Cirrhosis: What Is It?, Charles M. Caravati Jan 1968

Cirrhosis: What Is It?, Charles M. Caravati

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

An effort has been made to present a panoramic view of cirrhosis. It has been indicated that many agents may initiate an intrahepatic process which may progress to advanced cirrhosis, that the characteristic abnormalities may cause both functional and pathologic multi-system changes, and that these encompass almost every body structure. As the altered structural and physiological changes progress, hepatic decompensation develops, and this often is terminal.

Amino-Acid Absorption, Bertram Fleshler Jan 1968

Amino-Acid Absorption, Bertram Fleshler

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Most, if not all, ingested protein is transported across the gut as its constituent amino acids. Thus, the way the gut handles amino acids is an important physiologic problem, and their mishandling by the gut in disease states represents an important threat to general body activities. I propose to discuss some of the knowledge that has been gathered over the past 10 to 15 years concerning the mechanisms of amino acid absorption. The data to be presented have been gathered from three major kinds of studies: the studies of in vitro model systems, physiologic studies of humans, and studies of …

Bluetongue Of Sheep, M R. Gardiner Jan 1968

Bluetongue Of Sheep, M R. Gardiner

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

BLUETONGUE is a serious disease of sheep, mainly of introduced European breeds, throughout the African continent.

It is maintained there by wild and domestic ruminants in the presence of certain insect vectors (carriers).

The disease has probably existed there from immemorial times among the indigenous ruminants, emerging as a recognised disease only when the much more susceptible European breeds were brought into the continent.

A Brief History Of The Namru-3 Medical Zoology Program, Harry Hoogstraal

United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications

The NAMRU-3 Medical Zoology program began during Easter week of 1950. We had just closed the NAMRU-3 field station at Torit, in Equatoria Province of soulheastern Sudan, and were heading homeward to the United States. However, the offer to remain in Egypt for a year or two to develop a Medical Zoology department at NAMRU-3 provided an interesting challenge after working for several years in tropical forests and grasslands of Africa and other continents. We shall briefly describe subsequent events under four headings: (1) Medical Zoology in Egypt, (2) Ticks and Tickborne Diseases of the World, (3) Kala Azar in …

Amsinckia Or Yellow Burr-Weed (Amsinckia Spp.), G R W Meadly Jan 1968

Amsinckia Or Yellow Burr-Weed (Amsinckia Spp.), G R W Meadly

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

YELLOW BURR-WEED is widely established in the Wimmera and Mallee districts in Victoria, presumably introduced with fodder brought to this country from the United States about 1914.

It is a problem in Oregon and other north west wheat areas of America.

The weed is also widespread in New South Wales, being most troublesome in the wheat-growing sections of the Riverina. It is not established to the same extent in South Australia and Queensland.

The recent discovery of areas infested with yellow burr-weed at Merredin prompted the Agriculture Protection Board to declare it a primary noxious weed for Western Australia.

Worms In Sheep. 4. Drenches For Treatment And Control Of Worms In Sheep, W A. Halhead

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

PREVIOUS articles in this series have described the species of worms affecting sheep in Western Australia, their life histories and the factors which lead to the seasonal rise and fall in worm burdens.

A programme of strategic (preventative) drenching has been outlined which is based on a knowledge of these seasonal changes in worm burdens.

Partial Reinforcement With A Small Number Of Acquisition Trials : The Effects Of Reward Technique, Samuel Joseph Thios Jan 1968

Partial Reinforcement With A Small Number Of Acquisition Trials : The Effects Of Reward Technique, Samuel Joseph Thios

Master's Theses

There have been a number of investigators who have noted superior resistance to extinction of a runway locomotion response by rats which were trained under partial reinforcement schedules as compared with rats trained under continuous reinforcement schedules (e.g., Logan, Beier & Kincaid, 1956; Weinstock, 1954; Badia, 1965; McCoy & Marx, 1965; Black & Spence, 1965).

The present experiment, involving four acquisition trials and nine extinction trials, was designed to investigate the influence of reward technique in an experimental context which systematically examined the effects of thwarting and nonthwarting reward techniques.

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

SWINE ERYSIPELAS, first diagnosed in Western Australia in 1960, has become a source of considerable loss to the pig industry.

Most losses have resulted from carcass condemnation at abattoirs because of arthritis caused by the erysipelas organism.
