Technical Assistance For Expanding Contraceptive Choice In India, John Townsend

Reproductive Health

One of the roles of the ANE OR/TA Project in India was to participate in policy dialogues with national counterparts, in the public sector and among NGOs, about expanding contraceptive choices, and to provide technical assistance for facilitating changes in service-delivery procedures. The public sector provides five contraceptive methods through its 11,500 hospitals and primary health care facilities. NGOs, private physicians, and pharmacies have access to a broader range of brands. While India is one of the world's leaders in contraceptive research, in recent years products have come to market slowly. New technology is often embraced, however the cost of …

Diagnostic Criteria And Management Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Holly Rogers Jan 1995

Diagnostic Criteria And Management Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Holly Rogers

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an entrapment neuropathy involving the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel. CTS is widely recognized as the most common of all nerve entrapment syndromes. CTS develops when irritation causes the tendon sheaths passing through the carpal tunnel to swell, constricting the tunnel and compressing the median nerve. Manifestations of CTS are varied, but usually include pain, numbness and weakness of the hand. Incidence of CTS has risen sharply in the past five years. Prevention of CTS and reduction of it's effects appears to be the best solution for this disorder. Physical therapists …

The Gtp-Bound Form Of The Yeast Ran/Tc4 Homologue Blocks Nuclear Protein Import And Appearance Of Poly(A)+ Rna In The Cytoplasm., Gabriel Schlenstedt, Claudio Saavedra, Jonathan D. Loeb, Charles N. Cole, Pamela A. Silver Jan 1995

Silver

Dartmouth Scholarship

Ran/TC4, a Ras-like GTP-binding protein, and its nucleotide exchanger, RCC1, have been implicated in control of protein movement into the nucleus and cytoplasmic accumulation of mRNA. Saccharomyces cerevisiae contains two homologues of the mammalian Ran/TC4, encoded by the GSP1 and GSP2 genes. We have constructed yeast strains that overproduce either wild-type Gsp1 or a form of Gsp1 with glycine-21 converted to valine (Gsp1-G21V), which we show stabilizes the GTP-bound form. Cells producing Gsp1-G21V have defects in localization of nuclear proteins; nuclear proteins accumulate in the cytoplasm following galactose induction of Gsp1-G21V. Similarly, cells producing Gsp1-G21V retain poly(A)+ RNA in their …

Dissociation Of Centrosome Replication Events From Cycles Of Dna Synthesis And Mitotic Division In Hydroxyurea-Arrested Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Ron Balczon, Liming Bao, Warren E. Zimmer, Kevin Brown, Raymond P. Zinkowski, B. R. Brinkley

University Faculty and Staff Publications

Relatively little is known about the mechanisms used by somatic cells to regulate the replication of the centrosome complex. Centrosome doubling was studied in CHO cells by electron microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy using human autoimmune anticentrosome antiserum, and by Northern blotting using the cDNA encoding portion of the centrosome autoantigen pericentriolar material (PCM)-1. Centrosome doubling could be dissociated from cycles of DNA synthesis and mitotic division by arresting cells at the G1/S boundary of the cell cycle using either hydroxyurea or aphidicolin. Immunofluorescence micros-copy using SPJ human autoimmune anticentrosome antiserum demonstrated that arrested cells were able to undergo numerous rounds …

Perceptions Of Control And Satisfaction With Hospital Birth Experiences For First-Time Mothers, Clelia Tedeschi

Theses : Honours

Satisfaction with childbirth is associated with women's future emotional wellbeing. This study examined whether first- time mother's antenatal expectations, postnatal evaluations of control during labour and delivery, and the discrepancy between expectations and evaluations were significant predictors of women's satisfaction with their childbirth experiences. The effect of medical interventions (e.g., obstetrical interventions and pain relief medication) on women's perceptions of control and satisfaction was also examined. The purposive sample of eighty first-time mothers, mean age 26 years (excluding women who had caesareans) delivered at the public hospital where they attended antenatal classes. During their fourth antenatal class women completed a …
