Science And Scruples: Francois Magendie (1783-1855) And Sir Charles Bell (1774-1842), Clarence W. Olsen Jan 1949

Science And Scruples: Francois Magendie (1783-1855) And Sir Charles Bell (1774-1842), Clarence W. Olsen

Medical Arts and Sciences: A Scientific Journal of the College of Medical Evangelists

In the early part of the nineteenth century there began a scientific controversy that has never been finally settled and, in fairly close connection with this, an ethical controversy that still flares up at intervals to the present day. An anatomist in London and a physiologist in Paris each claimed priority in an important neurological discovery. The anatomist, whose father was a minister, introduced into the dispute scruples against inflicting pain; whereas the physiologist, whose father was a surgeon, was cited as a horrid example of the ruthless and sadistic experimenter on living animals.

The Chemical State Of The Calcium Reacting In The Coagulation Of Blood, Armand J. Quick, Mario Stefanini Nov 1948

The Chemical State Of The Calcium Reacting In The Coagulation Of Blood, Armand J. Quick, Mario Stefanini

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

1. The widely accepted theory that calcium participates in the coagulation mechanism in the form of Ca++ and acts as a catalyst is not in accord with several important experimental findings:

(a) The anticoagulant action of sodium oxalate is much slower than the precipitation of ionized calcium as the oxalate salt.

(b) Sodium citrate begins to depress prothrombin activity at a concentration at which ionized calcium is still present. The inability of tricalcium phosphate to adsorb prothrombin from citrated plasma indicates that citrate forms a complex with prothrombin and it is postulated that prothrombin is …

Intravenous Procaine During Thoracic Surgery, Forrest E. Leffingwell Oct 1948

Intravenous Procaine During Thoracic Surgery, Forrest E. Leffingwell

Medical Arts and Sciences: A Scientific Journal of the College of Medical Evangelists

Surgery on the heart and paracardial structures or traction on the hilus of the lung may initiate serious arrhythmias which can result in death if not promptly controlled. Procedures involving the pericardium are particularly apt to be followed by severe derangements of rhythm. Thus anesthesiology is faced with another challenge.

It is now evident that the intravenous administration of procaine has become a valuable addition to the armamentarium of the anesthesiologist in his endeavor to preserve the integrity of the thread of life while the surgeon carries out his heroic assignment without restrictions.

Quantitative Sugar Estimations In Pleural Fluid - An Aid To Diagnosis, John E. Peterson

Medical Arts and Sciences: A Scientific Journal of the College of Medical Evangelists

In a study of 33 cases of serous effusion it would appear that determination of the sugar content of the pleural fluid may provide an early clue to the etiologic diagnosis.

A Resume Of Intravenous Procaine Therapy, Fred B. Moor Oct 1948

A Resume Of Intravenous Procaine Therapy, Fred B. Moor

Medical Arts and Sciences: A Scientific Journal of the College of Medical Evangelists

Summary:

1. The intravenous injection of procaine hydrochloride for a variety of clinical conditions constitutes a surprising new chapter in therapeutics.

2. With adequate precautions as to dosage and rate of administration, procaine can be safely given by the intravenous route in concentrations of 0.1 to 1 per cent.

It has been used successfully for serum sickness, the pruritis of jaundice, trauma of soft tissues, bones and joints, in the prevention and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias during intrathoracic surgery, for the relief of pain in osteoarthritis, for the control of pain during the dressing of burns, for postoperative pain, and …

Recent speech surveys conducted in Box Elder County showed that approximately 17% of the elementary school children there had speech defects of such seriousness that they needed clinical attention.

A remedial speech program was organized and remedial speech training given at four schools in Box Elder County.

The purpose of this project was to study this remedial speech program, as it was in operation, in an effort to determine the feasibility and value of such a program.

An Investigation Into The Histories Of Theories And Treatment Of Vocal Registers In Training The Singing And Speaking Voice In Relation To The Recently Published Theories Of Douglas Stanley, Edward Burger Lyon Jan 1948

An Investigation Into The Histories Of Theories And Treatment Of Vocal Registers In Training The Singing And Speaking Voice In Relation To The Recently Published Theories Of Douglas Stanley, Edward Burger Lyon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The question, then, is not. "Should such a study impose limits upon itself?" Rather it is "How shall the boundaries be set?" On the part of the investigator, two considerations might well influence his choice of a specific area in the field of vocal research: (1) Is there a point upon which there exist confusion or, at least doubt, in the mind of the investigator? (2) Is the clearing up of this point of doubt or confusion sufficiently important to the investigator to justify his spending a year trying to solve the problem? In this case the writer has somewhat …
