Three Linked Enzyme Loci In Fishes: Implications In The Evolution Of Vertebrate Chromosomes, D C Morizot, D A Wright, M J Siciliano
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
A three-point linkage group comprised of loci coding for adenosine deaminase (ADA), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and 6-phospho-gluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD) is described in fish of the genus Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae). The alleles at loci in this group were shown to assort independently from the alleles at three other loci--isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2, and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase 1. Alleles at the latter three loci also assort independently from each other. Data were obtained by observing the segregation of electrophoretically variant alleles in reciprocal backcross hybrids derived from crosses between either X. helleri guentheri or X. h. strigatus and X. maculatus. The linkage component …

Attitudes Of Psychiatric Nurses And Aides At An Oregon State Hospital Toward Homosexuality, Don Andersen
Attitudes Of Psychiatric Nurses And Aides At An Oregon State Hospital Toward Homosexuality, Don Andersen
Dissertations and Theses
Homosexuality is something which has been a part of almost every society throughout history. In western society this has been a subject of secrecy and taboo. Throughout our history homosexuals have been persecuted and forced to hide their sexual identity. The effects of this on an individual should be something of concern to professionals in the mental health field.
While in the past there has been little knowledge of homosexuality, and no self-expression on the part of homosexuals, there has, in recent years, been growing information and expression. The effect of this change on mental health workers is what this …
Clinical Uses Of Biofeedback: A Review Of Recent Research, Richard M. Lee, Scott E. Baldwin, Julia A. Lee
Clinical Uses Of Biofeedback: A Review Of Recent Research, Richard M. Lee, Scott E. Baldwin, Julia A. Lee
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Biofeedback refers to a special type of operant conditioning (ie, a category of learning) in which subjects acquire control over physiological processes through the feedback of information. Its methodology is based upon principles of behavioral science developed in the laboratory through experimentation. It has been conclusively demonstrated that humans (and other animals) can learn to control such actions as EKG parameters, blood pressure, body temperature, EEG, individual motor units, and glandular secretions. Clinically, biofeedback has been applied to a wide variety of psycho-physiologic disorders in which a measurable response requires alteration. The best established applications are tension and migraine headaches, …

Sex And Violence: Can Research Have It Both Ways?, Richard A. Dienstbier
Sex And Violence: Can Research Have It Both Ways?, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
During the last decade, the literature on media exposure has been dominated by a single theoretical system of personality functioning—the social learning model. The model emphasizes that the disinhibition of already-learned behavior, the learning of new behaviors, and the establishment of patterns of personality result from observing the behavior of other people (models) and from vicarious reinforcement upon viewing those models successfully engaging in rewarded sequences of behavior.
It is a tribute to the degree to which social learning oriented psychologists have successfully influenced intellectual and governmental thinking that the model is seldom questioned as providing the appropriate basis for …
Ultrasonic Versus Hand Filing Of The Human Root Canal System, Howard W. Scholz Jr.
Ultrasonic Versus Hand Filing Of The Human Root Canal System, Howard W. Scholz Jr.
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A comparison was made of ultrasonic filing versus hand filing using three solutions to flood the canals of 24 extracted human maxillary central incisors. A modified PR-30 Cavitron insert was used in a Cavitron 1010 unit for the ultrasonic filing. The clinical crown was removed with a diamond saw and water spray at the cemento-enamel junction. The two major groups were ultrasonic filing versus hand filing; the three subgroups were solution/solvents - 10% EDTA, 2.0% NaOCl, and distilled water.
After filing, the roots were grooved longitudinally with a high speed bur and cracked opened with a mallet and chisel. The …
Human Placental Alkaline Phosphatase And Steroid Metabolism By Rat Adrenals, Allen G. Meier
Human Placental Alkaline Phosphatase And Steroid Metabolism By Rat Adrenals, Allen G. Meier
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Human placental alkaline phosphatase was purified by butanol extraction, methanol precipitation and chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. The pH optimum was found to be 10.9. The enzyme was competitively inhibited by di-ethyl-p-nitrobenzyl-phosphonate and copper sulfate. An increase in enzymatic activity occurred in the presence of the phosphate ion (HPO4) and ATP.
The enzyme was crystallized from a 40% saturated solution of ammonium sulfate and shown to be homogeneous by sedimentation analysis. Homogeneity of the enzyme was also demonstrated using poly-acrylamide-gel-electrophoresis. At a pH of 7.5% the electrophoretic pattern yielded a single band and showed no significant contamination.
The metabolic transformation …

