Studies In Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, Theodore Ronald Simon
Studies In Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, Theodore Ronald Simon
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
[From the Introduction] This study serves to define the population at risk for developing slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Although epidemiological studies of this disease have been completed, this large sample helps to confirm the earlier work. Moreover, it characterizes the relationship of this sample with previous samples and hence evaluates the contention that the results of other studies on this sample are based on a typical group of SCFE victims.

Toward Meaningful Protection Of Worker Health And Safety, Joseph A. Page
Toward Meaningful Protection Of Worker Health And Safety, Joseph A. Page
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In the annals of job health and safety, 1974 was a signal year. It produced an epidemic of occupational liver cancer associated with vinyl chloride disclosure of a plan to soft-pedal federal regulation of industrial hazards in return for contributions to the 1972 Nixon reelection campaign, and the publication of a brace of exposes decrying the human toll taken by workplace perils. These events furnish hard evidence that the bright hopes raised by passage of the landmark Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 remain far from fulfillment.
In the search for reasons for this ostensible failure, two books present …

A Systematic Investigation Of Warning Stimulus Modality Effects On Two-Way Active Shuttle Avoidance Performance In Rats, James Paul Villaume
A Systematic Investigation Of Warning Stimulus Modality Effects On Two-Way Active Shuttle Avoidance Performance In Rats, James Paul Villaume
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Three students systematically investigated the hypothesis of Rosic, Frontali and Bignami (1969) that certain stimuli facilitate higher levels of avoidance performance (i.e., more correct responses) because of their ability to generate greater amounts of unconditioned motor activity during the stimulus presentation. Experiment I showed that buzzer, tone and light stimuli produce different amounts of unconditioned motor activity in rats, with the buzzer generating the most activity and the light generating the least. In Experiment II, the introduction of non-contingent shock resulted in a reduction in motor activity levels, but the buzzer still produced higher levels of activity than the light. …

Studies On The Characterization And Activiation By Soluble Factor Of A Sodium-Activated, Magnesium-Dependent, Adenosinetriphosphatase In Rat Cerebral Cortex, Alan B. Forrest
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study presented evidence for the existence of a membrane-bound, sodium-activated ATPase which does not require potassium ions for its activity. Furthermore, the data suggest the presence of a soluble factor which activates this enzyme and may play a regulatory role in sodium transport.
A Photomicrographic Guide To The Saprolegniaceae Of Illinois, Ronald L. Butler
A Photomicrographic Guide To The Saprolegniaceae Of Illinois, Ronald L. Butler
Masters Theses
There is a paucity of information concerning the occurrence and distribution of the Saprolegniaceae of Illinois. These fungi, commonly called "water molds", are of particular interest as many are potential parasites of fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic plant and animal life. It is of considerable interest to students of the fungi and of practical value to the fisheries biologists and environmentalists to have available a means of identification for these organisms.
This paper provides a descriptive and photomicrographic account of the Saprolegniaceae of Illinois. Included herein are dichotomous keys to the genera of this family as well as generic descriptions …
An Investigation Of The Behavioral Effects Of Methylphenidate Hydrochloride On Schedule-Induced Polydipsia In Rats, Linda Sederquist Smith
An Investigation Of The Behavioral Effects Of Methylphenidate Hydrochloride On Schedule-Induced Polydipsia In Rats, Linda Sederquist Smith
Masters Theses
The influence of methylphenidate hydrochloride injections on six male Charles River rats displaying schedule induced polydipsia was examined in this study. Bar pressing, licking, and water consumption were measured during a total of 63 daily one hour trials conducted with a variable interval 60-second schedule of bar pressing for pellets with water constantly available. The polydipsic response was acquired by subjects during the first 28 trials. Subjects were then divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental subjects recieved a 1 mg/kg injection of methylphenidate prior to regular trials 29-49 and extinction trials 50-63. Control subjects were injected with a …

