Knowledge, Attitude, Subjective Norm, Perceived Behavioral Control, Self-Efficacy, Personality, And Intention To Providing Palliative Care For Cancer Patients Among Nursing Students: A Structural Equation Model, Numpueng Prachyakoon
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Background: Cancer is a serious health related condition that causes suffering from pain and other distress symptoms. Palliative care (PC) is recommended as an appropriate care for patients. Nurses have an important responsibility to provide PC and nursing students should be prepared to perform these duties in the future. This study has purposes to evaluate the relationship between knowledge, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, self-efficacy, personality, and intention to providing palliative care for patients with terminal stage cancers among nursing students, using the structural equation modeling (SEM)Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted from all nursing students who are studying …

Palliative Care And Quality Of Life Improvement: A Benchmark Study, Rebecca Daniels
MSN Capstone Projects
This project provides an overview of the standard and regular implementation of palliative care versus early implementation of palliative care in patients with chronic or terminal illnesses. Palliative care is an essential component of healthcare that focuses on improving the quality of life and providing support to patients through holistic elements to patients and their families facing chronic and terminal illnesses. With evidence-based research, many articles have been published with implementation of early palliative care showing improvement in patient and even caregiver quality of life. This project includes evidence gathered from mixed methods of systematic review of existing literature, randomized …

Poetic Representations Of Covid-19 Narratives: An Exploration Of Emotional Experiences During The Pandemic, Isha Harshe, Lindy Davidson
The Qualitative Report
In pivotal moments of history like the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical to attend to and preserve the stories of different people experiencing the same phenomenon in their own ways. This project analyzed the public’s emotional experiences during the pandemic using methods of narrative and poetic inquiry. After reading 105 entries from the Pandemic Journaling Project, an online platform where people anonymously published journal entries reflecting on their pandemic experiences, narratives were categorized based on ten prominent emotional themes: anger, anxiety, fatigue, fear, loneliness, longing, loss, loss of control, stress, and uncertainty. Found poems were constructed for each emotion …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Aims: To understand nurses’ perceptions of volunteer support in health care settings. Background: Increasingly, volunteers provide specialised support to health care service users, requiring volunteers and nurses to work closely together. However, little is known about nurses’ perceptions of volunteer support. Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR checklist. A mixed-methods convergent integrative approach was taken guided by the JBI framework. Quantitative data were transformed into qualitative data for synthesis and descriptive thematic analysis. Six databases were searched (CINHAL+, EMBASE, PubMed, Scopus, PsycInfo, ProQuest Health and Medical Collection) on 24 January 2022 using terms related to nurses, perceptions, …

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs And Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment For Pain Management In Patients With Osteoarthritis: A Literature Review, Veenah K. J. Francis, Jennifer M. Jost, Allyson Jack, Timothy Johnson, Sarah Klein, Jake Darbhanga, Adam Hurwitz, Rohit S. Mehra, Holly B. Waters
HPD Articles
The pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA) involves the destruction of articular cartilage and the overgrowth of bone with lipping and spur formation. Nerve endings in the joint capsule and adjacent tissues play a major role in the pain mechanisms of osteoarthritis. This often requires patients to seek pain control measures beyond over-the-counter drugs, such as local anesthetics. Osteopathic manipulation treatment (OMT) is a conservative, non-pharmacological treatment that can be used to help treat chronic pain associated with OA. Other non-pharmacologic therapies include weight loss, exercise, physical therapy (PT), and assistive devices. However, pharmacologic management may be added synergistically to control flares …
Expanding The Volunteer Role To Include Advance Care Planning Knowledge, Andrea C. Leomo
Expanding The Volunteer Role To Include Advance Care Planning Knowledge, Andrea C. Leomo
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Transition patients at the end-of-life are those patients who are not mentally ready or physically eligible for hospice thus not enrolled in a Palliative or Hospice Program. Only one-third of the Transition patient census had completed and filed advance care plans. Healthcare providers are obligated to perform life-saving measures unless documented otherwise. A lack of advance care planning can create complicated scenarios and cause discordant care incidents.
Context: End-of-life care is a delicate subject to navigate conversations with patients. With holistic care being a large component of hospice and palliative care, it is important to have updated and accurate …
Improving Nursing Provision Of Patient Care In High Acuity Medical Units And Fostering Their Wellbeing By Providing Education On End-Of-Life Care And Finding Joy And Meaning In Work: A Quality Improvement Project, Donna Durant
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts
Abstract
Palliative care employs a multidisciplinary approach focusing on the quality of life for patients and their families experiencing the complexity of serious illness (Nelson, 2021). Due to shortages of palliative care specialists and a lack of nurse proficiency in caring for people with serious illnesses, integrating a palliative care approach is an ethical obligation for nursing (Parekh de Campos, 2022). Gaps in palliative care and end-of-life education for new nurses coming to the acute care setting in a large tertiary hospital in Southwestern Pennsylvania were identified.
Evidence-based education was delivered by advanced practice providers trained in this content area. …

