Periodontal Pocket Reduction Following Gingival Curettage, Robert B. Tandy May 1970

Periodontal Pocket Reduction Following Gingival Curettage, Robert B. Tandy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate pocket reduction following gingival curettage. The effects of temporary pressure packing, inflammation, oral hygiene, pocket depth, age and sex of the patient were evaluated.

Three hundred twenty-eight periodontal pockets were studied in forty-one adult patients selected with interdental lesions ranging from 3.0 - 7.5 mm. in depth. Pocket depth and gingival height were measured preoperatively, one month postoperatively and two months postoperatively. The mean change in pocket depth and gingival height was calculated and statistical significance was determined for all measurements.

The results show that after a two-month postoperative evaluation following gingival …

The Effect Of Neutral Bath In Alleviating Stress Due To Group Psychotherapy, Olga L. Walek, Arlene M. Lee May 1970

The Effect Of Neutral Bath In Alleviating Stress Due To Group Psychotherapy, Olga L. Walek, Arlene M. Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A preliminary study showed that the experience of group psychotherapy produced a mean elevation in systolic blood pressure of 4.4 mm. of mercury, and diastolic blood pressure of 3.3 mm. of mercury, and a mean decrease of pulse of 3.0. An experimental study was done by comparing the effectiveness of three procedures; neutral bath, bedrest, and ward activities in lowering blood pressure and pulse after group psychotherapy. Studies had been done to determine stress due to emotional stimuli and its effect upon the physiological and psychological reactions of the body, but there were no actual experimental studies found dealing with …

The Role Of The Articular Eminence In Mandibular Protrusion, Norman E. Corbett May 1970

The Role Of The Articular Eminence In Mandibular Protrusion, Norman E. Corbett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Since movements of the TMJ may be translatory, rotary, or both, the form of the articular eminence becomes an integral part of the anatomy of the joint and is important in an understanding of TMJ function. A cephalometric technique was developed to accurately determine the anatomical form of the articular eminence. From a series of cephalograms, taken in various mandibular positions, the protrusive condylar path was determined. This path was also determined from a gnathological recording technique. The paths obtained were observed to be the same. The condylar path and articular eminence curves were mathematically expressed by computer programmed quadratic …

Some Physiological Effects Of The Bed Bath On The Cardiovascular System Of Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients, Arleen Canfield May 1970

Some Physiological Effects Of The Bed Bath On The Cardiovascular System Of Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients, Arleen Canfield

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

At Loma Linda University, a protocol has been in effect that specifies the kinds and amounts of activity that acute myocardial infarction patients may have. The protocol has described six activity levels with each successive level permitting more activity. The patient must have reached the fourth level of progression before he is permitted to receive a complete bed bath. The problem studied in this research: As the result of receiving a bed bath, what physiological effects will occur in the cardiovascular system of patients with acute myocardial infarction?

The theoretical framework for this study consisted of the following: recommendations for …

Correlation Of The Epiphyseal Closure And Ossification Of The Ulnar Sesamoid Bone Of The Metacarpophalangeal Joint Of The Thumb, Hilbert Lentz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if there is a correlation between the times of closure of the epiphyses of the hand and the time of ossification of the ulnar sesamoid of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb.

The time for these events was studied in twenty-three males and fourteen females for which appropriate hand radiographs were available. Radiographs were made every three months and epiphyseal closure was studied in these beginning with the one in which the sesamoid first appeared. The maximum time for study after sesamoid closure was twenty-four months.

Only one subject showed complete closure …

The Rationale Of Apical Resection In Retrofilling Procedures, Raleigh R. Cummings May 1970

The Rationale Of Apical Resection In Retrofilling Procedures, Raleigh R. Cummings

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Extracted human teeth were used in a study to determine the affect of an apical resection on the elimination of accessory canals and apical ramifications. The apices of 60 roots were resected 2 to 3 mm, an undercut slot preparation was fashioned and retrofillings of Cavit, zinc oxide and eugenol, and amalgam were placed. The identical procedure was carried out on another group of roots, except the apices were slightly beveled to the labial without any significant resection.

The apical portion of all the roots were immersed to the midroot level in methylene blue dye and subsequently dried. An examination …

A Comparative Roentgenographic Cephalometric Study Of The Facial Profile Of Orthodontic Patients Treated At Loma Linda University With Winners Of The "Smiles Of The Year" Contest, Romeo I. Stoll

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The "Smiles of the Year" winners and patients treated at Loma Linda University by the extraction or non-extraction approach were compared by linear and angular variables of skeletal, dental and soft tissue components. These findings were analyzed statistically to determine significant differences in the profile and detect the relationship between the integument and hard structures.

The following conclusions were drawn from this investigation to reflect the trend of treatment at Loma Linda University.

  1. After treatment the patients had less skeletal convexity, but were more convexity than established standards.
  2. The incisors of the patients treated by the extraction approach were less …

Sensory Stimulation To Produce Micturition In The Cerebral Vascular Accident Patient, Mary Alice Pearce May 1970

Sensory Stimulation To Produce Micturition In The Cerebral Vascular Accident Patient, Mary Alice Pearce

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An experimental study was conducted in a university and a convalescent hospital using eight female CVA patients with urinary incontinence to test the hypothesis that the experimental technique of icing and brushing LI dermatome skin area would increase the probability that the CVA patient would void within a prescribed time and place. A modified one group method was used in which the patient served as her own control by participating in two types of bladder training programs over an eight to twelve hour period for four consecutive days. Program A used the experimental technique; Program B omitted the experimental technique. …

A Comparison Of Object Dropping And Echoic Vocalizing As Response Modes To Pure Tone Stimuli Among Mentally Retarded Children, Elton L. Stewart Apr 1970

A Comparison Of Object Dropping And Echoic Vocalizing As Response Modes To Pure Tone Stimuli Among Mentally Retarded Children, Elton L. Stewart

Dissertations and Theses

Mentally retarded children demonstrate an abnormally high incidence of hearing impairment, and many, particularly those with IQs below 40, are difficult for audiologists to test. Consequently, there is great need among this population for investigating response modes and conditioning of responses to auditory stimuli. A review of the literature reveals no studies of echoic vocalization as a conditioned response mode to pure tone stimuli among the retarded.

