Root Exposure And Its Effect On The Fluid Movement Within The Tooth, William J. Busch Aug 1971

Root Exposure And Its Effect On The Fluid Movement Within The Tooth, William J. Busch

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study examined the fluid movement in dentin associated with the exposure of the root surface for varying periods of time ranging from 75 minutes to 30 days. Eight kittens received experimental defects on the roots of the canines. Just prior to sacrifice a fluorescing dye was injected intraperitoneally to make the fluid within the dentin visible under ultraviolet light. Frozen ground sections were prepared and examined. The results showed that the exposed side of the root had a reduced amount of fluid fluorescence when compared to the opposite side of the tooth which had an intact root surface. The …

Implications Of An Oral-Gestural Training Program In The Acquisition Of Speechreading Skills, Mary Lu Wood Jul 1971

Implications Of An Oral-Gestural Training Program In The Acquisition Of Speechreading Skills, Mary Lu Wood

Dissertations and Theses

In order for the hearing handicapped child to derive maximum benefit of language acquisition through maturation, a method of receptive communication is essential at the earliest age possible. It is felt that speechreading is this method. The need for a method of training speechreading cues to prelingual, aurally handicapped children is based on the fact that most visual speechreading methods require the use of language. If speechreading can be regarded as a learning process involving the discrimination of visual cues that maybe disassociated from language expression then training the child to discriminate various facial expressions may actually enhance speech-reading ability. …

The Development Of A Basketball Battery For Middle School Male Students, Robert Chappell Jul 1971

The Development Of A Basketball Battery For Middle School Male Students, Robert Chappell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

There has always been a great deal of interest in the measurement of playing ability in team games and many researchers concerned with physical education have made efforts to measure individual aspects of games in relation to the total game situation. However, any objective measurement of skill in a team game will present difficulties, for in many instances the final battery of tests bears little resemblance to the game situation. Games are usually broken down into a number of component parts for the purpose of testing, but the sum of these parts seldom adds up to the total game. Tests …

The Effect Of Labeling Disfluencies As 'Stuttering' And Contingent And Yoked "Wrong" On The Disfluencies Of Normal Speakers, Dennis Ray Staines

Dissertations and Theses

A labeling variable suggested by Wendell Johnson's "diagnosogenic" theory of the onset of stuttering was included in this study of the disfluencies of normal speaking college students in order to explore further the hypothetical relationship between normal disfluency and the onset of stuttering. A total of 60 Ss were randomly assigned to the following groups, each containing 10 Ss: I. Labeling Chastisement plus Contingent "wrong;" II. Labeling Chastisement plus Yoked (non-contingent) "wrong;" III. Labeling Chastisement - No "wrong;" IV. No Labeling Chastisement Contingent "wrong;" V. No Labeling Chastisement - Yoked "wrong;" VI. Gastrocolic And Duodenocolic Fistulas: An Experimental Study, Joseph L. Ponka, A. Karim Shaalan, P. C. Pesaros

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

In an experimental study of gastrocolic and duodenocolic fistulas, it was clearly seen in 10 animals that duodenocolic fistulas result in the most serious loss of nutrition. Death from starvation occurred in all 42 animals in 30 days. Gastrocolic fistulas similarly resulted in weight loss and death of the animals in an average of 42 days. Lengthy fistulas between the stomach and colon caused no obvious disturbances in the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract. The significant microscopic changes included destruction of the mucous membrane and a decrease in size of the villi. The other noteworthy observation was that fistulous aggregations …

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale Jun 1971

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The various methods for diagnosis of gonorrhea are reviewed. Gram-stained smear of urethral exudate in the mate is appropriate, but for the female emphasis is placed on the use of culture on Thayer-Martin medium. Currently effective modalities of treatment are detailed, pointing out that higher doses of antibiotics are generally required for females with pelvic inflammatory disease than for males with acute gonococcal urethritis. The necessity for follow-up is also discussed.

An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva Jun 1971

An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Cytological detail is well demonstrated in an improved method of staining aspirated bone marrow sections embedded in paraffin. The tinctorial patterns of the stain resemble some of its predecessors; thus, cell counting and identification involve little difficulty. The method has proven reliable, reproducible and a valuable addition in the diagnosis of bone marrow disorders. It is a useful tool in research problems in which objectives are the study of the bone marrow.

Hyperactivity In Children, Pat Luttmann May 1971

Hyperactivity In Children, Pat Luttmann

Student Scholarship

The provided document, written in 1971, explores the multifaceted nature of hyperactivity in children, primarily within the framework of minimal brain dysfunction or MBD. The author notes that while these children often appear physically normal, they struggle with a disorganized central nervous system that prevents them from processing environmental stimuli effectively. This neurological impairment manifests as a cluster of symptoms, most notably hyperkinesis, distractibility, impulsiveness, and emotional instability. The text emphasizes that the number of children identified with these disorders is increasing, partly due to medical advances that allow more children to survive difficult births.

