Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball S. Erdman
Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball S. Erdman
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
Although botanists have been actively collecting in Utah for well over a century, the distribution of many plants are as yet imperfectly known. This is, in part, due to the scattered nature of Utah herbarium material. Also the terrain of the state has impeded collection in more rugged and remote areas. The present study gathers together the data from the major collections of native Utah trees and clarifies our present understanding of tree distributions in the state. The older collection records have been extensively supplemented by the field work of the author and other botanists.

Growth hormone (GH) synthesis and release is controlled by hypothalamic GH releasing factor. Thyroid hormones, androgens and estrogens in physiologic concentrations enhance GH secretion but a controlling role for glucagon and vasopressin in GH release is not established. Under stress, ACTH directly facilitates GH release while the similar action of the catecholamines is mediated by the a-adrenergic receptors. Though physiologic doses of glucorticoids and progestins do not affect GH liberation, prolonged administration of medroxyprogesterone acetate or of glucocorticoids in high dosage will decrease blood levels or blunt Gti responsiveness. GH enhances the release of insulin. A shift in adrenal steroid …

Comparison Of Amounts Of Verbal Response Elicited By A Speech Pathologist In The Clinic And A Mother In The Home, Joan Mathis
Comparison Of Amounts Of Verbal Response Elicited By A Speech Pathologist In The Clinic And A Mother In The Home, Joan Mathis
Dissertations and Theses
Language assessment of children is an essential task of the speech clinician and many studies have been concerned with the validity of the data gathered. Few studies, however, have investigated examiner variability as a possible source of deviation in language assessment. This study was designed to evaluate and compare the amount of verbal output which children with normal language use when examined by two different examiners when the examiners are in their most comfortable setting.
Six children, four years of age, were examined by a speech pathologist in the clinic and the mother in the home and the 12 fifteen-minute …
The Effect Of Self-Directed Structure Versus Adult-Directed Structure In The Learning Of Articulation Skills In First And Second Grade Boys And Girls, Doris Elaine Haley
The Effect Of Self-Directed Structure Versus Adult-Directed Structure In The Learning Of Articulation Skills In First And Second Grade Boys And Girls, Doris Elaine Haley
All Master's Theses
The comparative effectiveness of two speech correction approaches was studied in the therapeutic situation (within the program and the setting of the public school). The Van Riper adult-directed auditory stimulation method, used by many speech therapists today, was compared with a self-directed and modified Backus and Beasley approach to sound correction. The problem resolved was: Which method will be most effective in helping first and second grade children acquire adequate articulation skills?
Vital Apical Cortical Marginal Ostectomy, Elbert W. Clark
Vital Apical Cortical Marginal Ostectomy, Elbert W. Clark
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The dentition has been suspect as an unfavorable influence in the healing potential of the jaws. Today, many surgical procedures are based on the supposition that teeth should be avoided, endodontically treated, or removed from the sphere of tissue infliction. On the other hand, and abundant blood supply and osteogenic capability have been recognized as favorable factors in repair.
An extra oral removal of an osteoid osteoma from the body of the mandible of a thirty-year-old female resulted in vital apicoectomies of her molar teeth as well as the removal of the medullary blood supply. An uneventful course of healing …

Bibliography Of Diseases And Parasites Of Marine Fish And Shellfish (With Emphasis On Commercially Important Species), Carl J. Sindermann
Bibliography Of Diseases And Parasites Of Marine Fish And Shellfish (With Emphasis On Commercially Important Species), Carl J. Sindermann
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The literature on diseases and parasites of marine animals has been accumulating at an accelerating rate in recent decades, and at a seemingly geometrical rate in the past few years. Reviews of selected aspects of the subject have appeared (Cheng, 1967; Sindermann, 1966; Sindermann and Rosenfield, 1967). References listed in these papers include a significant, but still a small part, of the available literature. With the proliferation of journals in many languages throughout the world, a complete bibliography, even in a narrow area of research, is almost an impossibility. Then too, the daily appearance of new published information represents an …

