Time Of Lambing, W L. Mcgarry, I. K. Scott Jan 1960

Time Of Lambing, W L. Mcgarry, I. K. Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE time chosen for lambing depends on many factors, and the final decision rests with the individual flock-owner who has to consider how different times fit in with the overall programme of farm operations; how they will influence the marking percentage, the marketing, the thrift of his sheep and most important, how they influence the profit from his sheep operations.

Ticks Affecting Animals In Australia, J Shilkin Jan 1960

Ticks Affecting Animals In Australia, J Shilkin

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

WHILE there are many external parasites affecting animals in Australia, information in regard to their geographical distribution and incidence is far from complete.

However, there is little doubt that the ticks, and in particular, the cattle tick, are the most important of these parasites in Australia.

We are fortunate that many species are not present in this country, as some of them are carriers of serious diseases of both man and animals.

Pullorum-Tested Poultry Flocks : 1960, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1960

Pullorum-Tested Poultry Flocks : 1960, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

EARLY in 1955, an amendment to the Stock Diseases Act made blood-testing compulsory for all commercial breeding and hatchery flocks of poultry, and it was required that the incidence of infection, as determined by the last test prior to the commencement of hatching, must be less than two per cent.

Pulpy Kidney Is Still A Sheep Killer, F C. Wilkinson Jan 1960

Pulpy Kidney Is Still A Sheep Killer, F C. Wilkinson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALTHOUGH considerable publicity has been given to methods of control by vaccination, numbers of sheep are lost every year in outbreaks of infectious enterotoxaemia— the disease commonly known as "pulpy kidney."

Cattle Lice : Spray Now For Prevention, F C. Wilkinson Jan 1960

Cattle Lice : Spray Now For Prevention, F C. Wilkinson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALTHOUGH lice infestation can occur in any season of the year, the heaviest infestations are found during the winter.

This build up of lice infestation normally starts in the autumn but if the cattle are treated by spraying at this period, the majority of the lice are killed and the build up is prevented.

Thus the old saying "Prevention is better than cure" certainly applies with regard to cattle lice.

Observations On The Formation And Dissolution Of Various Thrombi In Vivo By Direct Visualization, James D. Blanding Jr. Jan 1960

Observations On The Formation And Dissolution Of Various Thrombi In Vivo By Direct Visualization, James D. Blanding Jr.

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

This investigation was an attempt to ascertain the effects of various physical factors on the formation and dissolution of various thrombi in the living animal. The main method consisted of crushing living veins in the mesenteries of the small intestines of frogs and rats and, with horizontally aimed microscopes: 1. Watching the formation of precipitous, sticky coatings on blood cells and blood cell masses. 2. Observing the building of intravascular material into easily detectable thrombi. 3. Studying the various phenomena occurring in the thrombi and in the adjacent blood streams. 4. Observing the eventual disintegration of most of the fresh …

The Effects Of Reserpine On Adrenal Responses To Nicotine And On Cardiovascular Responses To Exogenous Epinephrine And Norepinephrine, Ervin E. Bagwell Jan 1960

The Effects Of Reserpine On Adrenal Responses To Nicotine And On Cardiovascular Responses To Exogenous Epinephrine And Norepinephrine, Ervin E. Bagwell

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Since the isolation or reserpine by Bein et al (1) in 1952, there have been numerous investigations dealing with the pharmacological and physiological properties of this drug. A good proportion of this work has dealt with the effects of reserpine on the function of the sympatho-adrenal system. The present investigation has two primary objectives and is therefore divided into two chapters. The first chapter is concerned with a study of the effects of previous reserpine treatment on the responsiveness of the adrenal medulla to chemical stimulation and the reactivity of the cardiovascular system to this stimulation. In chapter two an …

How Efficient Is Your Drenching Gun? Does It Deliver Sufficient Drench To Kill The Worms?, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE drenching gun pictured certainly doesn't. It is set to give two fluid ounces of drench (60 ccs approximately). However, when tested by squirting the fluid into a measuring cylinder, instead of down the sheep's gullet, it delivered only 30 ccs.

Copper And Cobalt Deficiency Of Livestock In Western Australia, H. W. Bennetts Nov 1959

Copper And Cobalt Deficiency Of Livestock In Western Australia, H. W. Bennetts

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Part 1. Distribution and effects

DISEASES of animals due to copper and cobalt deficiencies are well known in this State where much of the original work, on the cause of these conditions, was carried out. These investigations have been recorded elsewhere and described briefly in this Journal by Filmer and Underwood (1936), Bennetts (1935), (1937), (1940), (1941), (1942) and Bennetts et. al. (1939), (1942). During more recent years the distribution of these deficiencies in Western Australia has been surveyed in some detail. This survey has been made by field investigations and by chemical estimations of animal tissues and pastures from …
