Utilization Of The Intact Male For Red Meat Production: A Review, S. C. Seideman, H. R. Cross, R. R. Oltjen, B. D. Schanbacher
Utilization Of The Intact Male For Red Meat Production: A Review, S. C. Seideman, H. R. Cross, R. R. Oltjen, B. D. Schanbacher
Contraception and Sterilization
Castration has long been a traditional practice in the United States. Research studies indicate that intact males grow more rapidly, utilize feed more efficiently and produce a higher-yielding carcass with less fat and more edible product. The disadvantages of the intact male include aggressive behavior (bull and boar); undesirable odors and flavors (boar and ram); lower quality grade (bull); lower meat tenderness (bull and ram) and undesirable meat color (bull and ram). Research is needed to develop antemortem and(or) postmortem handling procedures that offset the disadvantages of the intact male so that the meat and livestock industry can take advantage …

Immunological Involvement In Porcine Bioprosthetic Valve Degeneration: Preliminary Studies, Rollin H. Heinzerling, Paul D. Stein, Jeanne M. Riddle, Donald J. Magilligan Jr., John J. Jennings
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Preliminary animal model studies have indicated that porcine bioprosthetic valves can be recognized by the immune system. This report presents the results of a preliminary investigation on the implanted valves of 27 patients. While none of the 27 demonstrated an immune response to porcine serum proteins, five patients developed antibodies against the implanted valve leaflets. Cells were enzymatically eluted from a degenerated bioprosthetic valve and were classified by means of monoclonal antibodies. Although these cells were not found to be of T-lymphocyte lineage, they did express la determinants and had the morphologic appearance of plasma cells. We therefore conclude that …

A Morphologic Overview Of The Porcine Bioprosthetic Heart Valve, Jeanne M. Riddle, Paul D. Stein, Donald J. Magilligan Jr.
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The glutaraldehyde-processed porcine aortic heart valve is similar in its microscopic organization to the human aortic valve (1). It is important to understand the detailed histology of this bioprosthetic valve because distinct components of its leaflets are altered selectively when the valve is initially collected from the pig and stabilized with the commercial glutaraldehyde fixation process. Further structural modifications also occur after the commercially processed valve has been inserted into a patient where it undergoes progressive degeneration.

Observations Suggesting A Possible Link Between Gammacarboxyglutamic Acid And Porcine Bioprosthetic Valve Calcification, Joseph A. Helpern, Stephen J. Mcgee, Jeanne M. Riddle
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Observations that link gammacarboxyglutamic acid (Gla) peptides with ectopic calcification are accumulating in the literature and may be summarized as follows: 1) Gla peptides selectively bind calcium and hydroxyapatite. 2) The presence of detectable levels of Gla in calcified tissue is concurrent with the onset of mineralization. 3) In an animal model, osteocalcin (a Gla-containing protein) accounts for more than 90% of all the Gla found in the resulting subcutaneously implanted calcified leaflet. 4) Vitamin D stimulates osteocalcin synthesis in cultures of osteosarcoma cells, and in vitamin D deficient rats subcutaneously implanted valve leaflets are not calcified. 5) Gla content …

Bovine Hydrocephalus : A Case Report, P. Chantaraprateep, P. Prateep
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
A case of bovine dystocia due to congenital hydrocephalus calf in an indigenous cow was reported. The examination per vagina revealed a large fluid sac, both forelegs and the head of the calf, correction and traction was not possible owing to the abnormal size of the head. Caesarean section was performed successfully with the animal lied on the right lateral position using epidural and local anaesthesia. The calf weighed 20 kg. The sac with diameter of 26 cm contained about 3 litres of serous fluid. Furthermore, there were 2 pinna like structures, one on the right upper eyelid with dimension …

