Gender Inequalities And Childbearing: A Qualitative Study Of Two Maternity Units In Nepal, Lesley Milne, Jillian C M Ireland Ms, Edwin Van Teijlingen, Vanora Hundley, Padam P. Simkhada
Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)
The role and status of women in South Asian countries like Nepal are widely recognised to be lower than that of men. This gender inequality can be found throughout all levels of society. Our study is about the influence of gender on pregnancy and childbirth, which are very much in the female domain in South Asia, both at home and in health facilities.
A mixed-method, qualitative research study was undertaken in two birthing facilities in Kathmandu Valley to examine barriers to women accessing these services from the perspective of hospital staff. Thematic analysis identified seven subthemes related to gender, namely: …

Utilization Of Care By Infants With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome In Delaware, Michele K. Savin, Msn, Nnp-Bc
College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations
From 1999-2013, the nationwide incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) due to maternal drug use rose from 1.5/1000 to 6/1000 hospital births. There is a dearth of information regarding what happens to these children when they are discharged. The purpose of this Practice Inquiry Project is to utilize existing Delaware Medicaid data to retrospectively explore the utilization of services and gaps in care for the infant with NAS in the first year of life. Key findings include less than expected well child visits and immunizations along with higher hospital re-admission rates. This represents missed opportunities for care, also demonstrating the …

Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019
Objective: To determine the effectiveness of cranberry juice consumption as prophylaxis for urinary tract infection (UTI) in women with a history of recurrent UTI. Methods: Systematic literature review using Google Scholar with search terms “cranberry juice prophylaxis.” Results: Our search resulted in three randomized-control trials (RCTs), two of which demonstrated no benefit of cranberry juice in preventing recurrent UTI. Conclusion: Because of the significant heterogeneity among published studies, there is no definitive proof that cranberry juice is effective or useless as UTI prophylaxis.

Prevention Of Ovarian And Endometrial Cancer By Combined Oral Contraceptives: A Demographics Study, Joanna S. Heywood
Prevention Of Ovarian And Endometrial Cancer By Combined Oral Contraceptives: A Demographics Study, Joanna S. Heywood
CMC Senior Theses
Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer with 54,870 cases occurring in the United States in 2015 and causing 10,170 deaths, an 18.5% mortality rate (Elit and Reade, 2015). Ovarian cancer, while less common, is much more fatal. In 2015 in the United States, 21,290 cases occurred and resulted in 14,180 deaths, a 66.6% mortality rate. This mortality rate makes ovarian cancer the fifth most deadly cancer for women in the United States, which is largely explained by ineffective screening strategies and limited treatment possibilities (Cramer, 2012). Thus, developing effective prevention strategies is especially important to saving the lives …
