Perspectives And Prospects In The Chemotherapy Of Gastrointestinal Cancer, William Regelson Jan 1967

Perspectives And Prospects In The Chemotherapy Of Gastrointestinal Cancer, William Regelson

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

5-Flourouracil (5-FU) is the best agent for the treatment of all gastrointestinal cancers but should be used with restraint, since severe toxicity does not guarantee increased response or survival time. Experimental work suggests that glucose enhances cellular uptake of 5-FU. Alkylating agents are definitely useful and occasionally produce long-term responses. Mitomycin C shows activity but is not available. There are reports of responses to methotrexate, vinca alkaloids, and mithramycin, but their place in the management of gastrointestinal cancer is not established. The usefulness of alkylating agents or 5-FU as adjuvants to surgery is not clear, but evidence is accumulating which …

Pharmacology Of Anti-Anginal Agents, Maurice Mcgregor Jan 1967

Pharmacology Of Anti-Anginal Agents, Maurice Mcgregor

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In conclusion I would like to stress that these observations do not constitute direct evidence of the mechanism whereby the nitrates relieve angina pectoris. It is probable that they are capable of causing some reduction of myocardial oxygen consumption. However, there is increasing indirect evidence which suggests that the site of action of these drugs is principally on the large coronary arteries. Their administration may thus relieve coronary spasm, if this ever causes angina, and more importantly will increase collateral flow into ischemic areas of myocardium when collateral channels have become enlarged. Drugs such as dipyridamole which seem to act …

Intracellular Ph Determination By Means Of Ph Glass Microelectrodes, Norman W. Carter Jan 1967

Intracellular Ph Determination By Means Of Ph Glass Microelectrodes, Norman W. Carter

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

A number of years ago I decided to attempt to measure the intracellular pH of skeletal muscle by a more direct method than those in current use, that is, by an electrode. I excluded all forms of pH electrodes except the glass electrode and then set up a certain number of characteristics or requirements that this electrode should have. First, the electrode should be insulated in such a manner that only the pH-sensitive portion is in the cell cytoplasm. Second, the reference side of the electrode group should also be within the cell, because the cell has a transmembrane potential; …

Traumatic Hyphema: A Review Of Experience At The Medical College Of Virginia During The Past Decade, Walter J. Geeraets, Ching-Hung Liu, Dupont Guerry Iii

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Hyphema (hemorrhage into the anterior chamber of the eye), as the result of blunt injury to the eye, carries a potential danger of visual loss if not properly treated. This review of cases seen in the MCV Hospitals over the last decade lists some of the complications and stresses some of the important factors in the management.

The Role Of The Physician In Family Planning, Howard C. Taylor Jr. Jan 1967

The Role Of The Physician In Family Planning, Howard C. Taylor Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, one can find many reasons for believing that family planning programs should in general be associated with maternity services and that educational efforts should be concentrated during the weeks of pregnancy and the puerperium. During these periods the women of an age and fertility most in need of family planning are easily detectable. They are for obvious reasons interested in the subject and the most susceptible to advice. The staff needed for this work is already partly available among the physicians, nurses, midwives, and social workers connected with maternity services. The system promises to introduce birth control in …

Diagnostic Ultrasonography, Joseph H. Holmes Jan 1967

Diagnostic Ultrasonography, Joseph H. Holmes

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

It was the development of radar and sonar during the last World War which made the ultrasonic techniques I am going to talk about possible. Following the War, Dr. K. T. Dussik had the idea that, if one directed ultrasonic waves into the body, one might obtain echoes reflected from tissue surfaces in the same way that the Navy received echo information reflected from the submarine's hull. When he did this, he did get reflected echoes from within the body, and this opened the door for other investigators to demonstrate how this echo information could be made useful in diagnostic …

Continuing Education For What?, George E. Miller Jan 1967

Continuing Education For What?, George E. Miller

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Continuing education should mean continuing self-education, not continuing instruction. If this desirable goal is to be accomplished, there must be movement away from the content model, which encourages dependence upon teachers, to a process model, which demands a significant measure of self-reliance--a shift away from preoccupation with courses and methods, toward an augmented concern for educational diagnosis and individualized therapy. It does not mean an immediate abandonment of present program forms, but it is likely to be accompanied by a slow erosion of the faith which presently supports them.

Oxygen Tension: Direct Observations On The Critical Level For The Brain, Frans F. Jӧbsis Jan 1967

Oxygen Tension: Direct Observations On The Critical Level For The Brain, Frans F. Jӧbsis

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In this lecture I want to address myself to the questions: What is the lowest oxygen tension compatible with adequate function, and what are the factors that set this limit? Much of the background to the material present here has been reviewed extensively in the not too distant past (Jӧbsis '64), and I will take the liberty of letting that article provide most of the detailed justification of my remarks today. [Includes discussion.]

A Guide To Good Lamb Marking, H E. Fels Jan 1967

A Guide To Good Lamb Marking, H E. Fels

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

LAMB marking is the most severe of the various ordeals that sheep are called upon to endure.

It is a series of surgical operations, each involving a risk of infection, and some involving risks of severe haemorrhage.

Growth rate is reduced to the same extent by rubber rings as by the knife.

Hydatid Disease In Western Australia, K J. Austen Jan 1967

Hydatid Disease In Western Australia, K J. Austen

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

BECAUSE hydatid disease is a disease of humans as well as animals every consideration must be given to its control and to the prevention of any possible increase in incidence.

The incidence of hydatids in Western Australia has not, in the past, been very high.

However, the great increase in sheep numbers which has taken place in recent years and which is expected to continue for many years to come, will produce a situation where it could be expected that the incidence of the disease will rise unless stock owners, particularly sheep owners, take appropriate steps to control the tapeworms …

The Effects Of Readership Selectivity On The Reading Of Controversial Material Dealing With The Reader's Personal Prejudices : A Test Of The Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance, John Marshall Tucker Jan 1967

The Effects Of Readership Selectivity On The Reading Of Controversial Material Dealing With The Reader's Personal Prejudices : A Test Of The Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance, John Marshall Tucker

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to test the theory of cognitive dissonance as it relates to a reader's selectivity in reading controversial material involving his personal prejudices or attitudes. Festinger states that forced or accidental exposure to new information which tends to increase dissonance will frequently result in misinterpretation and misperception of the new information by the individual thus exposed in an effort to avoid a dissonance increase. Therefore, cognitive dissonance theory would predict that a person's prejudiced attitude would negatively effect his reading comprehension on material which was disharmonious with his attitude. The dissonance situation examined here is …
