Dental Hygiene Manpower Distribution In Virginia, Christine Ann Nielsen Jul 1990

Dental Hygiene Manpower Distribution In Virginia, Christine Ann Nielsen

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this investig~tion was to conduct a comprehensive dental hygiene manpower study in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Data were collected to establish the present number of dental hygienists and dentists in Virginia; the estimated number of practicing and nonpracticing dental hygienists and dentists in Virginia; and the past, present and forecasted employment opportunities for dental hygienists in Virginia. Primary and secondary data were collected via professional associations, state regulatory boards, health agencies, employment and educational commissions and labor statistics bureaus. Frequency distributions were used to analyze the data. Results suggest that there is an adequate supply of dental …

Guanine Nucleotide-Binding Protein, Alpha I-3, Directly Activates A Cation Channel In Rat Renal Inner Medullary Collecting Duct Cells., Douglas B. Light, Dennis A. Ausiello, Bruce A. Stanton Jul 1989

Guanine Nucleotide-Binding Protein, Alpha I-3, Directly Activates A Cation Channel In Rat Renal Inner Medullary Collecting Duct Cells., Douglas B. Light, Dennis A. Ausiello, Bruce A. Stanton

Dartmouth Scholarship

We examined whether GTP binding proteins (G proteins) regulate sodium conducting channels in the apical membrane of renal inner medullary collecting duct (IMCD) cells and thereby modulate sodium absorption. Patch clamp studies were conducted on inside-out patches of the apical membrane of IMCD cells grown in primary culture. Guanosine 5'-triphosphate (GTP) and the nonhydrolyzable GTP analogue, GTP gamma S, which activate G proteins, increased the open probability of the cation channel. In contrast, the nonhydrolyzable GDP analogue, GDP beta S, which decreases G protein activity, inhibited the channel. Pertussis toxin also reduced the open probability of the channel. Addition of …

Characteristics Of Low Risk Women Who Experience Infant Mortality, Linda S.' Forte'

MSN Research Projects

This research study described the relationship of risk factors associated with high rates of infant m ortality and age in mothers who have experienced the death o f th e ir infants. The research question which guided this study was what is the relationship of stim u li, focal, contextual, or residual, to mothers who have experienced the death of th e ir infants and are classified as eith er high or low risk as determined by age? The Forte' Questionnaire was administered to 20 subjects selected from health departments in two Northwest Alabama counties. The sample was 70% black …

The T(11;14)(P15;Q11) In A T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Cell Line Activates Multiple Transcripts, Including Ttg-1, A Gene Encoding A Potential Zinc Finger Protein, Elizabeth A. Mcguire, Richard D. Hockett, Karen M. Pollock, Marty F. Bartholdi, Stephen J. O'Brien, Stanley J. Korsmeyer

Biology Faculty Articles

Interchromosomal translocations within lymphoid neoplasms frequently involve the antigen receptor genes. We cloned the breakpoints of the t(11;14)(p15;q11) in a CD3-negative T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell line (RPMI 8402) in order to identify new genes potentially involved in T-cell neoplasia. An extensive comparison of both breakpoints and their germ line counterparts indicated that an inadvertant recombinase-mediated break at chromosome segment 11p15 recombined with the delta T-cell receptor at 14q11. The derivative 11 breakpoint resembles a coding joint in which 11p15 rather than a variable region was introduced 5' to a Dδ1Dδ2Jδ1 intermediate rearrangement. Conversely, the …

An Exploratory Study Of Research Utilization By Virginia Nurse Educators, Evelyn M. Clingerman May 1989

An Exploratory Study Of Research Utilization By Virginia Nurse Educators, Evelyn M. Clingerman

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

The purposes of this study were: to explore research utilization by three groups of Virginia nursing educators; and to determine if differences in stages of diffusion existed between nurse educators working in hospital diploma, associate degree and baccalaureate degree settings within the Commonwealth of Virginia. A stratified random sample included 28 hospital diploma, 41 associate degree and 37 baccalaureate degree nurse educators from the Commonwealth of Virginia, who completed the Nurse Educator Questionnaire (NEQ). Two free-response questions were used to identify factors which the nurse educators perceived as inhibitors and facilitators to research utilization. The results of a two-step mailed …

Adolescent Pregnancy And Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Case Report, Ruby L. Holloway, Richard Smith Dec 1988

Adolescent Pregnancy And Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Case Report, Ruby L. Holloway, Richard Smith

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

More than 1 million teenagers become pregnant every year in the United States. Nearly one-half of the pregnancies are carried to term, while a similar number end in abortion. In Michigan this amounts to approximately 34,000 teenage pregnancies (ages 15 to 19). These adolescent patients have a high incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Of the pregnant teens at Henry Ford Hospital. 60% present with one or more STDs. We discuss the case of a 13-year-old pregnant girl who presented at five weeks estimated gestation with gonorrhea, chlamydia, and appendiceal perforation, resulting in subsequent spontaneous abortion. Further discussion focuses on …

Occurrence Of Alzheimer Disease In Michigan: An Epidemiologic Review Of Rates And Risk Factors, Christine Cole Johnson Jun 1988

Occurrence Of Alzheimer Disease In Michigan: An Epidemiologic Review Of Rates And Risk Factors, Christine Cole Johnson

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Alzheimer disease is a progressive degenerative neurological disorder of insidious onset characterized by the deterioration of cognitive functioning. Little is known about the etiology and epidemiology of this condition. The only risk factor consistently associated with Alzheimer disease is advancing age. As the population of the elderly continues to grow, many public agencies, including those in Michigan, are concerned about social, personal, and financial implications and seek estimates of the number of people with dementia. To date, mortality rates based on vital statistics have been noninformative because Alzheimer disease is difficult lo diagnose clinically and has been considered to be …

Watchful Waiting Vs. Immediate Transurethral Prostatectomy For Symptomatic Prostatism, Albert G. Mulley Jr, Michael J. Barry, Floyd J. Fowler, John E. Wennberg May 1988

Watchful Waiting Vs. Immediate Transurethral Prostatectomy For Symptomatic Prostatism, Albert G. Mulley Jr, Michael J. Barry, Floyd J. Fowler, John E. Wennberg

Dartmouth Scholarship

The rate of resection for benign prostatic hypertrophy shows considerable variability among small geographic areas. To help inform the decision to recommend prostatectomy to men with prostatism without signs of chronic retention, we performed a decision analysis to compare the expected outcomes with immediate transurethral resection and watchful waiting. Data used in the model originated from the medical literature, Medicare claims data, and patient interview studies. In our base-case for 70-year-old men, immediate surgery resulted in the loss of 1.01 months of life expectancy, but when adjustments were made for quality of life, immediate surgery was favored with a net …