In this study, a heterogenous sample of 13 moderately and severely retarded children ranging in age from 7 years 7 months to 16 years 3 months were compared on two response modes to …

A Comparative In Vitro Metabolic Study Of Certain Pesticidal Phenyl N-Methyl-Carbamates, Larry A. Wheeler Apr 1970

A Comparative In Vitro Metabolic Study Of Certain Pesticidal Phenyl N-Methyl-Carbamates, Larry A. Wheeler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Two critical parameters in the evaluation of the toxicological hazards of the use of carbamate pesticides are: (1) a rapid, sensitive, and precise analytical method of identification of the carbamate and its metabolites; and (2) their metabolism. A method in this study was developed whereby various carbamates and their metabolites could be chromatographed in the gaseous phase. Also, a comparative in vitro study of 15,000 g liver supernatants from human, rat, and dog was performed. Additional tissues investigated for metabolic activity toward the carbamates, Zectran and Mesurol, were kidney (from the dog only) and various blood fractions (red blood cells, …

Studies On The Physiology Of Infection Of Micrococcus Lysodeikticus By Bacteriophage N1, John Arthur Mayo Mar 1970

Studies On The Physiology Of Infection Of Micrococcus Lysodeikticus By Bacteriophage N1, John Arthur Mayo

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The experiments reported in this dissertation were aimed at studying two problems. The first of these was the occurrence and role of DNA rings in cells of Micrococcus lysodeikticus infected by any of several bacteriophages, particularly bacteriophage N1. Difficulties in labeling vegetative N1 DNA with radioactive precursors led to the second problem, utilization of nucleosides by bacteriophage N1-infected N1-lysodeikticus.

It had been shown previously that N1-infected M. lysodeikticus contains during the latent period a DNA ring of the same molecular weight as the linear DNA isolated from the intact phage.

This result was confirmed and extended to include M. lysodeikticus …

Studies On Antibody Mediated Suppression Of The Immune Response, John W. Safford Jr. Jan 1970

Studies On Antibody Mediated Suppression Of The Immune Response, John W. Safford Jr.

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

It is well known that passive antibody will specifically suppress an immune response to the corresponding antigen. The goal of this study was to determine if passive antibody had any effect on the development of immunological memory. The nature of the immune response to a second injection of sheep red blood cells (SRBC) following a primary immune response suppressed by passive antibody was investigated. C57Bl/Ks mice received a primary injection of SRBC and homologous anti-SRBC serum; 14 days later they were challenged with a second injection of SRBC. The immune response was evaluated by determining the number of cells synthesizing …

A Dissonance Approach To Persuasion, Robert Wayne Norton Jan 1970

A Dissonance Approach To Persuasion, Robert Wayne Norton

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

What moves is the essence of persuasion theory. Consequently, motivation theories interest the theorist examining persuasion theory. The theory of cognitive dissonance, in particular, suggests a meaningful approach to persuasion which offers both pragmatic and theoretical insights. Festinger’s theory of cognitive dissonance holds that when a person has two cognitions or “knowledges” which are inconsistent with on another, a state of dissonance or psychological discomfort occurs. The existence of the discomfort motivates the person to attempt to alleviate the inconsistency in order to restore the organism to a state of equilibrium or consonance. A dissonance approach to persuasion has two …

New Concepts In The Management Of Neonatal Jaundice: Use Of Enzyme Induction And Phototherapy, Harold M. Maurer Jan 1970

New Concepts In The Management Of Neonatal Jaundice: Use Of Enzyme Induction And Phototherapy, Harold M. Maurer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

All the observations suggest that phenobarbital and light may be of therapeutic value in controlling neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. In pregnancies in which one might anticipate increased bilirubin formation by the newborn baby, the use of phenobarbital during pregnancy and in the neonatal period, and exposure of the infant to light may provide methods other than exchange transfusion to reduce the concentration of serum bilirubin in the infant. Clinical trials should proceed cautiously, however, since phenobarbital is known to stimulate the activity of liver microsomal enzymes that metabolize, steroids, hormones, and other normal body substrates. It is not known whether this effect …

The Development Of A Comprehensive Health Care Program For Patients With Active Tuberculosis, Grace G. Eddison, Barbara M. Farmer Jan 1970

The Development Of A Comprehensive Health Care Program For Patients With Active Tuberculosis, Grace G. Eddison, Barbara M. Farmer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Concepts basic to effective medical care evolved from the development of a comprehensive health service program for patients with tuberculosis. The key to success was found in a basic philosophy underlying all interpersonal relationships-the conviction that all men are equal. This philosophy then became the motivating force behind the creation of a functioning multidisciplinary team in which there was developed a freedom of relationships between each team member, and between team members and patients. The effectiveness of this approach in comprehensive medical care was illustrated by examples of special services and programming which were designed to reach all levels of …