The Development Of A Course Of Study In Fda Drug Regulatory Procedures, Robin Adele Wills
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It is the purpose of this thesis to develop a course of study for pharmacy schools on drug regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A summarization of the history of the development of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and of pharmacy education reveals a lack of interface between the two. The necessity for the interface of pharmacy education and the agency which has significant control over the products forming the basis of the pharmacy profession will be made apparent. A period of residency through which the course of study on drug regulation by the FDA was to …
Studies On The Characterization Of A Soluble Factor Of A Sodium-Activated, Magnesium-Dependent Adenosinetriphosphatase In Rat Cerebral Cortex, Lily Toh
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
From the standpoint of physiologists, emphasis has been placed on viewing the chemical nature of the membrane as an operational barrier to the free diffusion of ions. This tends to explain the fact that the ionic composition of the cytoplasm of the animal cell differs from its external fluid environment.
It is well know that where sodium is the principal cation of the extracellular fluid, potassium has such a role inside the cell. Since there appears to be differential distribution of these ions across the cell membrane, this infers a concentration gradient of these ions. This differential distribution is important …
The Effect Of Various Amounts Of Lard In The Rations To Early Weaned Pigs, Suchin Jalayanakupta
The Effect Of Various Amounts Of Lard In The Rations To Early Weaned Pigs, Suchin Jalayanakupta
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Several investigations have shown that very young piglets utilize dietary fat very badly. Peo et al. (1957) reported that there was no significant difference in feed efficiency due to dietary fat to piglets from an age of 8 days up to an age of 28 days. But the appearance of the piglets improved when fat was added to the rations. Eusebio et al. (1965) found that increased fat levels in the diet did not im- prove the efficiency of feed utilization, and in general added fat tended to decrease the rate of gain. Nielsen et al. (1970) have indicated that …

Stability, Packaging, Storage, And Sterilization Of A Medicated Dry Foam, Armen Gostanian
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The basic unmedicated formula consists of dextran, sorbitol, Miranol 2 MCA Modified, and water. The major advantages of the film are 1) fast release rates, 2) ease of application to denuded skin without aggravation, and 3) lack of necessity for removal, hence no aggravation. However, it is extremely sensitive to moisture and elevated temperatures which is a major disadvantage. Excessive humidity will solubilize the film or make it too tacky to handle while very low humidity causes the film to lose its flexibility. Also, elevated temperatures remove moisture from the film and cause it to lose flexibility much as with …
The Renal Response To Ringer's Infusion In Developing Rats, Brian Stephen Misanko
The Renal Response To Ringer's Infusion In Developing Rats, Brian Stephen Misanko
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
In order to study the effectiveness of body water and electrolyte regulation in young animals, the developmental pattern of renal function of rats in response to body fluid volume expansion with Ringer’s was investigated. Clearance experiments were performed on male Wistar rats of two age groups, twenty to thirty days and forty to sixty days of age. After two hours of a stabilization period, urine was collected for three consecutive twenty minute periods to establish a control value. The rats were then given an intravenous infusion of mammalian Ringer's solution of a volume equal to 4.6% o: body weight. Urine …

An effective methadone maintenance program must do more than dispense measured doses in a well-organized clinic. It should attempt to effect changes in the patient's personality and coping mechanisms, social situation, and other conditioning factors which maintain his involvement in narcotics.
The Relationship Of Alcohol Consumption In Rats To Morphine And Codeine Intake And The Metabolism Of Dopamine, Hsiu Fen Liu
The Relationship Of Alcohol Consumption In Rats To Morphine And Codeine Intake And The Metabolism Of Dopamine, Hsiu Fen Liu
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The effects of morphine and codeine free-choice alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. Intakes of a 10% alcohol solution in milliliters per 100 gm. of body weight were on recorded weekly. No difference was found in the alcohol intake of rats given either a morphine-supplemented diet (0.01% of the diet) or daily injection of morphine sulfate (2 mg./kg.); however, there was a significant lower intake of water (p < .05) in those rats fed the diet with morphine. Total fluid consumption of both groups given the morphine-supplemented diet and daily injection of morphine sulfate was decreased (p < .05). It was found that morphine did not affect the percentage of total fluid consumed as alcohol or the weight gain.
Two levels of codeine phosphate (10 mg./kg. and 20 mg./kg.) were injected subcutaneously into rats twice a day. It was observed that the codeine significantly decreased alcohol intake in rats …

The Effects Of Progressive Relaxation And Myoelectric Feedback On Respiratory Resistance In Bronchial Asthmatics, Daphne Browne Shah
The Effects Of Progressive Relaxation And Myoelectric Feedback On Respiratory Resistance In Bronchial Asthmatics, Daphne Browne Shah
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
For the individual with bronchial asthma, an asthmatic attack can be a life threatening experience. A theory of bronchial asthma as a conditioned response has been recently proposed by several investigators. It was suggested that this conditioned response may be modified by lowering the arousal level, and as a result, decreasing the asthmatic response.
The problem identified in this exploratory study was to measure the effects of relaxation on the smaller or peripheral airways of a convenience sample of six asthmatic subjects fourteen to seventy years of age. It was hypothesized that an increased degree of total body relaxation would …
