Activity Of An Identified Histaminergic Neuron, And Its Possible Role In Arousal Of Feeding Behavior In Semi-Intact Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel Jan 1986

Activity Of An Identified Histaminergic Neuron, And Its Possible Role In Arousal Of Feeding Behavior In Semi-Intact Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

The possible functions of histaminergic neuron C2 were studied in an isolated head preparation from which it was possible to obtain intracellular recordings while the buccal mass exhibited feeding-like responses. Application of food to the lips of the isolated head preparation elicited rhythmic buccal movements that appeared to be ingestion responses, since they moved seaweed into the buccal cavity and towards the esophagus, and their frequency and regularity was similar to the ingestion responses studied in a group of intact animals. The ingestion responses of the buccal mass consisted of 2 main phases of movement of the radula from a …

Caring Choices: Decision-Making About Treatment For Catastrophically Ill Newborns, Betty Wolder Levin Jan 1986

Caring Choices: Decision-Making About Treatment For Catastrophically Ill Newborns, Betty Wolder Levin

Publications and Research

Decision making for catastrophically ill newborns has recently emerged as a social issue. Advances in biomedical technology and practice, and changes in other economic, social and political factors have led to controversy about norms to guide treatment choice. While much has been written on how such decisions should be made, there has been little social science research on how such decisions are actually made.

The purpose of this dissertation is to elucidate the way that clinicians think about treatment decisions for catastrophically ill newborns. The focus is on decision making with respect to the limitation of treatment in those situations …

Mission To collect and report complete, high-quality, and timely population-based cancer data in Louisiana to support cancer research, control, and prevention. Vision To reduce suffering and death from cancer using information collected by the Louisiana Tumor Registry. History Cancer registration in Louisiana began in 1947 at the Charity Hospital Tumor Registry in New Orleans. In 1974, as part of its Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, the National Cancer Institute provided funds for a population-based cancer incidence and survival registry covering Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard parishes. Five years later, the Louisiana Tumor Registry (LTR) was transferred to the …

The Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Soluble Activator For The Sodium Adenosinetriphosphatase From Rat Cerebral Cortex And The Effect Of Cholinergic Agents, Thibaldo Javier Manrique Blanco Jan 1986

The Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Soluble Activator For The Sodium Adenosinetriphosphatase From Rat Cerebral Cortex And The Effect Of Cholinergic Agents, Thibaldo Javier Manrique Blanco

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In order for organisms to co-exist with nonliving matter, envelop to protect their delicate internal functions must be present. There are other reasons for this boundary to exist, e.g. to limit the volume occupied by the organism and to compartmentalize the contents of the organism so that certain critical concentrations may be easily maintained. Such envelopes are, of course, the cellular membranes. Membranes differ greatly between species, as well as within species. Given the complexity to which organisms have evolved, membranes have developed with a myriad of functions and components. It is easy to see differences between plant cellular membranes …

Increased Metabolic Rate In X-Linked Hypophosphatemic Mice, Linda K. Vaughn, Ralph A. Meyer, M. H. Meyer Jan 1986

Increased Metabolic Rate In X-Linked Hypophosphatemic Mice, Linda K. Vaughn, Ralph A. Meyer, M. H. Meyer

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Hyp mice are a model for human X-linked hypophosphatemia, the most common form of vitamin D-resistant rickets. It has previously been observed that Hyp mice have a greater food consumption per gram body weight than do normal mice. This led to the search for some alteration in metabolism in Hyp mice. We found that oxygen consumption was significantly higher in Hyp mice than in normal C57BL/6J mice and this was accompanied by an increased percentage of cardiac output being delivered to organs of heat production (liver and skeletal muscle), to the skin, and to bone and a decreased percentage to …

Sensory Function And Gating Of Histaminergic Neuron C2 In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel Jan 1986

Sensory Function And Gating Of Histaminergic Neuron C2 In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

This paper explores the possible sensory function of the identified histaminergic neuron C2. Mechanical stimulation of a narrow region around the mouth of the animal (perioral zone) elicits brief depolarizing potentials in C2. Extracellular recordings from the peripheral axons of C2 indicate that the depolarizing potentials are due to action potentials that are conveyed from the periphery but do not invade the cell body, since they fail at a region with a low safety factor within the cerebral ganglion. These blocked axonal spikes (A- spikes) function as if they were excitatory synaptic inputs to C2, since the synaptic output of …

An Identified Histaminergic Neuron Modulates Feeding Motor Circuitry In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel Jan 1986