Improving Patient Self-Efficacy, Readiness, And Completion Of Advance Care Planning Documents Using Prepare Documents And Advance Care Planning Group Referral, Marie Vassiliadis
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Advance Care Planning (ACP) is an ongoing discussion about medical decision making between a provider, patient, and support person. ACP can also include legal documentation in the form of an advance directive (AD). Nationally, only 36.7% of adults complete any form of AD for end-of-life care. Recently, ACP has become an important quality metric that many organizations are prioritizing. The purpose of this evidence-based project is to improve ACP readiness, self-efficacy, and documentation among patients at an internal medicine clinic using the PREPARE program and referral to an ACP group meeting. PREPARE for Your Care is an online program aimed …
A Literature Review On Understanding, Solidifying, And Expanding The Role Of Art Therapy In Death And Dying, Deborah D. Clark
A Literature Review On Understanding, Solidifying, And Expanding The Role Of Art Therapy In Death And Dying, Deborah D. Clark
University Honors Theses
The purpose of this literature review is to weave together an understanding of what research exists around art therapy in death and dying, what the role of art therapy is in end-of-life care and education, and determine what gaps exist for further study. When it comes to the topic of death and dying, most of us would agree that end-of-life care is extremely important, though this agreement often falls apart regarding what that care looks like, and how we do (or don't) talk and learn about death and dying. This review argues for an integrated holistic model of care concerning …
The Benefits Of Art Therapy On Stress And Anxiety Of Oncology Patients During Treatment, Helen Shiepe
The Benefits Of Art Therapy On Stress And Anxiety Of Oncology Patients During Treatment, Helen Shiepe
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Within the last ten years research on art therapy and its positive impact on oncology patients’ stress and anxiety during treatment has been minimal. Oncology patients whether they are children or adults when diagnosed experience similar reactions due to their diagnosis, treatment, and in some cases end of life care. The current question is whether or not art therapy does have a positive impact on decreasing the stress and anxiety with oncology patients while undergoing treatment. Deane, Fitch & Carmen (2000), discussed art therapy as a healing art that is “intended to integrate physical, emotional, and spiritual care by facilitating …
The Integration Of Catholic Mission And Ethics In Contributing To A Good Death, Noah Dimas
The Integration Of Catholic Mission And Ethics In Contributing To A Good Death, Noah Dimas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Catholic healthcare ethics exists within a morality that is under regular heavy scrutiny. This is furthered by the healthcare space itself becoming more secular as the greater society itself moves beyond the religious origins of healthcare. However, this does not have to be relegated to a negative. Rather, this can become a strong call to action for Catholic healthcare to rally together and advocate for itself in the wider healthcare space. This is especially true as these challenges to the Catholic moral-ethical framework begin to question the presence of both Catholic and religious healthcare as whole. These challenges, if left …
The Ethics Of Governance Of Data Analytics In Healthcare, Andrew Harrington
The Ethics Of Governance Of Data Analytics In Healthcare, Andrew Harrington
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent literature and studies on data governance usually focus on data ethics and governance from a specific country or industry, which has been mostly business, without considering the larger global impact that is affected. Data is a worldwide asset; thus, its implications and considerations should be viewed as such. Hence, this dissertation attempts to incorporate this view by weaving together topics in healthcare, such as the blending of finance and delivery, data governance at the micro and macro levels, data analytics in healthcare, ethics of AI and information management, and technology’s impact on end-of-life practices. Through highlighting these areas of …

