A Preliminary Evaluation Of Azathioprine (Imuran®) In The Treatment Of Multiple Sclerosis, William G. Tucker, K. H. Kapphahn Jun 1969

A Preliminary Evaluation Of Azathioprine (Imuran®) In The Treatment Of Multiple Sclerosis, William G. Tucker, K. H. Kapphahn

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A theoretical approach to the unknown etiology of multiple sclerosis is presented in this preliminary study which reports the results of empiric treatment with azathioprine. Imuran® therapy produced stabilization of the disease, neurological improvement, and no progress of neurological dysfunction or loss of any regained function. Evidence points toward a viral-induced immunological defect. Abnormal gamma globulins found in the cerebral spinal fluid suggest an immunological etiology.

Isotope Cisternography — Risa®, J. L. Fenton, W. R. Eyler, L. A. Dusault, G. M. Griser, F. C. Stebner

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Several cases are presented which illustrate the indications and results of a relatively new procedure of intrathecal injection of radioiodinated human seruin albumin I 131 to demonstrate cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. This procedure has been used in conjunction with pneumoencephalography in the diagnosis of communicating hydrocephalus. A proper dose as well as adequate volume are necessary to obtain diagnostic scans.

The Effect Of Selected Nurse-Patient Contacts On The Attendance Of Non-Private Patients At Preparation For Childbirth Classes, Judith A. Hart Jun 1969

The Effect Of Selected Nurse-Patient Contacts On The Attendance Of Non-Private Patients At Preparation For Childbirth Classes, Judith A. Hart

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether selected nurse-patient contacts effected the attendance of non-private patients at Preparation for Childbirth classes. During the data collection period only six of the eight patients who met the criteria for this study were available. Each of the six patients was reached by at least one of the three types of nurse-patient contacts-- a letter of invitation to the Preparation for Childbirth classes, weekly contacts with the patients at the classes and three home visits to each patient. Tools used to collect data for this study were a personal information questionnaire, home …

A Historical Study Of The Nursing Care Of The Newborn Infant In The Hospital Nursery, Synnove Wasli

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This was a historical study of past ideas, beliefs, and practices in the nursing care of the normal newborn infant in the hospital nursery. The study covered the years 1930 to 1965 and was divided into four cross sections, namely, 1930 to 1935, 1940 to 1945, 1950 to 1955, and 1960 to 1965.

The primary sources used in this study consisted of one hundred infant medical records which were made available by a 382-bed, private, general hospital located in a Los Angeles suburb. One procedure manual used in this hospital during the years 1944-1955 qualified as a primary source. Personal …

Histopathological Response Of The Human Tooth To An Intrapulpal Pin Implantation, Raymond W. Dolph Jun 1969

Histopathological Response Of The Human Tooth To An Intrapulpal Pin Implantation, Raymond W. Dolph

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This investigation was designed to serve as a research project directed toward the study of histopathological response of human teeth to the intentional implantation of threaded, stainless steel, gold plated pins into the vital pulp.

Pins of several types are currently used in several aspects of restorative and periodontal dentistry. In some cases there may be unintentional perforation of the dental pulp. In other cases it may be advantageous to purposely perforate the pulp for added retention. The purpose of this research is to help determine the reaction, possibilities, and prognosis of such technique.

Human teeth selected for experimental and …

Analgesic Effectiveness As Measured By A New Algesiometer, J. Raymond Wahlen Jun 1969

Analgesic Effectiveness As Measured By A New Algesiometer, J. Raymond Wahlen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A method of measuring the effectiveness of analgesics using a new instrument, known as the Algesiometer,* is described. The instrument, utilizing an electrical stimulus, produced an experimental pain when attached to the skin over the mid shaft of the tibia. The patient, who was experiencing a pathological pain, gradually increased the experimental stimulus, by turning a control rheostat, until it was equal in intensity to the pathological, or clinical, pain. The intensity of the stimulus was calculated in milliwatts and consisted of a rectangular wave pulsating direct current of approximately one millisecond duration and an interval of nineteen milliseconds.

Some Aspects Of Cranial Bone Growth In The Puberal Macaca Mulatta Monkey: As Evidenced By Metallic Implants And Cephalometric Roentgenography And The Application Of A Geological Lapidary Technique For The Semi-Serial Thin Sectioning Of Undecalcified Bone, Lee Eugene Olsen Jun 1969

Some Aspects Of Cranial Bone Growth In The Puberal Macaca Mulatta Monkey: As Evidenced By Metallic Implants And Cephalometric Roentgenography And The Application Of A Geological Lapidary Technique For The Semi-Serial Thin Sectioning Of Undecalcified Bone, Lee Eugene Olsen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate cranial and facial bone growth in the puberal Macaca mulatta monkey over a six month period utilizing the methods of metallic implantation combined with serial cephalometric roentgenography and a bichromatic vital staining method.

The employment of the vital stains, alizarin Red S and anthracene blue, over the six month period of the study, failed to stain the actively growing bone as evidenced by gross and microscopic analysis of the undecalcified bone preparations.

Interimplant measurements were made across certain bone sutures and the following results were obtained: The zygomaticotemporal sutures showed marked growth …

Correlation Of The Actual Position Of The Root Canal Filling In Human Teeth To Its Apparent Location On The Radiograph, Dominic J. Niccoli Jun 1969

Correlation Of The Actual Position Of The Root Canal Filling In Human Teeth To Its Apparent Location On The Radiograph, Dominic J. Niccoli

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Human teeth mounted in individual plaster blocks were studied to determine the actual location of the root canal filling when it appears to be exactly at the radiographic apex. The original sample consisted of 109 teeth treated during endodontic technique class by junior dental students at Loma Linda University. In the most ideal manner possible, these teeth were radiographed on a flat surface with the x-ray tube perpendicular to the film and blocked tooth.

