Vincent’S Disease The Causes Manifestations Results & Treatment, Frederick J. Schneider Jun 1930

Vincent’S Disease The Causes Manifestations Results & Treatment, Frederick J. Schneider

Bachelors’ Theses

Vincent’s infection is a disease of the soft tissues of the oral cavity. It was not until the last decade or two that Vincent’s disease was accorded the prominence which it merits. The incidence of this disease during the World’s War as an epidemic and the large number of cases occuring since then has brought this disease to the attention of the medical and dental profession. Today Vincent’s infection is encountered quite frequently and, in view of the fact that it is a cause of temporary and often prolonged invalidism, its causes, manifestations, results and treatment are constantly undergoing scientific …

Asepsis In Dentistry, Harry Sher Jun 1930

Asepsis In Dentistry, Harry Sher

Bachelors’ Theses

Up to the year 1860 surgery and sepsis were practically synonymous. Surgical procedures, accomplished as they were without the use of antiseptics, could not, of necessity, be done with the greatest of care, for the time element was the chief factor in success. In consequence, infections and diseases, as for example, pyemia, septicemia, erysipelas and hospital gangrene were the rule rather than the exception. Surgery was confined practically to amputations, while thoracic and abdominal operations were almost unknown.

Present Situation Of Dentifrices, Raymond A. Patrow

X-Ray And Its Interpretation, Sol V. Stern Jun 1930

X-Ray And Its Interpretation, Sol V. Stern

Bachelors’ Theses

The application of the x-ray as a means of diagnosis or pathological conditions about the teeth and jaws is a method that has achieved a position or the utmost importance in recent years. Its value has long been recognized by the surgeon in the diagnosis of grosser surgical lesions of the maxillary bones, such as fractures, tumors, impacted teeth and the like. Until recent, however, the dentist in general practice rarely found it necessary to resort to investigation by means of the x-ray. At the present time, to those who are familiar with its advantages, the constant employment of this …

Mottled Enamel, William Henry Stehly Jun 1930

Mottled Enamel, William Henry Stehly

Bachelors’ Theses

Perhaps one of the most puzzling of all dystrophies of the teeth is the macroscopical malformation called "Mottled Enamel".

This peculiarity is characterized by white, brown, and corn-colored opaque areas of enamel surrounded by apparently normal enamel. Upon examination, this enamel presents a smooth surface, though at times it may be slightly pitted. Nevertheless, the surface remains highly polished. If this surface is broken up with a bur, it is found to be of a chalky granular consistency, the whitish material at times containing the yellowish pigment which may occupy the entire thickness of the enamel. If these spots are …

The Modern Trend Of Prosthetics, Arlo M. Rahrig Jun 1930

The Modern Trend Of Prosthetics, Arlo M. Rahrig

Bachelors’ Theses

This is a short discussion on the technique of denture construction which is being employed by the most prominent and successful prosthetists of today. Since it is annoying to have a technical investigation misinterpreted because of lack of uniformly applied terms, there is a necessity to annex concise definitions to the technique. Thus a strenuous effort will be made to closely adhere to the original meaning of standard terms and to modify these or add to them as little as possible when they are comprehensive. In the past it was customary to include into an articulator technique many bombastic theories …

The author George (Georgia?) Plunkett Red was the wife of Samuel Clark Red (1861-1940). Dr. Red was the son of Texas pioneer physician Dr. George Clark Red. Dr. Samuel Clark Red was “the county physician of Harris County, one of the organizers of the Harris County Medical Society, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and president of the Texas Medical Association.”

Not much is known about the author, but given her husband’s position and family history, it can be surmised that she was interested in history and had access to some of the children of other pioneer medical …

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Physiology, Frank A. Dolce Jan 1930

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Physiology, Frank A. Dolce

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of this essay on the structure and function of the spleen is to bring together in somewhat concise form all the available knowledge concerning this organ up to the present moment. However, time and the difficulty of obtaining valuable articles has limited this essay considerably. The first few pages while not giving a very detailed historical background may be considered quite adequate for the purpose intended. The evolutionary development of the spleen is here considered in broad outline. The microscopic anatomy of the spleen and its function in relation to the blood have been considered in greater detail …

Developing A Speech Consciousness, Hazel Katherine Pritchard Jun 1929

Developing A Speech Consciousness, Hazel Katherine Pritchard

Bachelors’ Theses

An attempt to awaken an ideal in speech in the community is of vital importance. There is a need for intelligible, clear, forceful, speech with accuracy, precision, and delicacy, as outstanding characteristics. Proper provision should be made to remedy the present situation which fails to conform with this criterion. "Good speech ls universally recognized today as an economic, social, and cultural asset of the first rank. Yet in the United States the problem of defective speech grows daily more acute."

The Importance Of Asepsis In Root Canal Treatment And Filling, Raymond John Goral Jun 1929

The Importance Of Asepsis In Root Canal Treatment And Filling, Raymond John Goral

Bachelors’ Theses

“Today too many patients who brave the ordeal of having tee.th treated, later lose the teeth because of infection." This statement by Dr. Meisel of Pittsburgh before the Pennsylvania State Dental Society strikes at the cause of the failure of many root canals and their unpopularity among so many members of the dental profession. Sir William Osler said :-"Before antiseptic surgery, bacteria were more deadly than bullets." During the first week of April, 1927, the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Sir Joseph Lister, the father of antiseptic surgery was celebrated. Lister is credited with having saved, by his discoveries, …

Some Of The Interesting Facts In The Evolution Of The Treatment Of Pyorrhea Alveolaris, Irving Bernard Paul Jun 1929

Some Of The Interesting Facts In The Evolution Of The Treatment Of Pyorrhea Alveolaris, Irving Bernard Paul

Bachelors’ Theses

In attempting to write a paper on any topic relative to dentistry a student is handicapped in that none of his statements are based upon actual practical experience. Necessarily all the information gathered must come from the literature on the subject that in its makeup is not too technical. Essentially, then, this thesis will be a restating of the writings of those investigators who presented their findings in the most simplified manner and to the mind of the student arrived at the most logical conclusions of their findings. It will be the author's attempt to so make use of the …