National Cancer Control Plan Of The Korea: Current Status And The Fourth Plan (2021-2025), Kyu-Tae Han, Jae Kwan Jun, Jeong-Soo Im
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Cancer management has become a major policy goal for the government of the Korea. As such, the government introduced the National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP) to reduce the individual and social burdens caused by cancer and to promote national health. During the past 25 years, 3 phases of the NCCP have been completed. During this time, the NCCP has changed significantly in all aspects of cancer control from prevention to survival. The targets for cancer control are increasing, and although some blind spots remain, new demands are emerging. The government initiated the fourth NCCP in March 2021, with the vision …

Palliative Care In The Neonatal Population, Raegan Miller
Palliative Care In The Neonatal Population, Raegan Miller
MSN Capstone Projects
In more than 90% of cases of neonate deaths, terminal comfort care was provided in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (Soni et al., 2011). Palliative care teams are increasing, but not enough organizations have embraced the need for better palliative care guidelines. Nor do many organizations know when, how, or if palliative care should even be introduced. These events lead to comfort care measures being underutilized in the NICU for most newborn infants with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. Neonatal palliative care is discussed more than in years past, but little research has been dedicated to how early palliative care …

Obligatory Leaf Litter Spiders: An Ignored Guild?, Ryan Whitt, Sean O'Keefe
2023 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
There are over 100,000 described species of arachnids in the world; these include spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites, etc. There are some 45,000 described species of spiders worldwide, with 3,800 species known from within the United States. Spiders can be classified into several guilds, including sensing web weavers, sheet web weavers, space web weavers, orb web weavers, specialists, ambush hunters, and ground hunters. A guild for spiders is defined as a group of spiders that exploit similar resources using similar behaviors in the same habitat. We are interested in assessing the spiders that are obligatory leaf litter dwellers – these are …

Incarceration-Related Stigma And Caring Self-Efficacy Among Long-Term Care Nurses, Sandra D. Langston
Incarceration-Related Stigma And Caring Self-Efficacy Among Long-Term Care Nurses, Sandra D. Langston
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Background: A silver tsunami is occurring in U.S. prisons because of an unprecedented increase in the older population. Prisons are structurally ill-suited to care for this population and financially burdened with providing the necessary medical and nursing care. States have enacted legislation to afford justice-involved persons parole to manage chronic conditions in community-based long-term care (LTC) facilities. Changes in Medicaid regulations provide a seamless transition from prison to community long-term care for this population. However, it is not known if the stigma of justice involvement impacts the perception of long-term nurses concerning this population.
Aims/Purpose: This study examined the effects …

Facilitating Palliative Care In A Critical Access Hospital System: Implementation Of Screening And Educational Interventions, Michele Lovell
Facilitating Palliative Care In A Critical Access Hospital System: Implementation Of Screening And Educational Interventions, Michele Lovell
DNP Scholarly Projects
BACKGROUND: The United States health care system faces the dual challenge of an aging population with a concomitant increase in the presence of chronic and serious illness, the care of which accounts for the nation’s largest expenditure of burgeoning healthcare costs. Palliative care is specialized care for people with serious illness aimed at reducing suffering, optimizing quality of life, and enhancing medical decision making. An ample evidence base demonstrates that palliative care increases both quality of care and patient and family satisfaction while also reducing associated costs. The aim of this quality improvement project was to facilitate palliative care services …

AbstractAs part of investigating staff nurses’ reluctance to have serious illness conversations (SIC) at a local hospital, an educational deficit was noted. Nurses articulated they felt uneducated about how to have a SIC with a patient in need and questioned if the practice of conducting SICs was part of the nurses’ scope of practice in the New England State where they were employed. The purpose of this project was to create an educational tool and have it validated by a multidisciplinary group of experts. Once validated, the goal will be to educate nurses, raise awareness on the topic of SICs, …

Giving Effective And Timely Hospice Education To Lessen Participant Stress (Get Helps), Caroline Rose Carter
Master's Theses and Capstones
In 2022, 1.72 million people chose to use hospice as their end-of life care. This is a 6.8% increase from 2019, and the number of patients who choose to use hospice is increasing (Summers, 2022). The aim of this quality improvement (QI) study was to decrease levels of stress reported by the patient and informal caretakers by combining the information from the hospice program’s admission packet and other approved handouts, while standardizing the verbiage through a Flesch-Kincaid readability scale to an eighth-grade reading level. Pre-survey perceived stress scores averaged 22.97 on a modified Perceived-Stress Scale, and the mean of the …
