Sensory Stimulation To Influence Body Awareness In The Adult Hemiplegic Patient, Sue Carol Bradley Jan 1971

Sensory Stimulation To Influence Body Awareness In The Adult Hemiplegic Patient, Sue Carol Bradley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An experimental study was conducted in four convalescent facilities using fourteen CVA patients with body scheme disturbances. The study was done to test the hypothesis that the experimental technique of light touch sensory stimulation as supplied by fast brushing to the skin dermatomes C 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the affected arms would increase the scores of the subjects in the experimental group.

Patients were assigned via a random process to the experimental or control groups if, upon taking the MacDonald Test of Body Scheme, they obtained a score of 39 or below. Subjects in the experimental group received …

Depression And Uncooperativeness In Public Health Patients, P. Sherrill Baugher, Nancy Lynn Swan Jan 1971

Depression And Uncooperativeness In Public Health Patients, P. Sherrill Baugher, Nancy Lynn Swan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether uncooperative behavior and a quantitative measurement of depression exist in the same patient in a public health nurse's caseload. Seven full-time public health nurses were randomly selected from the San Bernardino Public Health Department staff. They reviewed their caseloads and selected all the patients who met the general criteria.

Patients were then classified as cooperative or uncooperative based on the following specific criteria: (1) gives unreliable information, (2) uses the nurse as a "buffer" between helping agencies, (3) demands immediate gratification of requests in a stressful situation, (4) makes only token …

Influence Of Hospital Communication On Health Supervision Of High-Risk Infants, Alda L. Forte Jan 1971

Influence Of Hospital Communication On Health Supervision Of High-Risk Infants, Alda L. Forte

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study was conducted to explore the extent to which communication about high-risk infants identified prior to hospital discharge, influences the public health nursing supervision to these infants during the neonatal period. A high-risk infant was defined as one that stands a greater than average chance of developing neonatal, life threatening disease or sequellae (physical, intellectual, or social handicap) due usually to maternal health or social factors, infant factors such as length of gestation, birth trauma, or complications at birth. The hypothesis tested was that when high-risk infants are identified prior to hospital discharge and this information communicated on the …

Non-Metric Scaling Of Loudness, Alan M. Richards Jan 1971

Non-Metric Scaling Of Loudness, Alan M. Richards

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Determination of loudness scales for 1000 Hz stimuli by conventional ratio scaling methods have yielded loudness functions which grow as approximately the 0.54 power of sound pressure. Thus, two-fold loudness differences are equivalent to approximately 10 dB across the auditory continuum. The unidimensional representation of loudness ss a power function of sound intensity implies that if A is twice as loud as B, which, in turn, is twice as loud C, the A will be four times as loud as C. In order to test this implication across the auditory continuum loudness ratio estimates were obtained from four 7x7 matrices …

An Exploratory Study To Determine The Emotional Needs Of Terminally Ill Patients, June Hudnall Turnage Jan 1971

An Exploratory Study To Determine The Emotional Needs Of Terminally Ill Patients, June Hudnall Turnage

Theses and Dissertations

The problem to be investigated is: What are the emotional needs of patients, who are approaching death, as revealed by the patients themselves? The review of literature pointed out that almost all the data published about the dying patient were the thoughts of those around him rather than his own thoughts. Since the patient is our concern, it would seem logical to ask him what his needs are.

Nurses recognize as one of their responsibilities of assisting a patient toward a peaceful death when curative goals are beyond grasp. If the patient dies and his needs are not met, or …

Differential Effects Of Various Language Sampling Procedures On Children's Verbal Output, Wanda G. Webb

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether differences exist among four dlfferent language sampling procedures as to measures of communicative competence. Specifically, three questions were posed:

  1. Do statistically significant differences exist among obtained LCI scores for the following procedures for evoking child language samples: (1) Toys, (2) Verbal Directives, (3) Child-generated Pictures, and (4) Radio Telemetry.
  2. If differences exist, are they manifested in: (1) Noun Phrase One, (2) Verb Phrase One, (3) Noun Phrase Two.
  3. What is the frequency of occurrence of the obtained grammatical structures for the sampling procedure yielding the highest LCI scores?

PROCEDURE. Four language …

A Retrospective Study Of Drug Interactions And Their Clinical Significance In 100 Hospitalized Patients, Michael Ray Alexander Jan 1971

A Retrospective Study Of Drug Interactions And Their Clinical Significance In 100 Hospitalized Patients, Michael Ray Alexander

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Within the past several years, a great deal of attention has been focused on the phenomena of drug-drug interactions and their importance in the therapeutic regimen of patients for whom multiple therapeutic agents might be indicated. The rather sudden concern for this aspect of medical and pharmaceutical practice is evidenced by the proliferation of literature devoted to the topic for both professions. While iatrogenic disease has long been recognized as one of the hazards inherent in prescribing practices, only isolated reports of specific interactions were found until recently. Although it cannot be said with certainty when the first interaction of …

Activity Analysis Of Personnel On Patient Trayline Assembly, June Bishop Jan 1971

Activity Analysis Of Personnel On Patient Trayline Assembly, June Bishop

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The systems approach in food service administration is the initial step in analyzing current procedures to determine the effectiveness of resource utilization. Analysis begins with observation of a system to provide possible explanations of the system behavior.

The purpose of this research was to determine through work sampling the proportion of both productive and nonproductive labor time of operators on the tray assembly, the labor time and labor cost required in each position and for each meal, and to test the hypothesis that there was no significant difference between the productivity index (trays per minute) during Phase A and Phase …

A Study Of The Effects Of The Concepts “Same” And “Different” Upon The Speech Sound Discrimination Test Performances Of Children Of Various Ages, Barbara Beving Jan 1971

A Study Of The Effects Of The Concepts “Same” And “Different” Upon The Speech Sound Discrimination Test Performances Of Children Of Various Ages, Barbara Beving

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Training in speech sound discrimination may be an important part of some speech therapy and language development programs. In order to determine the nature of the training required, it is necessary to evaluate an individual's ability to discriminate between speech sounds. A variety of tests have been designed for this purpose. A review of the tests indicates that in one type of test the responses are based on the concepts "same" and "different". Recent studies suggest that the ability of an individual to perform at these tests may be affected by the use of the concepts. This study explored the …

It was hypothesized that persons exhibiting overt secondary symptoms of stuttering would demonstrate a visual field preference different from an age-matched group of fluent speakers who have no personal or familial history of stuttering.

A Study Of Personality Problems And Vocal Nodules In Children, William Lee Glassell Jan 1971

A Study Of Personality Problems And Vocal Nodules In Children, William Lee Glassell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The investigator found several children with vocal nodules in the schools he served. A review of the literature revealed that vocal abuse is the commonly considered etiology of vocal nodules. Vocal abuse did not fit several of the children who tended to be quiet and withdrawn. A further review of the literature was instituted in an attempt to find some feature of commonality between quiet children and noisy children which could explain why quiet children develop vocal nodules. Several authors discussed functional voice disorders as the result of personality problems. Few, however, related their conclusions directly to vocal nodules. The …
