A Cephalometric Study Of Post-Retention Relapse In Mandibular Expansion Of Cuspids And Molars, Randall J. Schuler
A Cephalometric Study Of Post-Retention Relapse In Mandibular Expansion Of Cuspids And Molars, Randall J. Schuler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this research was to determine if the advancements of cephalometrics and the capacity of the computer to quantify skeletal relationships could help the orthodontist recognize those cases where arch length could be gained through buccal expansion with little risk of relapse. To determine the stability of orthodontic treatment changes, the mandibular arches of 72 patients were studied. The cases were treated by Drs. Bench and Ricketts and were selected on the basis that each case must include three complete sets of frontal and lateral headplates, before and after treatment, and a minimum of two years out of …

The Status And Administration Of Precision Drill Teams In Selected Utah Junior High Schools, Carol Wilson Larsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Data for this study was gathered by questionnaires completed by thirteen drill team directors, thirty-eight women physical education department heads at schools not having a drill team, fifty-six girls who were members of the precision drill team at their school and 416 girls who were not members of a precision drill team.
Drill team directors indicated strong feelings of success as to the organization and administration of their groups and also were positive as to the merits of precision drill teams in the junior high schools. The majority of the physical education department heads did not desire that a precision …

Informed Consent And Medical Experimentation, George H. Martin Jr.
Informed Consent And Medical Experimentation, George H. Martin Jr.
IUSTITIA
Certain biomedical technologies already or almost already with us "threaten to reduce the meaning of man and to degrade the human spirit in the very process of becoming technologically feasible, long before the final stage of deployment and widespread use has been reached." It is this threat that has prompted me to consider certain medical and legal problems associated broadly with the human experimentation process. I shall be examining the concept of "informed consent" to both experimental medical therapy and nontherapeutic scientific experimentation as a means of protecting man from the potential ravages of a zealous application of scientific advances …

A Correlation Study Of Selected Teeth By Circumferential Measurement, Steven W. Campbell
A Correlation Study Of Selected Teeth By Circumferential Measurement, Steven W. Campbell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A correlation was established among the circumferences of teeth in a given set. This is the first step in constructing a band numbering system so that the fitting of one band (the predictor tooth) would give you the band sizes for the remaining teeth in the set. This would make possible improved efficiency for the orthodontist during band selection.
Individual sets of teeth from impressions of patients starting orthodontic treatment were measured by the use of the dentometer. The upper second bicuspid was chosen as the predictor tooth after the correlation matrices were computed.
It was concluded that 48% of …

In Vivo Quantitation Of Adipose Tissue By Differential Absorptiometry Using Penetrating Isotopic Radiation, Luther E. Preuss, Frank B. Bolin, Claudius K. Bugenis
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The physical principles for determining tissue lipid content In vivo by selective radiation attenuation have been studied and are compared to other methods of body composition analysis. Two penetrating photon beams, each monoenergetic but of differing energies, are simultaneously passed through the low Z components of tissue and the relative beam absorption measured. A mathematical function incorporating the unabsorbed and absorbed photon beam intensities is applied to determine experimentally the relative proportion of fat and lean in the tissue. '"Cd is used as the radioactive source of both xrays and gamma radiation. Results of experiments on low 2 phantom material …

The Relationship Of Locus Of Control Of The Diabetic Patient And Compliance With Medical Regimen, Lois Daniel
The Relationship Of Locus Of Control Of The Diabetic Patient And Compliance With Medical Regimen, Lois Daniel
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The literature indicates that many diabetic patients do not adhere to their prescribed medical regimen and that there is a need to discover factors that stimulate compliant behavior. It has been proposed that the patient's decision to accept or reject treatment has many determinants. This study explored the effect of one such determinant, the locus of control (the source of the stimulus for a person's behavior). It was hypothesized that a person with an internal locus (one who believes his actions influence his future) would be more likely to comply with a medical regimen than one with an external locus …
Daily Temperature Rhythm In Hospitalized Female Patients, Phyllis L. Mcelmurry
Daily Temperature Rhythm In Hospitalized Female Patients, Phyllis L. Mcelmurry
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The study was designed to determine the hour when temperature peaks occur in adult hospitalized females, and to find if factors such as age and natural or surgical menopause with replacement therapy affect the thermal circadian cycle. Previous studies indicated that the temperature peak occurs in afternoon or early evening, but there were no investigations to determine if aging, sex, or menopause affects the temperature cycle.
The sample included 62 female patients, 29 between 21 and 62 years of age, and 33 between 65 and 90 years. Each subject admitted to the study was screened against fifteen qualifying criteria. Some …
A Post-Retention Study Of The Stability Of Lower Incisors Evaluated Cephalometrically, Robert W. Allen
A Post-Retention Study Of The Stability Of Lower Incisors Evaluated Cephalometrically, Robert W. Allen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this research was to determine if forward movement of the lower incisor in a horizontal plane during active treatment affected the post-retention stability. The post-active treatment position of the lower incisor in relation to APo plane, NB plane and mandibular plane was also studied to determine if it affected the post-retention stability.
To determine where the lower incisors were moved during treatment, the beginning cephalometric tracings were superimposed over the end of active treatment tracings on the Corpus Axis at Supra-Pogonion. The amount of change in the incisal edge was measured to the nearest millimeter on a …