The Hypocalcemic Effects Of Actinomycin D And Mithramycin, Eduardo L. Reyes, Robert W. Talley
The Hypocalcemic Effects Of Actinomycin D And Mithramycin, Eduardo L. Reyes, Robert W. Talley
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Both actinomycin D and mithramycin are useful agents in the treatment of cancer. They can also produce hypocalcemia, a comparatively rare phenomenon in cancer. Two such cases are presented in detail. Neither patient had the classic symptoms of hypocalcemia. Instead, the clinical picture was more compatible with hypercalcemia. The mechanism of action of each drug is explained; therapeutic implications are made with regards to their synergistic effects when used in combination with the standard calcium-lowering agents. Attention is drawn to the inhibitory action of these two agents on the calcium-mobilizing effect of the parathyroid hormone. The hypocalcemic effects of these …

Osteological And Mylogical Comparisons Of The Head And Thorax Regions Of Cnemidophorus Tigris Septentrionalis Burger And Ameiva Undulata Parva Barbour And Nobel (Family Teiidae), Don Lowell Fisher, Wilmer W. Tanner
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
The anterior osteological elements of the skull, lower jaw, and wrist along with the anterior myological characters discussed and figured in this report suggest that A. u. parva and C. t. septentrionalis are members of distinct groups which can be differentiated by internal morphologic characters. Although comparisons were restricted to highly geographically separated individuals of the same family, their general body form and structure appear to be similar.
A great number of anatomical structures are shared in common, but the significant differences between them include:
1. General skull appearance. The skull of C. is generally lighter, that is the bones …
Pinyon-Juniper Succession After Natural Fires On Residual Soils Of Mesa Verde, Colorado, James A. Erdman
Pinyon-Juniper Succession After Natural Fires On Residual Soils Of Mesa Verde, Colorado, James A. Erdman
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
A mountain brush vegetation typified by Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) and serviceberry (Amelanchier utahensis) dominates the uplands of Mesa Verde National Park. There is evidence that this brush element is a successional stage that has been maintained by repeated natural fires in a large part of the Mesa Verde landscape. This study was conducted to determine the role of fire in the region's ecology, the nature of the climax pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) vegetation, and the major successional stages that lead to the climax condition.

Hypophyseal Growth Hormone: I. Control Of Secretion, M. Saeed Zafar, Raymond C. Mellinger, Lewis B. Morrow
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Growth hormone (GH) is a major hormone of the anterior pituitary gland. Once established, its secretion continues throughout life. GH was first recognized in 1866 as a factor controlling growth. More recently, it has been demonstrated as a vital regulator of fat, carboyhdrate and protein metabolism. In fact, GH influence on the intermediary metabolism is the major mechanism by which growth and development are regulated. Numerous hormonal and nonhormonal factors have been shown to modify the basic pattern of GH synthesis and secretion. In this article we have reviewed some of these nonhormonal factors.

An In Vivo Perfusion Apparatus For Studies On Gingival Disease In The Albino Rat : Assessment By A Perfusion Of The Enzymes Collagenase And Hyaluronidase, James A. Smith
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis describes an in vivo perfusion apparatus which can continuously deliver controlled quantities of solutions to localized, contralateral intraoral areas in albino rats. Three animals were per fused on the experimental area (the mesial sulcular area of the maxillary first molar) on one side with tap water and Trypan blue. Localization of the solution delivered and minimal histological changes due to the presence of the apparatus was demonstrated on these animals. Solutions of .5%, 1%, and 2% hyaluronidase and collagenase were perfused on the experimental areas of nine animals. When both enzymes were used, hyaluronidase always preceded collagenase in …