Stressor Effects Of High Relative Humidity And A High Moisture Diet On Appearance Of Disease From Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus In Larvae Of Porthetria Dispar (L.), Pauline Thomas
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
High relative humidity (R.H.) and a high moisture diet were tested as stressors in the incidence of nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) disease of larvae of Porthetria dispar (L.). Relative humidity was shown to have no effect on the appearance of NPV disease in larvae reared in the laboratory. However, a high mortality from other causes was sustained by a group of larvae subjected to both high R.H. and a high moisture diet. The absence of NPV disease during the first larval instar period confirmed earlier findings that effective egg sanitization virtually eliminates NPV disease. This supports current disfavor with the …

Bioenergy And Emotions, Vickie C. Walter
Bioenergy And Emotions, Vickie C. Walter
Theses
This thesis explores the concept of bioenergy as an integral force underlying both human physiology and emotional experience. Drawing on a wide range of historical, cultural, and scientific perspectives, the work examines how different traditions and researchers have conceptualized and attempted to measure or influence this subtle energy. The discussion begins with Wilhelm Reich’s notion of “orgone energy,” a vital force he linked to psychological health and emotional regulation. Reich’s controversial theories and experimental devices are considered in the broader context of psychoanalysis and somatic therapy.
The study then traces parallels between Reich’s work and ancient energy systems such as …

The Effect Of Seed Sprouting Time And Light On Phytic Acid Concentration, Sheryl J. Learned
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Phytic acid was quantitatively analyzed in sprouted alfalfa, lentil, mung bean and soy bean seeds. Pulverized dry seeds served as a control and the various sprouting times were 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours after a 12 hour soaking. A comparison was made between sprouts grown in the light for the last 24 hours vs sprouts kept in darkened areas for the total growing time.
Analysis was based on dry weight and utilized the direct method in which 1) phytic acid was extracted by hot HC1, 2) ferric phytate was precipitated by adding an excess of ferric chloride to the …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The major purpose of the first volume of an intended three-volume series by Samuel Yochelson and Stanton E. Samenow (1976) is to provide evidence that understanding the thought processes of chronic criminals provides the major key to understanding criminal behavior. Volumes II and III will deal, respectively, with the techniques of therapy developed for the analysis and correction of criminal thought patterns, and with the special problems of therapy with criminals who are chronic drug users. This review of Volume I is divided into three parts, the first being a review of the content and major points of the book, …

Role Of Cytochrome P-450 In Methemoglobin Formation By Primaquine With Hamster Liver Microsomes, Tommy L. Hicks
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The role of cytochrome P-450 in in vitro methemoglobin formation by primaquine was investigated through a series of experiments with golden-Syrian hamsters, treated before sacrificing with phenobarbital or 20-methylcholanthrene to increase the cytochrome P-450 content or with cobaltous chloride to cause its decrease. To determine the extent of induction in the liver microsomal cytochrome P-450-dependent mixed-function oxidases, cytochrome P-450 content and formaldehyde from the 0-demethylation of p-nitroanisole were measured. A 90% increase occurred in cytochrome P-450 content with phenobarbital pretreatment and an increase of 102% was observed in p-nitroanisole 0-demethylation. Formaldehyde from primaquine increased 64%. The methylcholanthrene treatment produced a …

The Philosophy And Goals Of A Farm-Living Group Home For Mentally Retarded Citizens In The State Of Washington: A Working Plan Of Implementation, Max R. Grimmett
All Graduate Projects
Group homes were established as a result of House Bill #465 passed by the Washington State Legislature in 1969. The purpose of this bill was to make it possible for some people living in state institutions to move into smaller and more "homelike" places.
The purpose of the study was to determine what has been done in the area of group homes under the Washington State Guidelines. A study was made of the existing group homes and the programs offered at the present time. After collecting data, a plan was developed to create a proposed farm-living group home for mentally …
Insulin Receptors, William G. Blackard
Insulin Receptors, William G. Blackard
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Much of the emphasis in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus has justifiably been placed on the endocrine gland, the pancreas. Extensive studies on the biosynthesis and release of insulin from the beta cell, bihormonal control of metabolism by insulin and glucagon, and more recently the role of somatostatin have attracted the attention of students of the subject; but considerable evidence exists to suggest at least some role of tissue resistance to insulin in the pathogenesis of this disorder. There have been many advocates for extra pancreatic factors causing diabetes. One of the first was Mirsky, who proposed that diabetes might …

Oral Hypoglycemic Agents, Harold Rifkin
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In conclusion, comment is made on the findings of the University Group Diabetes Program (UGDP). The purpose of the UGDP was to determine whether or not control of blood glucose levels would help to prevent or delay vascular disease in non-insulin-requiring diabetics. After 8 1/2 years of follow-up at 12 university-affiliated treatment centers, "The findings of the study indicate that the combination of diet and tolbutamide therapy is no more effective than diet alone in prolonging life. Moreover, the findings suggest that tolbutamide and diet may be less effective than diet alone or diet and insulin, at least insofar as …
