Multimorbidity in the elderly is a major public health issue with serious consequences. This study investigated the effects of health promotion programs on perceived self-efficacy and self-care practices among the elderly with multimorbidity using a quasi-experimental study design from February to July 2021. The study samples were the elderly from Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand, selected by a multistage random sampling technique. The experimental and control groups each comprised 40 elderlies with multimorbidity. All elderly participants took part in a 12-week health promotion program. The perceived self-efficacy and self-care practices of the study samples were assessed using interviews, …

Center on Aging Staff Publications
Maintaining function in older adults is key to the quality of life and longevity. This study examined the potential impact of falls on accelerating further deterioration over time in gait, balance, physical activity, depression, fear of falling, and motor capacity in older adults. 163 ambulatory older adults (age = 76.5 ± 7.7 years) participated and were followed for 6 months. They were classified into fallers or non-fallers based on a history of falling within the past year. At baseline and 6 months, all participants were objectively assessed for gait, balance, and physical activity using wearable sensors. Additional assessments included psychosocial …

Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research
Adherence to taking medication is essential for patients with chronic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). There have been many studies about the association between medication adherence and HbA1c levels, but few have used Adherence Refills and Medications Scale (ARMS) questionnaire and Proportion of Days Covered (PDC) method to measure adherence in Indonesian population. The aim of this study were to assess the association of medication adherence to HbA1c levels and compare two methods of adherence measurements. This research was conducted at Pasar Minggu Public Health Center, Jakarta using a cross-sectional design. The adherence assessment was conducted using …

Background: Physical inactivity is common during hospitalization. Physical activity has been described in different inpatient populations but never across a hospital. Purpose: To describe inpatient movement behavior and associated factors throughout a single university hospital. Methods: A prospective observational study was performed. Patients admitted to clinical wards were included. Behavioral mapping was undertaken for each participant between 9AM and 4PM. The location, physical activity, daily activity, and company of participants were described. Barriers to physical activity were examined using linear regression analyses. Results: In total, 345 participants from 19 different wards were included. The mean (SD) age was 61 (16) …
The Impact Of Increased Interdisciplinary Communication On Hospital Admission Rates In The Geriatric Population: An Integrative Review, Molly K. Langston
The Impact Of Increased Interdisciplinary Communication On Hospital Admission Rates In The Geriatric Population: An Integrative Review, Molly K. Langston
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The medical complexity of geriatric residents puts them at an increased risk of hospital readmissions related to coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes, along with other chronic diseases. Geriatric residents of assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care facilities should hold a particular interest to stakeholders, as the simple intervention of increasing early communication and correspondence regarding chronic diseases can have a great impact on quality improvement outcomes as well as financial burden of the institution. Additionally, interdisciplinary communication can be individualized to meet the needs of each geriatric resident in order to reduce the …
Trends In Health Outcomes Before And After Long Term Care Federal Regulations Limited Antipsychotic Medication Use: A Secondary Data Analysis, Karen Robson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trends in resident falls did not significantly change, although trends in serious injury from falls declined ten years after regulations restricted antipsychotic medications in long-term care facilities. Trends in functional and continence status worsened after the regulations were implemented.

Vaccine hesitancy is considered a major barrier to achieving herd immunity against COVID-19. While multiple alternative and synergistic approaches including heterologous vaccination, booster doses, and antiviral drugs have been developed, equitable vaccine uptake remains the foremost strategy to manage pandemic. Although none of the currently approved vaccines are live-attenuated, several reports of disease flares, waning protection, and acute-onset syndromes have emerged as short-term adverse events after vaccination. Hence, scientific literature falls short when discussing potential long-term effects in vulnerable cohorts. The COVAD-2 survey follows on from the baseline COVAD-1 survey with the aim to collect patient-reported data on the long-term …

