Cephalometric Objectives For The Maxillary Central Incisor, John Mickey Damerell
Cephalometric Objectives For The Maxillary Central Incisor, John Mickey Damerell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A cephalometric study was conducted to determine the ideal inclination of the maxillary central incisor for various facial patterns. Selected measurements were made on lateral headplate tracings of three samples: ideal, random and Class III malocclusions. Statistical analysis of data included means, standard deviations, simple correlations and stepwise regressions.
The Frankfort plane was found to be the most reliable reference plane when measuring the inclination of the maxillary central incisor. The maxillary central incisor inclination was found to be dependent upon the lower incisor position and inclination, chin position and the anterior cranial base inclination. A formula was produced to …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The major purpose of the first volume of an intended three-volume series by Samuel Yochelson and Stanton E. Samenow (1976) is to provide evidence that understanding the thought processes of chronic criminals provides the major key to understanding criminal behavior. Volumes II and III will deal, respectively, with the techniques of therapy developed for the analysis and correction of criminal thought patterns, and with the special problems of therapy with criminals who are chronic drug users. This review of Volume I is divided into three parts, the first being a review of the content and major points of the book, …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
In a review of 68 patients with dissecting thoracic aorta aneurysm (DTAA), eight patients (11.7%) were found to have painless dissection. Three of the eight patients presented with gross aortic insufficiency (Al). Angiography on a fourth patient, who had severe hypertension, showed Type III DTAA. Three other patients had either dilatation of the ascending aorta or a possible mediastinal mass, according to chest roentgenograms. One patient received treatment for suspected myocardial infarction with cardiogenic shock. A high index of suspicion in patients with unexplained Al, severe hypertension and a mediastinal mass or dilatation of the ascending aorta, coupled with the …

A Comparison Of A Step-By-Step Versus An All-In-One Approach In Teaching Plaque Control, Charles R. Woofter
A Comparison Of A Step-By-Step Versus An All-In-One Approach In Teaching Plaque Control, Charles R. Woofter
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Using plaque scores as the measurement criterion, two different methods of teaching plaque control skills were tested. Based on initial plaque scores, 25 patients with periodontal disease were paired and divided into two groups: a "step-by-step" and "all-in-one" group. The subjects of both groups were given four one-half hour appointments of instruction. Members of the "step-by-step" group were taught in three successive appointments a horizontal scrub toothbrushing method, how to floss and how to use the Perio Aid. All members of the "all-in-one" group were taught how to use all three oral hygiene instruments at the first appointment. No additional …

A Comparative Analysis Of Tests For Central Auditory Function And Tests For Auditory Processing, Lynnee C. Luckett
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether there was a relationship between the results obtained from tests of auditory language performance and those obtained from tests of central auditory performance. The performances of ten learning disabled children were compared with the performances of ten normal achievers on the six auditory language subtests of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities and the staggered spondaic word test and Willeford's tests of central auditory processing abilities. The two groups were matched according to sex, age, and socioeconomic status. Only children having normal peripheral hearing and an IQ within normal range …
Inter- And Intra-Judge Reliability Of Four Articulation Tests, Lydia Pearl Evans
Inter- And Intra-Judge Reliability Of Four Articulation Tests, Lydia Pearl Evans
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
Assessment of articulatory productions is usually accomplished with picture stimuli to elicit responses from young subjects. The levels of scoring phonemes on articulation tests are two-way (correct/incorrect), four-way (correct, distortion, substitution and omission) or by narrow phonetic transcription. The stimuli presented range from scoring one phoneme in a one word response (Templin Darley Test of Articulation, 1960) to scoring one phoneme in different contexts across word boundaries (McDonald Deep Test of Articulation, 1964) to scoring several phonemes in a one word response (Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation, 1969) to scoring several phonemes as the subject repeats a story to the examiner …
Insulin Treatment Of Diabetes Mellitus, H. St. George Tucker
Insulin Treatment Of Diabetes Mellitus, H. St. George Tucker
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In summary, I believe in aiming for the best possible control for each patient through an empirical approach which seeks to arrive at the best schedule for the individual patient. We want especially tight control for the pregnant diabetic, and for this patient it is likely that multiple insulin injections are needed. If further experience confirms the benefits of multiple injections for juvenile patients, this type of treatment may also be indicated for these patients.
Indications For Antenatal Genetic Diagnosis, Fay Redwine, Robert E. Petres
Indications For Antenatal Genetic Diagnosis, Fay Redwine, Robert E. Petres
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The future of antenatal genetic diagnosis is an exciting one. Recent advances include the application of chromosal banding techniques to identify subtle abnormalities and rearrangements; ultrasonography, using high resolution gray scale equipment to permit delineation of fetal soft tissue and skeletal anomalies; and fetoscopy, using a small fiberoptic instrument to view the fetus directly and observe its development. With these advances in technology, it should be possible to enable even more women at high risk for genetically diseased offspring to bear healthy children.