Five dentists examined the radiographs, and each one independently listed the canals he judged filled exactly to the radiographic apex. The investigator sorted out the choices …

A Comparison Between Differences Of Body-Image And Self-Concept For Pre- And Post-Treatment Orthodontic Patients, Roy D. Atkin Jun 1969

A Comparison Between Differences Of Body-Image And Self-Concept For Pre- And Post-Treatment Orthodontic Patients, Roy D. Atkin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The primary objective of this study was to quantitatively address the three following questions:

  1. Does orthodontic treatment when administered to the adolescent patient produce changes in his or her body-image and self-concept?

  2. In which areas of the body does the patient experience changes in body image after orthodontic treatment?

  3. What significance or value does the patient place on orthodontic treatment relative to changes in the subject's life?

In seeking answers to the above questions, a questionnaire was given to a group of 138 male and female orthodontic patients.

Results of the study indicate that (1) total body-image and self-concept are …

Verbal Accessibility And Authoritarian Family Ideology: A Study Of 50 Graduate Social Work Students And Their Spouses, Linda Louise Metz May 1969

Verbal Accessibility And Authoritarian Family Ideology: A Study Of 50 Graduate Social Work Students And Their Spouses, Linda Louise Metz

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is the fourth in a series of empirical investigations concerned with symbolic interaction in marriage. Its basic assumption is that personal predispositions of marital partners as well as the social context of their marriage influences marital intimacy particularly the partner's readiness to communicate verbally with each other about important attitudes and feelings.

Fifty married graduate students attending Portland State University School of Social Work and their spouses comprised the sample. The subjects responded to three instruments: (1) a personality scale (Authoritarian Family Ideology – AFI) developed by Jane Loevinger, (2) a measure of verbal accessibility (VA), and (3) …

The Differential Effects Of Unilateral Versus Bilateral Cerebral Lesions On Performances Involving Comparable Visual And Auditory Tasks, Michael G. Johnson May 1969

The Differential Effects Of Unilateral Versus Bilateral Cerebral Lesions On Performances Involving Comparable Visual And Auditory Tasks, Michael G. Johnson

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

The present research was directed toward gaining a clearer understanding of the relationships between the location of brain injury and relative auditory and visual input abilities of adults by submitting selected subjects to comparable procedures requiring the auditory and the visual input of stimuli. Two tests, the Geometric Figures Test (GFT) and the Token Test (TT), were developed as a means of obtaining measures of auditory input ability and visual input ability. Each test contains separate auditory and visual batteries. The two batteries of each test are similar in all respects except for the mode of input used for each …

Sjögren's Syndrome In Childhood: Report Of A Case, Howard Duncan, Bruce N. Epker, Gerald M. Sheldon

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This report documents a rare case of Sjögren's Syndrome which began in a child with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at the age 10 years, followed by the symptoms of xerostomia with intermittent salivary gland swelling 15 months later. By age 12 the patient had developed keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Variations in the intensity of each component of Sjögren's syndrome were noted to be independent of each other.

The Role Of Operations Research In A University Hospital: A Review And Bibliography, S. J. Kilpatrick Jr. Jan 1969

The Role Of Operations Research In A University Hospital: A Review And Bibliography, S. J. Kilpatrick Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In the 1968 Annual Report of the Medical College of Virginia (Bulletin, 1968, pp8,18) the shortage of trained medical personnel is stressed as a serious problem in the care of the sick. As a result of this personnel shortage, approximately 100 beds have recently been closed in the University Hospital. This underlies the need for large medical centers to use O.R. techniques in developing more efficient use of existing medical personnel and in seeking cost reductions while increasing the quality and coverage of medical care. When the medical center is a component of an urban university, both urban and medical …

Perspectives In The Behavioral Sciences, Douglas D. Bond Jan 1969

Perspectives In The Behavioral Sciences, Douglas D. Bond

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

It is clear at this moment that we have two major thrusts. The first is the unlocking of the biological secrets surrounding the potential for development and the fixing of learned material in the biological matrix. The second is the careful examination of the culture that will be learned. Here, not only every social scientist but every citizen need be concerned. The present emphasis upon the importance of culture can hardly be exaggerated unless it crowds out our interest in the biological. Man remains an enigma; reason, a personal control of prejudice, and a continuing spirit of disciplined inquiry are …

Whom, Why And How To Refer, Zigmond M. Lebensohn Jan 1969

Whom, Why And How To Refer, Zigmond M. Lebensohn

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

When a medical practitioner decides that the time has come to refer his patient to a specialist, certain psychological problems arise which may, at times, interfere with the smooth accomplishment of the referral. These problems can and do occur daily in medical practice, and it often makes little difference whether the specialist is a thoracic surgeon, a neurosurgeon or a psychiatrist. Referrals create certain anxieties and fears in the mind of the patient. Some of these anxieties are common to all referrals. The patient asks himself, "What's going on? What does the doctor think I really have? How serious is …

Laboratory And Clinical Studies Of Cardiac Transplantation, Richard R. Lower, V. Eric Kemp, Walter H. Graham, David H. Sewell, Hermes A. Kontos, George M. Williams

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Cardiac transplantation was carried out on four patients at the Medical College of Virginia between May and October of 1968, in an effort to salvage them from the terminal stages of otherwise uncorrectable heart disease. Despite a strikingly good early recovery from operation in each case, three of the patients died of acute homograft rejection in one to three weeks; our second case is living and well, ten months after operation, and is at this writing the world's third longest survivor. The world experience to June of 1969 includes about 130 cardiac transplants. Of the first 100 patients operated on …
