technological Risks are associated with low expected probabilities of failure and are managed by human organizations for extended periods of time. This permits complacency to set in.

Effects Of Fluoride On Precipitation And Hydrolysis Of Octacalcium Phosphate In An Experimental Model Simulating Enamel Mineralization During Amelogenesis, M. J. Mura-Galelli, H. Narusawa, T. Shimada, M. Iijima, T. Aoba

Cells and Materials

The present study was undertaken to investigate effects of fluoride at low concentrations on the precipitation of calcium phosphates on hydroxyapatite seeds in media resembling the enamel fluid composition. To this end, we used a new crystal growth model adopting a miniaturized reaction column. Experimental solutions had the composition similar to that found in the enamel fluid, except for calcium concentrations which were adjusted at 1.0 and 0.5 mM. Precipitation reactions taking place in the system at the higher supersaturation ([Ca] = 1 mM) were characterized by co-precipitation of platelike OCP and rod-like apatite crystals, while the reaction at the …

Effects Of Ecotropic Murine Retroviruses On The Dual-Function Cell Surface Receptor/Basic Amino Acid Transporter, Hao Wang, Esther Dechant, Michael Kavanaugh, R. Alan North, David Kabat Jan 1992

Effects Of Ecotropic Murine Retroviruses On The Dual-Function Cell Surface Receptor/Basic Amino Acid Transporter, Hao Wang, Esther Dechant, Michael Kavanaugh, R. Alan North, David Kabat

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The widely expressed Na(+)-independent transporter for basic amino acids (system y+) is the cell surface receptor (ecoR) for ecotropic host-range mouse retroviruses (murine leukemia viruses (MuLVs)), a class of retroviruses that naturally infects only mice or rats. Accordingly, expression of mouse ecoR cDNA in mink CCL64 fibroblasts yields cells (CEN cells) that have y+ transporter activity above the endogenous background and that bind and are infected by ecotropic MuLVs. The effect of ecotropic MuLV infection on expression of y+ transporter was analyzed in mouse and in mink CEN fibroblasts. Chronic infection with ecotropic MuLVs caused 50-70% loss (down-modulation) of mouse …