Recent Advances In Cytogenetic Technology For Antenatal Genetic Testing, Judith A. Brown, Anna Carr, Elizabeth S. Cooper, Deborah W. Heritage
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The examination of human chromosomes has been a part of the physician’s laboratory armamentarium since the correct diploid number of human chromosomes was established and a method was developed for the in vitro growth of peripheral blood leukocytes to yield metaphase chromosomes. The discovery that on ultraviolet microscopy (UV), metaphase chromosomes stained with fluorochrome dyes displayed a characteristic pattern of bright and dull bands unique for a given pair of homologous chromosomes, was a major technological breakthrough in human cytogenetics; for the first time, every chromosome in the karyotype could be unequivocally identified. Although the short storage life of fluorochrome-stained …

Immunology And Disease Of The Kidney, William F. Falls Jr.
Immunology And Disease Of The Kidney, William F. Falls Jr.
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The emphasis of this paper is the review of several aspects of renal disease which have immunologic overtones and clinical relevance. The pathogenesis of several subtypes of glomerulonephritis will be discussed, the immunologic implications of amyloidosis will be noted, and the relation between immune mechanisms and tubulointerstitial disease will be mentioned. The discussion will then be completed by an analysis of the prognosis of the aforementioned renal disease, and by an attempt to place contemporary therapeutic modalities in a proper perspective.
The Search For Optimal Management Of Head Injury, J. Douglas Miller
The Search For Optimal Management Of Head Injury, J. Douglas Miller
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Head injuries of sufficient severity to bring the patient to a hospital occur in more than one per hundred of the population every year. The toll in death and disability is staggering: the majority of patients are young wage-earners with families so that the total socio-economic burden can hardly be guessed at. Much emphasis is laid on the concept that physical disruption of neurons in the brain is not a reversible process and that regeneration within the nervous system to the point of functional recovery does not occur; however, this rather dismal view of head injury is at variance with …

Somatostatin: Diverse Physiological Roles And Therapeutic Implications, Gordon C. Weir, S. Bonner Weir
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In its brief lifetime as a known peptide, somatostatin has provided a truly remarkable story filled with surprising developments from unexpected quarters. The foundation was set in 1969, when Krulich and McCann reported that fractions of a crude hypothalamic extract inhibited the secretion of growth hormone. In 1973, Guillemin's laboratory reported the sequence and synthesis of a fourteen amino acid peptide with the same inhibitory effect. It occurs in both a cyclic and linear form, each displaying equal biological activity. Somatostatin was assigned as its name, but it is also commonly referred to as growth hormone release inhibitory factor (GHRIF) …
Cancer: The Great Challenge For Immunology, Gerald Goldstein
Cancer: The Great Challenge For Immunology, Gerald Goldstein
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The existence of immunity to cancer was postulated by the eminent scientists who helped to establish the discipline of immunology. In 1907 Clowes suggested that human resistance to cancer resulted from what we today call “immune surveillance.” During the ensuing 70 years the results obtained from experimental animal cancers and human cancers have greatly influenced the palatability of tumor-immunity theories. Early optimism that immunity to cancer could be specifically induced waned and almost disappeared when it was demonstrated that the rejection of cancer transplants resulted from transplantation immunity and not tumor immunity. A sustained wave of enthusiasm for immunity to …

A Diagnostic Approach To Acute Headache, Alan B. Grindal
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Headache is one of the most common symptomatic ailments encountered by the physician. According to one estimate, headache constitutes the major complaint in more than 50% of patients seen in office practice. This figure refers to patients with chronic recurring headache, many of whom are seen electively when they are asymptomatic, and may not accurately reflect the frequency with which patients present, during the acute phase, complaining of head pain. The term acute headache refers to those episodes of cephalgia which lead the patient to seek immediate medical care.