The Development Of Electrophysiological Techniques Allowing "In Situ" Measurement Of Electrical Changes Within Smooth Muscle Cells Of Mesenteric Micro-Vessels, William J. Willems
The Development Of Electrophysiological Techniques Allowing "In Situ" Measurement Of Electrical Changes Within Smooth Muscle Cells Of Mesenteric Micro-Vessels, William J. Willems
Master's Essays (1922 - )
The primary objective or this study is essentially to acquire further knowledge of the factors involved in the nervous and humoral control of vascular smooth muscle tone. The relative importance of the nervous and endogenous vasotropic humoral control or vasomotor tone under normal conditions as well as under conditions or hypotension can be evaluated, at least in part, by observing the electrical activity occurring in single vascular smooth muscle cells of the mesenteric microcirculation. This thesis describes: 1) the development of electrophysiological methods for the measurement of such activity in ''in situ" micro-vessels with circulation and innervation intact, and 2) …
Induced Early Closure Of The Spheno-Occipital Synchondrosis In The Guinea Pig, Arthur A. Ewert
Induced Early Closure Of The Spheno-Occipital Synchondrosis In The Guinea Pig, Arthur A. Ewert
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was designed to explore the significance of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis in cranial base and craniofacial development.
Premature fusion of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis in the guinea pig was induced by placing a wire staple in the cranial base across the synchondrosis. One end of the staple was placed in the basi-occipital bone and the other end in the basi-sphenoid bone.
Results of this early closure showed marked changes in craniofacial morphology. The entire cranium anterior to the auditory bullae dropped down in relation to the axial skeleton. The cranial base from basion to the intersphenoidal synchondrosis was markedly shortened. …

A Study To Demonstrate The Immediate Destination Of An Embolus Formed In The Lumen Of A Peripheral Venous Catheter, Rosemarie Morikone Emori
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was designed to show the immediate destination of an embolus formed in the lumen of an intravenous catheter placed in a peripheral vessel. The hypothesis stated that clots injected into a peripheral vessel will lodge in the lungs. A subhypothesis was that the clot may lodge anywhere along the circulatory pathway.
Indications of need for the study as shown by the review of literature were the following: (1) the complications resulting from the frequent use of intravenous polyethylene catheters, (2) experimental studies that showed that clots were formed around intravenous catheters, (3) the evidence that intravenous catheters predispose …
Evaluation Of The West African Diet Of Plant Origin, Aletha B. Fuller
Evaluation Of The West African Diet Of Plant Origin, Aletha B. Fuller
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Africa is one of the areas of the world where proteincalorie malnutrition (PCM) of childhood is especially prevalent. A review of literature revealed causes and incidence of PCM in Africa, general pathological signs of PCM, and efforts in Africa to overcome PCM through protein supplementation. The effect of red pepper on the gastro-intestinal tract was also reviewed.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate three indigenous West African foods--peanuts, black-eyed peas, and egusi seed—as protein supplements when added to the basic West African diet of plant origin. The protein supplements were chosen because they met the criteria of economy, …
Periodontal Pocket Reduction Following Gingival Curettage, Robert B. Tandy
Periodontal Pocket Reduction Following Gingival Curettage, Robert B. Tandy
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate pocket reduction following gingival curettage. The effects of temporary pressure packing, inflammation, oral hygiene, pocket depth, age and sex of the patient were evaluated.
Three hundred twenty-eight periodontal pockets were studied in forty-one adult patients selected with interdental lesions ranging from 3.0 - 7.5 mm. in depth. Pocket depth and gingival height were measured preoperatively, one month postoperatively and two months postoperatively. The mean change in pocket depth and gingival height was calculated and statistical significance was determined for all measurements.
The results show that after a two-month postoperative evaluation following gingival …
Sensory Stimulation To Produce Micturition In The Cerebral Vascular Accident Patient, Mary Alice Pearce
Sensory Stimulation To Produce Micturition In The Cerebral Vascular Accident Patient, Mary Alice Pearce
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An experimental study was conducted in a university and a convalescent hospital using eight female CVA patients with urinary incontinence to test the hypothesis that the experimental technique of icing and brushing LI dermatome skin area would increase the probability that the CVA patient would void within a prescribed time and place. A modified one group method was used in which the patient served as her own control by participating in two types of bladder training programs over an eight to twelve hour period for four consecutive days. Program A used the experimental technique; Program B omitted the experimental technique. …