Trauma is now a major medical problem. Accidental injuries constitute the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, and the primary cause of death below the age of 37. The costs of immediate medical and surgical care, prolonged hospitalization, and lost productivity amount to several billions of dollars annually.
Practical Office Therapy Of Hypertension, A. Jarrell Paper
Practical Office Therapy Of Hypertension, A. Jarrell Paper
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Because of the sheer number of patients and because of their location, the community practitioner is in a position to deal with the vast majority of problems that occur in hypertension. The trend in hypertension therapy is toward individualizing the work-up of the hypertensive patient, which with many patients can be very simple. When emphasizing aspects of practical office care of the hypertensive, one of the first questions that comes to mind is: what exactly is the blood pressure? There is not any one universally accepted definition of hypertension. Until such a one is adopted, we have put together a …
Diagnostic Use Of Radionuclides In Diseases Of The Thyroid, Alton R. Sharpe Jr.
Diagnostic Use Of Radionuclides In Diseases Of The Thyroid, Alton R. Sharpe Jr.
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Since the introduction of radionuclides into clinical medicine, a number of specific tests have been designed to test thyroid function and to diagnose disease of the thyroid gland. These studies can be broadly grouped into in vivo and in vitro studies. Using 131I and 125I , tests have been designed to measure thyroid function at the hypothalamic, pituitary, or thyroid level and at the peripheral level by radioimmunoassay or radioassay of circulating thyroid hormones. The following schema of testing may be used to assess thyroid function.
Interpretation Of Cerebral Dynamic Perfusion Studies, Frank H. Deland
Interpretation Of Cerebral Dynamic Perfusion Studies, Frank H. Deland
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
As stated earlier, increased, decreased, or no change in perfusion does contribute to the differential evidence in the diagnosis of cerebral lesions. For example, a 40-year-old man developed right-sided symptoms over a period of several months. The static images revealed an area of increased activity of the left cerebral hemisphere, limited to the cortex, and correlated with the configuration of the rolandic branch of the left-middle cerebral artery. From the static images the lesions was interpreted as a possible arteriovenous malformation, or as a lesser possibility, a progressive stroke. The dynamic study demonstrated early concentration of radioactivity in the correct …
Pitfalls And Artifacts In Nuclear Imaging Studies, Leonard M. Freeman
Pitfalls And Artifacts In Nuclear Imaging Studies, Leonard M. Freeman
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In interpreting scintillation images, one often is confronted with a variety of deviations from the typically normal study that need not represent definite pathology. Apart from normal anatomic variants in the position, shape, or configuration of an organ, one must also be prepared to appreciate alterations due to the radiodiagnostic agent employed and aberrations caused by faulty or improperly used instruments. Additionally, physiologic and/or functional changes associated with specific organ studies have provided a major source of error in routine image interpretation. It is the purpose of this article to acquaint (or reacquaint, as the case may be) the reader …

Radical Hysterectomy For Carcinoma Of The Cervix, John J. Mikuta
Radical Hysterectomy For Carcinoma Of The Cervix, John J. Mikuta
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Radical hysterectomy refers to the removal of the uterus and cervix and, in addition, to the removal of the upper one-half to one-third of the vagina, the parametria and the pelvic lymph nodes. This operation, which is commonly called the Wertheim operation, was actually first described by Clark in the United States and Ries in Germany. Wertheim's original operation for carcinoma of the cervix consisted only of a partial parametrial removal and removal of the upper one-third of the vagina. It did not include pelvic lymphadenectomy or the removal of the lateral portions of the parametria.

The pig was a forest-dwelling animal from the beginning of its history. In some parts of the world it has been domesticated for at least 7000 years. The European breeds of domestic swine were derived from the local wild pig, Sus scrofa. Herds ranged in pastures and forests and kept indoors only for fattening. The breeds in the Far East were derived from another wild pig, Sus vittatus, a smaller animal with shorter legs and a higher reproductive ability (Mohr 1960; Zeuner 1963). The two types interbred readily. The modem breeds of pig evolved from different crossings between the two …
