The Development Of A Clinical Speechreading Test For Hearing Handicapped Children Of Pre-Reading Level, Dolores Smith Butt
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
Speechreading is a valuable aid for the deaf and hard of hearing in maintaining communication with the hearing world. Success in school and society depend largely on an individual's ability to understand and use language, particularly spoken language. Speechreading is used to supplement auditory cues for understanding speech even by those with normal hearing. It is advisable for individuals with mild hearing losses to study speechreading for their future benefit because of the progressive nature of many types of hearing impairment.

A Problem Situation Unit In In-Service Education For Graduate Nurses, Bessie E. Irvine
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to develop a problem situation unit that could be used for stimulating graduate nurses to assume their responsibility regarding the use of pain and anxiety relieving drugs, namely narcotics, tranquilizers, and barbiturates.
The general use of these drugs presents a danger to public health when they are used indiscriminately. Therefore, nurses should be informed as to their responsibility to the doctor, the patient, and to themselves in regard to the use of these drugs.
This study was developed by presenting briefly the following:
-
Principles and history of group discussion and problem situation unit teaching; …

An Investigation Into Nursing Students' Awareness Of Emotional Needs Of Patients In A General Hospital, Sadie Sinclair
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Nursing educators consider that awareness of the emotional needs of a patient is a prerequisite to the formulation of a nursing problem. The problem of this study was to discover if the senior student in a specific college program in nursing is aware of the emotional needs of patients. A collection of senior research papers written over a period of sic [sic] years in a specific course assignment was studied. The attention was focused on the portion of the paper which dealt with the personality description of the patient. The direction given by the instructor did not emphasize any particular …

Natural And Experimental Infections Of Thelazia Californiensis Price (1930, Nematoda: Thelaziidae) With Descriptions Of The Adult And Larval Parasites, Howard S. Burnett
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this work was to determine the extent and effects of infestation of the eye worm of mammals, Thelazia californiensis, and to elucidate through experimentation or observation the mode of transmission.
A survey of literature revealed that thelaziasie (infestation by Thelazia species) may cause serious pathological changes in the eye and its adnexa, sometimes resulting in blindness. It was found that reports of thelaziasis in the United States were (with two exceptions) of cases in California. It was further found that T. californiensis has been reported in a wider variety of host than has any of other …

The Comparative Ultrastructure Of The Choroid Plexus In Certain Animal Species, Norman M. Case
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Employing the electron microscope, the writer studied the ultra-structure of the choroid plexus of the lateral and the 4th ventricles of the brain in seven species of animals comparatively. No such extensive comparative investigation has been made before with this instrument. The animals represent, in the main, species which have served previously, both in physiological and light microscopical studies on this organ, and consist of several specimens each of the frog, the opossum, the hamster, the guinea pig, the rat, the rabbit and the dog.
Materials and methods. A technique of sacrificing the animal under deep anesthesia by decapitation …

Subliminal Stimulus Recall In Persons Who Are And Are Not Aware Of The Stimulus, Delayne Hudspeth
Subliminal Stimulus Recall In Persons Who Are And Are Not Aware Of The Stimulus, Delayne Hudspeth
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
In this study an effort was made to determine, in part, if the fears of persons who have been decrying the use of subliminal stimulation in advertising were realistic. Accepting the work of other scholars that this phase of perception does exist, this writer attempted to explore one facet of the problem with this hypothesis: persons who receive subliminal stimuli will be more apt to consciously recall the stimuli if they are aware that the stimuli are being given.
Research on this phase of subliminal perception was done with visual stimuli on students in beginning psychology courses. Given a pre-test …
The Effect Of Preweanling Administration Of Carbohydrates Used In Infant Formulas On Subsequent Dental Caries In White Rats, Erlinda Amor Romulo
The Effect Of Preweanling Administration Of Carbohydrates Used In Infant Formulas On Subsequent Dental Caries In White Rats, Erlinda Amor Romulo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The high incidence of tooth decay, one of the most common diseases found in all age groups, gives a reason for the study of methods to prevent dental caries. Certain dietary factors, specifically carbohydrates, have been implicated in the decay process. Since diet influences both the oral and systemic environments in which the teeth develop, mature, age, and decay (1), many studies have been conducted to determine the effects of oral administration of different carbohydrates on dental caries. The extrinsic effects of diet on the mature erupted tooth have, however, been the major concern of the research (2).
The first …
