An Anthropometric Study Of The Face And Dentition Of The Papago Indian At The Stewart Indian School, Carson City, Nevada, Stephen J. Christensen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The dentition and craniofacial complex of the Papago Indian was studied and compared to other groups. Casts of plaster and lateral cephalometric roentgenograms were obtained from 31 Papago Indians who were from southwestern Arizona and were attending high school at the Stewart Indian Boarding School, Carson City, Nevada. The individuals were between the ages of 13 and 20 years and had normal jaw relationships with no contiguous missing teeth. Data was obtained for the following variables from an oral examination, dental casts and tracings of the roentgenograms:

  1. Degree of shovel shape of the maxillary centrals.
  2. Frequency of cusp of Carabelli. …

An Anthropometric Study Of The Face And Dentition Of The Apache Indian Population At The Stewart Indian School, Garold D. Becker May 1966

An Anthropometric Study Of The Face And Dentition Of The Apache Indian Population At The Stewart Indian School, Garold D. Becker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Cephalometric and dental morphology records were obtained from forty-three contemporary Apache Indian subjects (living at the Stewart Boarding School for Indians, Carson City, Nevada) to study the cranial, facial, skeletal and dentitional patterns and compare discriminately to other contemporary North American Indian groups: Pima, Papago, Mayo and Chamula. Materials on other Indian tribes considered were obtained from studies completed at Loma Linda University. The data obtained from dental morphology analysis of the Apache Indian subjects was com pared to the Mongoloid Master Pattern (1-4) as described by Moorrees (1957).

The contemporary Apache Indian conformed to the Mongoloid Master Pattern for …

Brains Of Prominent People: History, Facts And Significance, Walther Riese Jan 1966

Brains Of Prominent People: History, Facts And Significance, Walther Riese

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In conclusion, in the brains of outstanding right-handed people (Haeckel, Monakow, Pilsudski) the more complicated convolutional and fissural patterns were found on the left hemisphere; in those of outstanding left-handed people (Menzel, Edinger) on the right one. The second brain reported here revealed some overdevelopments on the right, others on the left hemisphere. Strangely enough, very little is known about side-differences in the average brain. It seems that the middle frontal convolution and the inferior parietal lobe are more developed on the right hemisphere, the inferior frontal convolution on the left one. Nothing is known about the handedness of the …

Mayo Dental Morphology, Val K. Artress Jun 1965

Mayo Dental Morphology, Val K. Artress

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Mayo Indian of Sonora, Mexico, was selected for a study of dental morphology. The objectives of the investigation were to determine the extent to which the Mayo conformed to the four criteria of the Mongoloid dental master pattern, and to compare eight other specific tooth morphologic characteristics with like studies on Mongoloid and non-Mongoloid peoples. Plaster casts were made on a sample of forty-one Mayos.

The results of the study indicate that Mayos exhibit a 46 percent frequency of shovel-shape maxillary incisors, classifying "moderate shovel" and "shovel" together. The maxillary central-lateral width difference of 1.5 mm is small compared …

A Cephalometric Comparison Of The Chamula, Mayo And Navajo Indians, Norman C. Bunker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Lateral head x-rays were obtained on selected samples of 24 Chamula, 29 Mayo and 39 Navajo Indians for cephalometric comparison.

Cephalometric evaluation was carried out by means of the Bjork analysis. Mean values for each of the Indian groups were determined and compared with each other and with the mean values of a group of Swedish conscripts studied by Bjork. The mean values were statistically analyzed and and subjected to the Student's "t" test to determine the significant levels of differences.

Results revealed that in comparing the three Indian groups significant differences do appear. They are few and general concordance …

Construction And Validation Of Six Mental Health Sub-Scales By Age, Sex, And Educational Status, Thomas James Boynton Jul 1964

Construction And Validation Of Six Mental Health Sub-Scales By Age, Sex, And Educational Status, Thomas James Boynton

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Purpose of the Study

The topic considered in this thesis is the construction and validation of six mental health sub-scales which are based upon procedures controlling for age, sex, and educational status. Each item in a 22 item mental health scale is tested for validity by age, sex, and educational status. Six sub-scales, one for each dichotomy of the three social groups, are constructed from this procedure. The validity of these sub-scales is then tested via six different criteria of mental health. Finally, the validity of the six sub-scales, the original 22 item scale, and a related …

Cranial Base Changes In Patients Treated With Cervical Traction And Bite Plane, Arthur J. Morgan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

During orthodontic treatment extra-oral forces of considerable magnitude are applied to the maxillary molar teeth to correct an anterior-posterior maxillary mandibular dysplasia.

The treatment method of choice with Class II, Division 1 malocclusions in the late mixed dentition and early permanent dentition age is generally with the use of cervical traction.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of cervical traction on the development of the cranial base in patients subjected to Its use.

This investigation utilized before treatment and after treatment lateral cephalometric roentgenograms of twenty-five patients presenting a Class II, Division 1 malocclusion. Post treatment …

A Comparative Study Of Two Contemporary Methods Of Cephalometric Analysis, Alden B. Chase May 1963

A Comparative Study Of Two Contemporary Methods Of Cephalometric Analysis, Alden B. Chase

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A comparative cephalometric study was made of nineteen cases, fourteen of which were patients under treatment at the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, Loma Linda University. The remainder were individuals considered to have normal occlusions.

The review of the literature emphasized the plethora of analyses and the fact that cephalometry is a tool that must be mastered if the orthodontist is to give the best service. Thus the need for a study to compare the methods of analyzing the cephalograph. A study was made to compare two main methods of analysis and to determine whether or not the information …

A Technique For Studying The Spacial Relationship Of Oral Hard Tissues Utilizing Panoral Radiography, Howard W. Conley Jun 1962

A Technique For Studying The Spacial Relationship Of Oral Hard Tissues Utilizing Panoral Radiography, Howard W. Conley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although panoral radiography employing various techniques has been described in the literature since 1949, no information is available relative to its application in quantification of positional charge of the hard tissues of the oral region.

An assessment of the radiographic equipment available to this investigator for quantification studies seemed imperative before embarking on this research.

In order to establish a standard, five exposures were made on radiographic film rotating the source of radiation from left to right and from right to left. These films were superposed and it was established that the tolerances found using the Panorex machine were within …

Economy And Protein Malnutrition Among The Digo, Luther P. Gerlach Jan 1961

Economy And Protein Malnutrition Among The Digo, Luther P. Gerlach

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In short, even where protein malnutrition is primarily a result of poor environment, economy, and technology, other, often less obvious, traditional cultural patterns must be taken into account in any development and improvement program. If kwashiorkor is to be eliminated satisfactorily, and if contingent problems are to be kept to a minimum, these other patterns must often also be modified.

The importance of traditional cultural patterns is perhaps best illustrated by an example of a people who suffer from protein malnutrition primarily because of them. The Digo tribe of coastal Kenya and Tanganyika, among whom this writer conducted anthropological field …
