Reporting Requirements Under The Animal Welfare Act: Their Inadequacies And The Public's Right To Know, Mark Solomon, Peter C. Lovenheim Jan 1982

Reporting Requirements Under The Animal Welfare Act: Their Inadequacies And The Public's Right To Know, Mark Solomon, Peter C. Lovenheim

Laws and Legislation Collection

We conclude from the analysis that the Reporting System, as presently administered, fails to achieve its primary statutory objective: it does not provide APHIS with information sufficient to demonstrate that researchers have used pain-relieving drugs "appropriately" and in accordance with "professionally acceptable standards." The chief reasons for this failing are (1) regulations and guidelines do not define "pain" or "distress," (2) regulations and guidelines do not adequately define "routine procedures," and (3) regulations and guidelines do not require meaningful explanations for the withholding of pain-relieving drugs in procedures acknowledged to cause pain.

Maternal Plasma 6-Keto Prostaglandin F1Α In Preeclampsia, Augusta Simpson Roth Jan 1982

Maternal Plasma 6-Keto Prostaglandin F1Α In Preeclampsia, Augusta Simpson Roth

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The possibility of decreased prostacyclin (PGI2) in preeclampsia-eclampsia is currently being studies by several laboratories. Because of prostacyclin's various actions (platelet aggregation inhabitation, vasodilation, stimulation of renin release, and possible inhibition of the hypertensive effects of angiotensin II), an increase in the peripheral activity of this chemical could explain much of the altered physiology of normal pregnancy. A relative decrease in peripheral activity could tie together the various pathophysiological findings of preeclampsia-eclampsia. Therefore, plasma 6-keto, PGF1α, the stable nonenzymatic metabolite of prostacyclin, was measured in women with preeclampsia, and in those women of various gestational ages having a normal pregnancy. …

Production Of Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1-Like Cytotoxin By Escherichia Coli, Alison D. O'Brien, Gerald D. Laveck, Michael R. Thompson, Samuel B. Formal

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Strains of Escherichia coli previously implicated or proven to be causes of diarrhea were examined for production of a toxin similar to that of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 (Shiga). Organisms grown in an iron-depleted broth were lysed by pressure disruption followed by ultracentrifugation. Saline-dialyzed extracts were tested for cytotoxic effects on HeLa cells that were neutralizable with antiserum to Shiga toxin. Among the 13 E. coli strains so analyzed, 11 made a Shiga-like cytotoxin in levels ranging from trace (two avirulent isolates) to amounts equivalent to S. dysenteriae type 1 (two noninvasive strains that did not make E. coli heat-labile …

Immunological Approaches To The Diagnosis Of Systemic Candidiasis, Gene Elizabeth Burges Jan 1982

Immunological Approaches To The Diagnosis Of Systemic Candidiasis, Gene Elizabeth Burges

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The increasing incidence of systemic candidiasis and the difficulties diagnosing the disease on the basis of clinical data and culture results have prompted investigation into immunological methods of diagnosis. Detection of anti-Candida antibodies has proved to be not sufficiently specific for diagnosis of systemic disease since antibodies are frequently found in the normal individual in whom the organism lives as a commensal and in superficially infected individuals. Our project resulted in the development of a new quantitative immunofluorescence assay for quantitation of anti-Candida antibodies which is able to differentiate quite well (p< 0.0005) between systemically infected patients and normals or superficially infected patients. We have also investigated the value of purified antigens and have shown that the use of cytoplasmic protein antigens rather than those containing cell wall polysaccharide confers greater specificity on a qualitative test for anti-Candida antibodies but that a carbohydrate-containing antigen is adequate for differentiating systemic disease when a quantitative test is used. Attempts to diagnose systemic candidiasis by detection of circulating antigen have met with varying degrees of success. We were unable to detect antigen by counter-immunoelectrophoresis, a quantitative immunofluorescence inhibition assay, or an ELISA inhibition assay in the sera of rabbits in whom a Candida endocarditis was induced or in the sera of systemically infected patients. One postulated reason for this failure is the presence of the antigen in the form of circulating immune complexes. We have, therefore, investigated the possibility of the existence of complexes containing Candida antigen and antibody in the sera of patients with systemic candidiasis. Using four screening tests, a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was found for immune complex levels in a group of patients and a group of normal individuals. Isolation and characterization of immune complex-containing fractions from five patients with candidiasis indicated the presence of anti-Candida antibodies and/or antigen in at least three of them. Therefore, these fungal immune complexes can be assumed to exist and may play a role in the difficulties in detecting circulating antigen and, furthermore, may be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of disseminated candidiasis.