An Identified Histaminergic Neuron Modulates Feeding Motor Circuitry In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

An identified histaminergic neuron, C2, in the marine mollusk Aplysia is a complex mechanoafferent which appears to contribute to the maintenance of food arousal by means of its synaptic connections to the metacerebral cell (MCC). Because C2 also has extensive synaptic outputs to neurons other than the MCC, we studied its possible motor functions. We identified several synaptic followers of C2 and found that some were excitatory motor neurons for extrinsic muscles of the buccal mass, while others were modulatory motor neurons that inhibited contractions. In addition, we found that these neurons and other synaptic followers of C2 received powerful …

Evidence Against The Hypothesis That Prostaglandins Are The Vasodepressor Agents Of Pregnancy. Serial Studies In Chronically Instrumented, Conscious Rats., Kirk P. Conrad, Mary C. Colpoys

Dartmouth Scholarship

Renal hemodynamics increase dramatically during pregnancy, and pressor responsiveness to exogenous administration of vasoconstrictors is attenuated. We investigated whether or not vasodilatory prostaglandins mediate these phenomena. Trained, chronically instrumented, conscious pregnant rats were used. Control values of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) were elevated at midgestation (P less than 0.01 and P = 0.05 from prepregnant means, respectively), and effective renal vascular resistance was decreased (P = 0.05). Indomethacin (4.5-6.5 mg/kg body weight [BW]) failed to decrease renal hemodynamics at this stage of pregnancy; in fact, it raised GFR somewhat further (P less than 0.05). …

The Effects Of Cigarette Smoking And Vitamin E On The Morphology Of Mice Testes, Kathleen Grams Hall Dec 1985

The Effects Of Cigarette Smoking And Vitamin E On The Morphology Of Mice Testes, Kathleen Grams Hall

Masters Theses

Epidemiological studies have produced evidence to support an association between cigarette smoking and abnormal sperm morphology. At the least , an effect on sperm morphology indicates the involvement of the testis. Therefore, the research was designed to survey the potential of cigarette smoking for inducing histopathology in the testes of mice, and if there was damage, would vitamin E overcome it.

In the present study the testes of C57BL/6 mive exposed to cigarette smoke and/or vitamin E and 22 control mice were histologically processed. Sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin were assessed for total histopathology and revealed statistically significant differences …

Ua37/13 Plants Used By The Prehistoric Indians Of Kentucky, Chuck Crume Nov 1985

Ua37/13 Plants Used By The Prehistoric Indians Of Kentucky, Chuck Crume

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

No one knows exactly when the Indians first entered the area we now call Kentucky, but there is an approximation. Archeologists have found evidence of Clovis camps and living sites in the state (9,000 to 12,000 B.P.), This would have been during the Paleo Stage, toward the end of the last ice age. The climate of the area would have been much cooler then. The selection of plants and animals would also have been different than those found in modern times.

Paleo Indians used plants for food, utility and medical uses. It seems that plant use during this period is …

Ethical Decision Making By Hospital Nurses (Work Alienation), Jonathon Lawrence Cox Oct 1985

Ethical Decision Making By Hospital Nurses (Work Alienation), Jonathon Lawrence Cox

Wayne State University Dissertations

The hospital nurse is required to make decisions that affect the lives of patients. The American Nurses Association Code for Nurses ought to be the framework used by nurses in making those ethical decisions. The Code is not the primary basis for ethical decision making as has been shown in this and previous research. In this research the role of hospital employer, personal and professional values of staff nurses has been examined for their influence on the ethical decisions made by nurses. The nurses completed the Health Care Work Powerlessness Scale, and the Nursing Dilemmas Test and Ethical Behavior Inventory. …

Effects Of A High Fiber-High Carbohydrate Diet On Selected Blood Chemistries Of Post-Myocardial Infarction Clients, Evelyn Mckinney Baskin Oct 1985

Effects Of A High Fiber-High Carbohydrate Diet On Selected Blood Chemistries Of Post-Myocardial Infarction Clients, Evelyn Mckinney Baskin

MSN Research Projects

This was a quasi-experimental study designed to determine the difference in blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels of subjects post-myocardial infarction (post-MI) who practiced the high fiber-high carbohydrate diet and subjects post-MI who did not practice the diet. The researcher had hypothesized that when the blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides of post-MI subjects who were practicing the high fiber-high carbohydrate diet were compared to those who were not practicing the d i e t , there would be no significant difference. There was a total of 18 subjects in the study, two groups with nine participants in each group. The …