Taxol Inhibits The Nuclear Movements During Fertilization And Induces Asters In Unfertilized Sea Urchin Eggs, G. Schatten, H. Schatten, T. H. Bestor, R. Balczon
University Faculty and Staff Publications
Taxol blocks the migrations of the sperm and egg nuclei in fertilized eggs and induces asters in unfertilized eggs of the sea urchins Lytechinus variegatus and Arbacia punctulata. Video recordings of eggs inseminated in 10 microM taxol demonstrate that sperm incorporation and sperm tail motility are unaffected, that the sperm aster formed is unusually pronounced, and that the migration of the egg nucleus and pronuclear centration are inhibited. The huge monopolar aster persists for at least 6 h; cleavage attempts and nuclear cycles are observed. Colcemid (10 microM) disassembles both the large taxol-stabilized sperm aster in fertilized eggs and the …
Temporal Pattern Of Gluconeogenesis In Diabetic And Non-Diabetic Chinese Hamsters, John P. Ofenstein
Temporal Pattern Of Gluconeogenesis In Diabetic And Non-Diabetic Chinese Hamsters, John P. Ofenstein
Masters Theses
Gluconeogenesis is a normal physiological response of an individual to low blood glucose levels by which proteins are utilized in order to synthesize new glucose. Gluconeogenic rates in diabetic and normal Chinese hamsters were measured, on four different occasions over a 24 hour period, by injecting a radio-labelled precursor (14C-lactate) into the animals. Then blood was tested for incorporation of the label into glucose. In the fed state, gluconeogenesis shows a circadian change in nondiabetic hamsters as well as in diabetic hamsters, with the diabetic hamsters showing a significantly greater gluconeogenic rate than the non-diabetic hamsters for every …
A Study Of Hypnotic Age Regression Using The Rorschach Scored By The Exner Comprehensive System, Scott William Trylch
A Study Of Hypnotic Age Regression Using The Rorschach Scored By The Exner Comprehensive System, Scott William Trylch
Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to compare Rorschach results of hypnotically age regressed subjects with three groups of controls: deeply hypnotized, hypnotizable simulators, and minimally susceptible simulators. The study tested the null hypothesis that hypnotically age regressed subjects differ significantly from subjects in deep hypnosis, hypnotizable simulators, and minimally susceptible simulators on Rorschach scores when scored by the Exner Comprehensive System. A second null hypothesis was that there would be no difference between the age regressed subjects and the three control groups in correspondence to the Exner age norms.
The 24 volunteer subjects were screened for psychological problems, then …

A Component Analysis Of Behavioral Procedures For Increasing Work Rate In Mentally Retarded Adults, Stephen Emory Wong
Dissertations
This study was a component analysis of several procedures commonly employed in behavioral vocational rehabilitation programs. The work rate of retarded subjects was assessed under four conditions: (1) baseline; (2) verbal prompts; (3) verbal prompts and social reinforcement; and (4) verbal prompts, social reinforcement, and monetary reinforcement. Subjects were four, moderately retarded, male clients of a sheltered workshop. The experimental task involved assembly of a metal knife composed of four separate pieces. Treatment effects were analyzed within a mixed multielement reversal design where each subject served as his own control. Results showed that baseline sessions, all started with the simple …
Easily Administered Recognition Of Linguistically-Handicapped Youngsters, Robin J. Webb
Easily Administered Recognition Of Linguistically-Handicapped Youngsters, Robin J. Webb
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study investigates the feasibility of involving parents as evaluators using an objective screening test for their children who are 36 to 42 months of age. A more available and nonthreatening assessor is needed as physicians, dentists and other allied health professionals who are typically used to screen children for speech, language and hearing have not been effective with this age group. This is partially due to the limited contacts they have with these children and the environmental limitations for eliciting an adequate speech and language sample (Behrens, 1978; Webb, 197B; Hirsch, 1981).
An objective-type screening instrument has been designed …
Blood Reservoir Function Of The Fetal Guinea Pig Liver, Gregory A. Roda, Raymond D. Gilbert, Gordon G. Power
Blood Reservoir Function Of The Fetal Guinea Pig Liver, Gregory A. Roda, Raymond D. Gilbert, Gordon G. Power
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
To determine of the fetal liver functions as a blood reservoir, we measured liver blood volume under normal conditions and after hemorrhage and volume loading. Nineteen pregnant guinea pig sows and 54 near-term fetuses were injected intravenously with 51Cr-labeled red cells while the fetuses remained in utero. Ninety seconds later a 0.5-1.0 g sample of liver was garroted with a sharp wire into a tared tube with minimal blood loss. A blood sample was taken to measure counts per ml of blood, the fetus killed and the remainder of the liver weighed. Blood volume of the liver and body …
Healing Following Two Different Surgical Approaches To Treating Deep Periodontal Intraosseous Defects, A. Durwin H. Chamberlain
Healing Following Two Different Surgical Approaches To Treating Deep Periodontal Intraosseous Defects, A. Durwin H. Chamberlain
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Surgical treatment of deep periodontal pockets associated with intraosseous defects has traditionally been performed either with or without resection of the osseous defect. A non-resective approach may provide more gain of attachment while a resective approach may give better pocket reduction. The increased pocket reduction following osseous resection is probably accomplished at the expense of some attachment loss in areas involved by the surgical procedure. Previous studies have compared periodontal surgery with and without osseous resection (i.e. Rosling et al. 1976, Knowles et al. 1979 and Smith et al. 1980). However, the effect of osseous resection does not seem to …