Argt Caused By Toxic Antibiodies : Research Report, P Vogel Jan 1982

Argt Caused By Toxic Antibiodies : Research Report, P Vogel

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A fortunate coincidence, discovered recently, has provided annual ryegrass toxicity researchers with valuable knowledge which may help them understand how the ARGT toxins affect animals, and further their investigations into vaccine development. A toxic antibiotic, identified years ago, has proved to be closely related to the ARGT toxins. Antibiotics are generally regarded as effective agents for the control of many bacterial and fungal infections. However, some of them are toxic to both the bacteria and the host, whether man or animal.

Leptospirosis : A Disease Of Animals And Man, G M. Robertson Jan 1982

Leptospirosis : A Disease Of Animals And Man, G M. Robertson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Leptospirosis is best known in Western Australia as an insidious cause of abortion in pigs and cattle. Less well known is the fact that leptospirosis can occur in any warm blooded animal, including man, and that farmers, meat workers and veterinarians frequently risk infection. The disease is difficult to diagnose but research in the Microbiology Section of the Department of Agriculture's Animal Health Laboratory has resulted in the development of a new test which overcomes some of these difficulties

The Promise Of Abundant Life: Patenting A Magnificent Obsession, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1982

The Promise Of Abundant Life: Patenting A Magnificent Obsession, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

The purpose of this essay will be to explore the parameters of the scientific imperative to explore truth. The scope of this inquiry is shaped in part by the United States patent laws and administrative interpretations and, more specifically, by the United States Supreme Court in its recent holding allowing the new forms of life created in a laboratory to be patented. The ultimate purpose of this piece, then, is to refute the arrogance of power theory expressed as being implicit in the investigations of the vast potential for the positive achievement of good through harnessing the "New Biology." Thus, …

Effects Of Various Hormones On Human Carcinoma Cell Proliferation, Y. L. Gao, B. S. Leung, A. H. Potter, W.C.Y. Yu

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Cell proliferation of a mammary adenocarcinoma cell line, CAMA-1. is affected by a number of steroid hormones and prolactin in long-term cultures. Estrogenic compounds stimulate cell growth while antiestrogenic compounds inhibit it. Prolactin can synergize the estrogenic effect. Progesterone, glucocorticoid or androgen reduce cell proliferation. Dihydrotestosterone is a very potent inhibitor,- effective at as low as 10 nM, and its effect is independent of estrogen action. Cortisol is a less effective inhibitor at concentrations below 10 nM; at these levels cortisol exhibits a slight inhibition which appears to be unrelated to estrogenic action. However, at higher concentrations, cortisol markedly reduces …

The Effect Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Blood Lipids, Carol Lynn Bartholomew

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The effect of cardiac rehabilitation on blood lipids was studied in a sample of seventeen male participants of the Greenville Hospital Center cardiac rehabilitation program. These subjects all suffered myocardial infarctions, but none had surgery to by-pass the obstructed coronary circulation. Paired values were obtained for triglyceride, serum cholesterol and HDL cholesterol before, and after the exercise program. The time span between the before-exercise and after-exercise values ranged from five to thirty-one weeks. The differences in the paired values were analyzed by the t-test. No significant decrease occurred in triglyceride or serum cholesterol. A significant increase occurred in HDL cholesterol.

Reported Animal Rabies In Arkansas: 1950-1981, Gary A. Heidt Jan 1982

Reported Animal Rabies In Arkansas: 1950-1981, Gary A. Heidt

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Reported animal rabies in Arkansas is reviewed for the years 1950-81 . Total cases ranged from 44 in 1969 to 332 in 1979, with a mean of 154. Domestic animals accounted for 72.5% of the total cases until 1961-63 and then declined to 15.8% from 1964-81. This switch from domestic to wildlife rabies corresponded to a similar trend in nationally reported rabies and was probably due to increased public awareness and the vaccination of domestic dogs and cats. Over the 31 year period a total of 18 species of mammals has been implicated in reported rabies (individual species of foxes, …