Diagnosis and treatment require a …

The Effect Of Early Postpartum Teaching Of Infant Feeding On Maternal Concern, Linda M. Richter, K. Judy Toews May 1971

The Effect Of Early Postpartum Teaching Of Infant Feeding On Maternal Concern, Linda M. Richter, K. Judy Toews

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An experimental study was conducted on thirty primiparae during the postpartum period to determine if individualized instruction regarding infant feeding would result in a lower level of maternal concern in this area. The study sample was randomly and evenly divided into a control and an experimental group. It was statistically determined that the two groups were homogeneous in regard to age, education, occupation, previous information (prenatal classes and reading) and help at home. The experimental group received individualized instruction by the researchers concerning their chosen method of infant feeding on the second postpartum day. There was no instruction given the …

The Effects Of A Topically Applied Anti-Inflammatory Agent On Root Resorption In The Replanted Teeth Of Canines, William L. Young May 1971

The Effects Of A Topically Applied Anti-Inflammatory Agent On Root Resorption In The Replanted Teeth Of Canines, William L. Young

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Root resorption is a constant finding on the roots of replanted teeth. In this study it was suggested that root resorption is perhaps related to inflammation and that teeth incubated in an anti-inflammatory agent such as triamcinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid, before replantation would have less resorption. To investigate this hypothesis nineteen mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were extracted and replanted. Ten of the teeth were incubated for five minutes in the steroid and nine control teeth for the same period in a saline solution. Before euthanizing the animals at one, three, five, and seven weeks, a clinical evaluation of …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to find out whether patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.) learn more from auditory or from visual teaching. Of the 30 patients in the sample, 10 used a programmed instruction booklet, 10 used a taped recording of the same programmed material and 10 were in a control group which received no specific teaching.

A pre-test was given to each of the patients who met the criteria for the study. One researcher gave the pre-test through an oral interview with the patient. After the pre-test, the patient received the teaching device assigned to him …

Using A Participating Relationship To Improve Teen-Age Unwed Mother's Self-Esteem, Linda Gail Reeves May 1971

Using A Participating Relationship To Improve Teen-Age Unwed Mother's Self-Esteem, Linda Gail Reeves

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study was to provide an approach to help teen-age unwed mothers increase their feelings of self-esteem and thereby attain a conceptual buffer for better coping with life. Self-esteem was defined as individual perception of the worth of oneself relative to that of significant others. The hypothesis tested was that the participating relationship a community health nurse has with a teen-age unwed mother will significantly increase the mother's self-esteem as measured by statistical Q-Sort analysis.

A convenience sample of twenty teen-age unwed mothers was obtained from referrals from San Bernardino County Health, Welfare, and Probation Departments. The girls were between …

The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson May 1971

The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Infiltration to an injury site or area of bacterial contamination by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (or neutrophils) is an early and essential phase of the early inflammatory reaction. Their action on foreign matter is the most critical step taken by body defense mechanisms in the first 24 hours. Anything which interferes with that action, phagocytosis, greatly hampers early inflammation. This study was designed to see the effect of elevated glucose levels on neutrophil phagocytosis in a unique strain of genetically diabetic mice.

Twenty-two diabetic and twenty-four control female mice were used. Blood glucose determinations and total white counts were made on each …

The Relationship Of The Bucco-Lingual Position Of The Mandibular First Molar To Occlusion And Arch Stability, Lothar M. Guttschuss May 1971

The Relationship Of The Bucco-Lingual Position Of The Mandibular First Molar To Occlusion And Arch Stability, Lothar M. Guttschuss

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Forty non-treated and twenty-two orthodontically treated cases were selected to determine the relationship of the bucco-lingual position of the mandibular first molar to occlusion and arch stability.

Plaster models and occlusal radiographs were obtained from all the cases. Anterior crowding, intermolar width, molar classification, and molar overhang relative to the basal bone were determined. The modified technique for occlusal radiographs used was found to result in radiographs which were more versatile and accurate when interchanged with the model measurements. Clinical applications of this technique include the determination of root angulations, location of impactions, and the fabrication of individualized preformed arch …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The slope of the articular eminence was measured on the cephalograms of 71 subjects. The patients were divided Into three major categories on the basis of skeletal pattern, dental bite type, and Angle's classification. Skeletal pattern was determined by the mandibular plane angle (SNGoGn). High Angle and Low Angle cases were classified by two standard deviations from normal. Dental bite types were divided into Open Dental or Closed Dental according to the absence or presence of anterior disclusion, respectively. Angle's method of classification was also used to divide the sample Into Class I, II, or III malocclusions.

The eminence slope …