Hospital Nursing Factors Associated With Decreased Odds Of Mortality In Older Adult Medicare Surgical Patients With Depression, Aparna Kumar, Douglas Sloane, Linda Aiken, Matthew Mchugh
College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations
Background: Depression is common, costly, and has deleterious effects in older adult surgical patients. Little research exists examining older adult surgical patient outcomes and depression and the potential for nursing factors to affect these outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between hospital nursing resources, 30-day mortality; and the impact of depression on this relationship.
Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study employing a national nurse survey, hospital data, and Medicare claims data from 2006-2007. The sample included: 296,561 older adult patients, aged 65-90, who had general, orthopedic, or vascular surgery in acute care general hospitals …
Preventing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injury In High-Risk Patients, Sahara Thapa
Preventing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injury In High-Risk Patients, Sahara Thapa
Master's Projects and Capstones
Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injury (HAPI) can be costly for Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) and painful for the patients. Most pressure injuries are considered preventable, but many patients die each year from complications from pressure injuries. Pressure injury treatment costs millions of dollars annually, which could be spent on other treatments. A quality improvement (QI) project was formulated to address pressure-related injuries and improve patient care outcomes in one skilled nursing facility in Northern California. Based on a review of current evidence, HAPI prevention education was implemented for all patient care staff. The education focused on skin assessment, risk factors, staging of …
Improving Our Understanding Of Driving Changes In Preclinical And Early Symptomatic Alzheimer's Disease: The Role Of Naturalistic Driving Studies, Catherine M Roe
Improving Our Understanding Of Driving Changes In Preclinical And Early Symptomatic Alzheimer's Disease: The Role Of Naturalistic Driving Studies, Catherine M Roe
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Research on how preclinical and early symptomatic Alzheimer's disease (AD) impacts driving behavior is in its infancy, with several important research areas yet to be explored. This paper identifies research gaps and suggests priorities for driving studies over the next few years among those at the earliest stages of AD. These priorities include how individual differences in demographic and biomarker measures of AD pathology, as well as differences in the in-vehicle and external driving environment, affect driving behavior. Understanding these differences is important to developing future interventions to increase driving safety among those at the earliest stages of AD.

A major challenge of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) is to translate phenotypic associations into biological insights. Here, we integrate a large GWAS on blood lipids involving 1.6 million individuals from five ancestries with a wide array of functional genomic datasets to discover regulatory mechanisms underlying lipid associations. We first prioritize lipid-associated genes with expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) colocalizations and then add chromatin interaction data to narrow the search for functional genes. Polygenic enrichment analysis across 697 annotations from a host of tissues and cell types confirms the central role of the liver in lipid levels and highlights the selective …
Employment Discrimination’S Impact On African American’S Professional And Personal Lives, Trey D. Williams
Employment Discrimination’S Impact On African American’S Professional And Personal Lives, Trey D. Williams
Information Systems Undergraduate Honors Theses
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 makes it illegal to discriminate against a person because of their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The law also protects individuals from retaliation if they complain about discrimination, participate in an employment discrimination proceeding, or reasonably oppose discrimination. Although Title VII makes discrimination illegal, it is still present in the workplace. The objective of this thesis is to discuss employee discrimination based on race and sex. Specifically, I will analyze the current workplace discrimination against African American men and women as well as the psychological, physiological, and emotional effects …

External Student Research Opportunities
Occurring in approximately 6-8% of all pregnancies, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are one of the major causes of pregnancy-related maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although there are many low-cost medications that can adequately treat this condition, patient adherence to these medications can vary widely. The objective of this study was to assess adherence to anti-hypertensive medication by pregnant women and to identify the social and demographic factors associated with incomplete adherence. Using a cohort of 28,008 publicly-insured women who initiated anti-hypertensive treatment within the first 20 weeks of gestation, we assessed dosage within biweekly gestational intervals, created …

Listening To Remotely Monitored Home-Based Preferred Music For Pain In Older Adults With Low Back Pain: A Pilot Study Of Feasibility And Acceptability, Setor Kofi Sorkpor
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background: Low back pain (LBP) is a complex, multifaceted, and widespread condition that impairs the quality of life of older adults aged 65 years or older. Although nonpharmacologic interventions informed by the biopsychosocial model are recommended as first-line therapy for LBP, pharmacologic therapies, including opioids, are commonly used as first-line interventions in practice. This could be attributed to a lack of understanding of the analgesic properties of most nonpharmacologic interventions. Nonetheless, some nonpharmacologic therapies, such as passive music listening, have been shown to modulate pain via pathways that target the neurophysiological mechanisms associated with pain.

