A Comparative Consideration Of Lipoprotein Distribution And Stress Response In The Mallard Duck And Man, Janice Mackay Apr 1972

A Comparative Consideration Of Lipoprotein Distribution And Stress Response In The Mallard Duck And Man, Janice Mackay

Honors Theses

Lipid is associated with all of the major serum protein fractions of both the mallard duck and man. however, whereas the ρ lipoproteins predominate in man with little lipo-albumin evident, according to available literature, in ducks the lipo-albumin constitutes more than half of the serum lipoproteins, and a substantial lipo-prealbumin fraction is evident. Most studies of lipo-proteins are carried out on human serum primarily for the purpose of diagnosis of abnormalities. The stress response in many animals includes a rise in serum α-globulin levels, but its physiological basis is still speculative. While a consideration of the changes in lipoprotein distribution …

Comparative Gastroscopic Study Of Choline Salicylate And Aspirin, S. C. Danao, B. M. Schuman Mar 1972

Comparative Gastroscopic Study Of Choline Salicylate And Aspirin, S. C. Danao, B. M. Schuman

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Choline salicylate is the anhydrous choline salt of salicylic acid. It possesses the therapeutic effects of aspirin. Clinical trials suggest that it is less irritating to the gastric mucosa. A double-blind gastroscopic study of the acute effects on the gastric mucosa of choline salicylate, aspirin and matching placebo was carried out. Using the fiberoptic gastroscope. the stomach was examined and photographed before, and ten minutes after, the patient had swallowed the tablets. Results were evaluated on the basis of combined endoscopic and photographic observations. This study suggests that choline salicylate in its tablet form causes less gastric mucosal injury than …

Carbon And Nitrogen As Regulators Of Algal Growth In Treated Sewage, Edward G. Foree, Charles Reece Scroggin Mar 1972

Carbon And Nitrogen As Regulators Of Algal Growth In Treated Sewage, Edward G. Foree, Charles Reece Scroggin

KWRRI Research Reports

Continuous flow algal cultures were grown under three different growth conditions using secondary sewage treatment plant effluent as the growth medium. The only variable within each run was the hydraulic residence time. The concentrations of growth regulating nutrients were varied between the runs so comparisons of the algal mass, composition, nutrient uptake, and genera could be made. The importance of CO2 availability for algal growth was also studied. A kinetic theory which based algal growth on cellular nutrient concentration was verified. The second phase of the study was a batch culture study in which the same growth medium was …

The Effect Of Glucose On The Food Intake Of Goldthioglucose Injected Mice, Janet Lahti Jan 1972

The Effect Of Glucose On The Food Intake Of Goldthioglucose Injected Mice, Janet Lahti

Dissertations and Theses

Jean Mayer has postulated the presence of glucoreceptors located primarily in the ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei of the brain which are activated by glucose in the measure that they utilize it. According to Mayer, hunger occurs when glucose is not available for metabolic purposes and satiation supervenes when glucose is made available. Control of this mechanism rests with the glucoreceptors. These receptors are believed to be destroyed when an injection of the compound goldthioglucose is given to mice. These animals subsequently become obese and are found to have gold deposits and lesions in the ventromedial area and also in other parts …

Fetal Abnormalities Of Viral Origin, Paul D. Parkman, Harry M. Meyer Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The high incidence of acute infections known to occur in pregnant women contrasts with the relative rarity of fetal damage and attests to the efficiency of the mechanisms by which the fetus is protected in utero.

Body Temperature During Surgery And Anesthesia, Amir Rafil Jan 1972

Body Temperature During Surgery And Anesthesia, Amir Rafil

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The recognition of fulminant hyperthermia and accidental hypothermia during anesthesia and surgery has given a new impetus to clinical thermometry in the operating room. It is suggested that in order to recognize and avoid these conditions in the anesthetized patient, a routine of continuous monitoring of body temperature be added to our armamentarium for patient care.

Progress Of Congenital Heart Disease: The Team Approach As It Includes The Anesthesiologist, Carolyn M. Mccue Jan 1972

Progress Of Congenital Heart Disease: The Team Approach As It Includes The Anesthesiologist, Carolyn M. Mccue

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Advances in cardiac surgery have been great in the last 30 years, but further progress is anticipated, especially in infants. A cooperative effort involving referring physicians, pediatric cardiologists, physiologists, anesthesiologists, surgeons, and intensive care nurses is required to continue this trend.

Observations Of Lens Epithelium In Cell Cultures, Walter J. Geeraets Jan 1972

Observations Of Lens Epithelium In Cell Cultures, Walter J. Geeraets

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The following investigation had been conducted to evaluate lens epithelial cells in vitro as a potential suitable model for future studies of chronic low dose ionizing radiation effects on this cell type in vitro. Since there is a great range of dose requirements to produce in vivo radiation cataract in man, monkeys, and rabbits, and an equally wide range in time from radiation exposure until the first minimal lens changes can be biomicroscopically detected, it may be assumed that in vitro comparison of cells derived from these three species may provide some explanation for the in vivo differences.