Effect Of Levamisole On The Incidence Of Spontaneous Mammary Tumors In C3h Mice, Robert H. Page, Duilio A. Valdivia, Robert W. Talley, Robert A. Huseby
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Spontaneous mammary carcinoma in C3H mice is preceded by premalignant hyperplastic alveolar nodules. When a primary tumor is evident, examination of the other mammae will reveal a number of microscopic precancerous lesions in various stages of transformation to overt malignant tumors. In an effort to inhibit the development of additional malignant tumors after surgical removal of the first apparent tumor, we treated female C3H/HeJ mice with subcutaneous injections of levamisole (0.6 mg per kg of body weight) on a twice weekly regimen. All further tumors were surgically excised when they became palpable. The surgical excision of bulk tumor burden, immunorestoration …

An Investigation Of Selected Caring Behaviors In A Hong Kong Chinese Village, Mary Jon Waldron
An Investigation Of Selected Caring Behaviors In A Hong Kong Chinese Village, Mary Jon Waldron
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The lack of scientific information regarding caring beliefs, expectations, and behaviors in the Chinese community of Hong Kong was the problem underlying this descriptive study. A knowledge of caring behaviors as they routinely occur within a culture can provide a basis for the development of professional nursing care that is meaningful for the people of that culture. The purpose of the study was to obtain the opinions of the residents of a Hong Kong Chinese village regarding current beliefs and practices relating to touch, surveillance, health counseling, and special ethnocare techniques. Representatives of twenty families were interviewed with the assistance …
Observation Of Bone Formation In The Mandibular Symphysis Following Surgical Separation And Slow Mechanical Expansion In A Baboon, Robert J. Homer
Observation Of Bone Formation In The Mandibular Symphysis Following Surgical Separation And Slow Mechanical Expansion In A Baboon, Robert J. Homer
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Mechanical expansion of the maxilla, at the midline suture, is a widely accepted orthodontic procedure used to gain arch width in certain types of maxillary deficient arches.
In animal research on the mandible, techniques using surgical separation at the symphysis with immediate expansion up to 12 mm, fixation with a metal splint, and autogenous bone transplanted into the expanded area, have been reported to be successful.
To date, no experiment utilizing slow mechanical expansion of the mandible at the symphysis has been reported.
In this pilot study, the mandible of a female baboon was surgically separated A-P at the symphysis. …

Effects Of Systematic Orienting Stimuli On Comatose Patients : Six Case Studies, Carol Ann Cook
Effects Of Systematic Orienting Stimuli On Comatose Patients : Six Case Studies, Carol Ann Cook
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
As a part of a larger, on-going, quasi-experimental research project, this study was an initial clinical trial for the early exploration of a therapeutic regimen of nursing care for the comatose patient. The overall objectives were to elucidate methods to improve the quality of care delivered to the comatose patient and to examine clinical estimates for their potential predictability regarding coma recovery outcome. More specifically, the aim was to investigate the effect of meaningful, systematic orienting stimuli (SOS) provided by professional nurse clinicians and a patient's significant others as evaluated by the criterion variables of Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores …
