The Effect Of Pre-Exposure To Sucrose On The Acquisition And Extinction Of A Conditioned Aversion, Shirlee Fenwick
The Effect Of Pre-Exposure To Sucrose On The Acquisition And Extinction Of A Conditioned Aversion, Shirlee Fenwick
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Twenty-eight female, water deprived rats were given 5 minutes access to sucrose for either 1,7,14, or 21 days. They were then given LiC1 injections every third day until an aversion to the sucrose developed. The results indicated that as amount of pre-exposure to sucrose increased, the number of illnesses required to develop an aversion increased. Also, the rate of extinction of the conditioned aversion was inversely related to the number of exposures required. to establish the aversion.
Interstitial Cystitis, Edward O. Janosko Ii
Interstitial Cystitis, Edward O. Janosko Ii
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
[From the Introduction] There is only one report of an attempt to induce interstitial cystitis in animals by immunologic methods. Silk in 1970 was unable to produce any lesions in rats or rabbits following a single intramuscular injection of homologous bladder antigen (5 mgm) in complete Freund's adjuvant. This amount of crude antigen is small compared to doses of 200-400 mg which have been successfully used to produce lesions in other organs. Multiple injections of antigen will sometimes produce a lesion when single injections of antigen are unsuccessful. Heterologous antigens, moreover, are occasionally more effective than homologous antigen in producing …
The Effect Of Salicylate And Chloroquine On Prostaglandin-Induced Articular Damage In The Rabbit Knee, Carol Teitz
The Effect Of Salicylate And Chloroquine On Prostaglandin-Induced Articular Damage In The Rabbit Knee, Carol Teitz
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
[From the Discussion] In summary, we have shown that prostaglandin E1, when injected in the rabbit knee produces synovitis and cartilage matrix degradation. The finding that salicylate cannot prevent this degeneration whereas chloroquine can., is most likely due to their different mechanisms of action in this system. Whereas chloroquine's ability to stabilize membranes is protective int his experiment, salicylate's ability to prevent the biosynthesis of prostaglandins is by passed and therefore is not.

Phenotypic Males With 46, Xx Karyotype: Report Of Two New Cases, G. R. Rubio, Lester Weiss, J. F. Nunez, M. Saeed Uz Zafar
Phenotypic Males With 46, Xx Karyotype: Report Of Two New Cases, G. R. Rubio, Lester Weiss, J. F. Nunez, M. Saeed Uz Zafar
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Two sex chromatin positive phenotypic males were found to have 46, XX karyotypes. Both had small testes and elevated gonadotropins with low testosterone levels. Semen analysis could not be obtained but one man claimed to have a daughter. In one patient, mosaicism was suggested by the finding in a single cell of a chromosome morphologically resembling a Y. A second cell line was not found in the other patient. Possible explanations for the development of a male phenotype in the absence of demonstrable Y chromosome include the existence of two cell lines or mosaicism, an autosomal sex determining gene and …
Greenhouse Fungicide — Environmental Carcinogen?, Marvin D. Anderson, Herbert S. Rosenkranz
Greenhouse Fungicide — Environmental Carcinogen?, Marvin D. Anderson, Herbert S. Rosenkranz
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A simple screening method, in which a bacterial mutant deficient in its ability to repair DNA, was used to detect genetic damage from a widely-used fungicide. The finding strengthens the suspicion that it may be a potent human carcinogen. The unique role of the physician in eliciting a history of exposure from a patient with cancer is emphasized in the case report.
The Nutritive Value And Supplementation Of Ogi (Pap), The Major Nigerian Weaning Food, Elizabeth E. Gyaami
The Nutritive Value And Supplementation Of Ogi (Pap), The Major Nigerian Weaning Food, Elizabeth E. Gyaami
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutritive value of ogi, which is the national weaning food in Nigeria, and to supplement it with indigenous foods that are easily produced in Nigeria, available in the local market, locally used, and within the economic capacity of the people. The protein content of corn and ogi was determined by the Kjeldahl method and the amino acid content was determined by ionexchange chromatography. The quality of the foods was evaluated by the rat growth method and the protein efficiency ratio (PER).
Ogi and com, from which ogi is made, contained essentially …