The Effect Of Electrical Curren On The Crystalline Lens, Herbert Wiesinger Jan 1972

The Effect Of Electrical Curren On The Crystalline Lens, Herbert Wiesinger

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, the cataractogenic properties of electric current were studies. Previous observations dealing with this subject utilized a multiple shock technique--something which is unlikely to occur in any accidental exposure. This study focused on the production of lens changes in rabbit eyes following single exposures of measured electric current.

Radiation Cataract: Biomicroscopic Observations In Rabbit, Monkey, And Man, Walter J. Geeraets

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The type or configuration of lens changes in these two species was quite different. This can be understood on the basis of the structural differences of their crystalline lenses based on the location of the suture lines.

Experimentally Induced Coloboma In The Golden Hamster: A Preliminary Report, Ragnit Geeraets Jan 1972

Experimentally Induced Coloboma In The Golden Hamster: A Preliminary Report, Ragnit Geeraets

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The present study represents the second part of a more comprehensive investigation of the morphogenesis of the normal and abnormal embryonic fissure. The first part, an electron microscopic study of the normal closure, has already been completed. The second part consists of the attempt to induce colobomata by means of hypo- and hyper-vitaminosis A. If both attempts are successful, the resulting colobomata will then be compared with one another as well as with the sequence of events in the normal closure. It is hoped that this investigation will permit some insight into the cellular phenomena that lead to a congenital …

Herbals : The Vade Mecum Of The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, William G. Peacher M.D. Jan 1972

Herbals : The Vade Mecum Of The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, William G. Peacher M.D.

The Courier

Claus Nissen, in his book, Herbals of Five Centuries, 1958, defines a herbal as a book on medicinal plants which describes their appearance, gathering and preparation, contains notes concerning their preservation and storage, and finally provides the inclusion of data about their indication and dosage. The word "herb" was first used around 1500 to differentiate a plant with medicinal properties from an ordinary plant. Actually, manuscripts surviving from remote antiquity indicate a knowledge of this subject. With the advent of printing and advances in wood and metal engraving, the herbal became the indispensable reference book for physicians, apothecaries and the …

Current Knowledge Of Gonadotrophin Releasing Factor(S), Emanuel M. Bogdanove Jan 1972

Current Knowledge Of Gonadotrophin Releasing Factor(S), Emanuel M. Bogdanove

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

What I want to discuss are not the potential therapeutic or diagnostic uses of these newly available compounds, which are really very speculative, but certain features of the physiological control system in which these compounds are thought to play key roles. Any rational system of therapeutics or prophylaxis involving these releasing factors, or their derivatives, must be based on adequate understanding of (1) the physiological roles of these compounds, (2) how these roles may be altered by disease, and (3) the effects specific disturbances of the control system(s) in which they operate can be expected to have on reproductive processes.

Oxygen Toxicity And Anesthesia: A Ten-Year Review And Overview, John Q. Durfey Jan 1972

Oxygen Toxicity And Anesthesia: A Ten-Year Review And Overview, John Q. Durfey

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Anesthesia personnel will become increasingly involved in situations related to such exposures to oxygen at high pressure (OHP) such as will be found in the new fields of industry and agriculture now being developed underwater, sometimes at great depths. It is the responsibility of the specialty to continue basic and clinical research in these areas and to expand clinical teaching to encompass the management of related problems.

Some Therapeutic Considerations In Diabetic Retinopathy, Walter J. Geeraets, William W. Carroll

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

With the increasing emphasis on photocoagulation therapy in diabetic retinopathy, its potentials and, most probably, the beneficial effects such therapeutic modality may have in arresting or even improving diabetic retinopathy, one should realize the limitations, the present lack of factual knowledge, and the theories underlying such treatment.

Psychological Abnormalities Of Sexual Identification, James L. Mathis Jan 1972

Psychological Abnormalities Of Sexual Identification, James L. Mathis

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The normal process of development of sexual identification slides almost unnoticed through well-defined, but overlapping stages to a definite end point. That end point is an individual who senses that his core gender, male or female, is consistent with the body morphology, the external genitalia, the chromosomal configuration, and the hormonal balance. Also, there must be the development of personality traits, masculine or feminine, consistent with the sense of core gender. Finally, although somewhat outside the scope of our present discussion, there must be the establishment of a role or life style in adulthood in accordance with the first two …

Health Counseling For The Overweigh Adolescent Girl, Elizabeth J. Handley Jan 1972

Health Counseling For The Overweigh Adolescent Girl, Elizabeth J. Handley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study was undertaken for the purpose of seeing how a health counseling program for overweight adolescent girls could be developed in a secondary high school setting. Initially, the study developed out of an awareness and concern for the problem of obesity among teenage girls, especially those in a secondary school. To provide a strong background for the use in both planning and executing a health counseling program, the study reviewed the health literature dealing especially with several topics:

a. The prevalence of obesity.

b. The relationship of obesity to mental and physical health.

c. The influence of food faddisms …