Passive remote monitoring is a relatively new technology that may support older adults to age in place. However, current knowledge about the effectiveness of this technology in extending older adults' independence is lacking. Therefore, we conducted a scoping review of studies examining passive remote monitoring to systematically synthesize evidence about the technology's effectiveness as an intervention. Our initial search of Embase, CINAHL, PubMed, and Scopus databases identified 486 unique articles. Of these, 14 articles met our inclusion criteria. Results show that passive remote monitoring technologies are being used in innovative and diverse ways to support older adults aging in place …

Life In An Endemic Covid-19: Older Adults' Well-Being, Activity, And Perceptions, Rachel Ngu, Micah Tan, Jia Ying Low
ROSA Research Briefs
The current research brief provides a preliminary examination of whether older adults have been able to ‘return’ to the pre-pandemic way of life in an endemic COVID-19. To do this, we look at several key indicators, including (1) tracking older adults’ overall life satisfaction, activity levels, and trust in government over the past 3 years, (2) older adults’ confidence to resume activities, as well as subjective perceptions about their safety when leaving the home in an endemic COVID-19, and (3) older adults’ ability to adhere to the Home Recovery Program (HRP), where individuals with COVID-19 are able to recover from …

Older adults with cardiovascular disease (CVD) contend with deficits across multiple domains of health due to age-related physiological changes and the impact of CVD. Multimorbidity, polypharmacy, cognitive changes, and diminished functional capacity, along with changes in the social environment, result in complexity that makes provision of CVD care to older adults challenging. In this review, we first describe the history of geriatric cardiology, an orientation that acknowledges the unique needs of older adults with CVD. Then, we introduce 5 essential principles for meeting the needs of older adults with CVD: 1) recognize and consider the potential impact of multicomplexity; 2) …

Nurses play a huge role in the medication administration process. Medication administration errors have been around for a while and keep increasing in number. Communication amongst healthcare professionals helps prevent medication errors from happening. Communication increases the knowledge that patients have about their care to reduce any adverse errors that could occur. Medication administration programs, like MedEye and IndentRx, help prevent medication errors. A way to familiarize nurses with medication is to start implementing the administration process in the nursing program curriculum. There are different influential factors that can result in medication errors. The similar packaging of the medications alongside …

The current study aims to investigate the mediating effect of perceived control over the future and the moderating effect of empathy on the association between stressful experiences and PTSD symptoms among college students in China in response to COVID-19. A sample of 1,225 college students (70.69% were female, M age=20.22 years, SD=2.02) were recruited using web-based surveys at wave 1 (W1) and wave 2 (W2) longitudinally. Results showed that COVID-19-related stressful experiences were significantly associated with PTSD symptoms. Perceived control over the future partially mediated the relationship between these two variables (indirect effect size=0.09, p < 0.01). Empathy significantly moderated the path from perceived control over the future to PTSD symptoms, suggesting that the association was stronger for individuals with higher levels of empathy. Findings suggest a protective effect of perceived control over the future on college students’ PTSD symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Such a protective effect was intensified by empathy. Future intervention to manage PTSD symptoms should be tailored to positive future expectations and empathy.

In a future where home health care is no longer an information silo, patient information will be communicated along transitions in care to improve care. Evidence-based practice in the United States supports home health care patients to see their primary care team within the first two weeks of hospital discharge to reduce rehospitalization risk. We sought to identify a parsimonious set of home health care data to be communicated to primary care for the post-hospitalization visit. Anticipating electronic dataset communication, we investigated the completeness of the international reference terminology, Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC), for coverage of the …

Introduction: Surgical skill evaluation while performing minimally invasive surgeries is a highly complex task. It is important to objectively assess an individual's technical skills throughout surgical training to monitor progress and to intervene when skills are not commensurate with the year of training. The miniaturization of wireless wearable platforms integrated with sensor technology has made it possible to noninvasively assess muscle activations and movement variability during performance of minimally invasive surgical tasks. Our objective was to use electromyography (EMG) to deconstruct the motions of a surgeon during robotic suturing (RS) and distinguish quantifiable movements that characterize the skill of an …