Viruses And The Conntective Tissue Diseases, Morris Ziff
Viruses And The Conntective Tissue Diseases, Morris Ziff
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
A number of observations in the last few years have attracted attention to the possibility of viral infection in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). One of these is the occurrence of interwoven tubular structures, usually in the endothelial cells of the kidney but also in the lymphocytes and in fibroblasts when SLE skin fibroblasts are cultured. These tubular structures have resembled viruses (they were thought by their discoverers to be myxo- or paramyxoviruses), but it has been argued that they are not viruses because of their size and appearance and because they have been produced in tissue cultures from subjects who …
The "Three R'S" Of Delayed Hypersensitivity, David Horwitz
The "Three R'S" Of Delayed Hypersensitivity, David Horwitz
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Delayed hypersensitivity is one of several immune responses initiated by thymus-derived (T) lymphocytes. The mononuclear infiltrate of delayed hypersensitivity is a collaborative phenomenon between T lymphocytes and monocytes. This collaboration can be separated into components which I have chosen to call the "three R's" of delayed hypersensitivity. In this discussion I will define these "three R's" and examine the usefulness of this concept in clinical medicine.

Advances In The Surgical Treatment Of Patients With Extracranial Cerebral Vascular Disease, Thoralf M. Sundt Jr.
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Since the subject of surgery for carotid artery occlusive disease is too broad to be covered in its entirety, we will dwell primarily on some results of cerebral blood flow measurements and electroencephalograms performed during this procedure, their meaning and relationship to states of cerebral ischemia, and some controversial aspects of the surgery. An understanding of cerebral hemodynamics and the tolerance of neural tissue to ischemia is of major importance to any surgeon or physician dealing with this illness.

Immune Complex Reactions In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, John Staige Davis Iv
Immune Complex Reactions In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, John Staige Davis Iv
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
We should first try to define systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Table 1 lists criteria proposed by a committee of the American Rheumatism Association. If four of these 14 major criteria are positive, then there should be about 98% specificity for SLE. There are clearly many facets to this disorder. Let us consider mechanisms that might account for a multisystem disease such as this.

Advances In The Medical And Surgical Management Of Intractable Partial Complex Seizures, Hooshang Hooshmand
Advances In The Medical And Surgical Management Of Intractable Partial Complex Seizures, Hooshang Hooshmand
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Seizures can be due to a variety of acute, subacute, or chronic diseases with different etiologies. Clinically, they may manifest as focal or generalized phenomena. Whereas the majority of the patients suffering from partial seizures are easily controlled with medications, in a small number of patients treatment may fail. The failure may be due to incorrect diagnosis or incorrect therapy. The efficacy of medical treatment for seizure disorder depends upon six factors: 1) dosage; 2) the size of the patient; 3) drug interaction; 4) drug specificity for the disease; 5) the nature of the disease for which the drug is …

Advances In The Management Fo Patients With Malignant Brain Tumors, Charles B. Wilson
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In describing what is new in the management of malignant brain tumors, I shall confine myself largely to chemotherapy and shall outline what we think is important based on our own experience, what we have achieved with single and multiple agents, and where we are going. We have just reviewed our five-year experience and find that chemotherapy, perhaps, is the only thing that is new.

WKU Administration Documents
Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

Influence Of Ethanol On Glucose Tolerance, Insulin Secretion And Glucagon Secretion In Man, James Mcmonagle
Influence Of Ethanol On Glucose Tolerance, Insulin Secretion And Glucagon Secretion In Man, James Mcmonagle
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
[From the Introduction] In response to the widespread consumption of ethanol and the medical problems related to its abuse, the world literature on ethanol metabolism has become voluminous. The interaction between the metabolism of ethanol and intermediary metabolism of carbohydrates has been amply elucidated. One particular very important aspect of this ethanol-carbohydrate interaction which has only recently begun to be investigated is the effect of ethanol on glucose tolerance. The preliminary studies concerning the effects of ethanol on glucose tolerance have provided both exciting findings and unanswered questions. This dissertation, examining the effects of ethanol on glucose tolerance and insulin …
