The Muek-Lek Women's Dairy Project In Thailand, Aruna Rao Jan 1990

The Muek-Lek Women's Dairy Project In Thailand, Aruna Rao

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This issue of SEEDS describes a project that was started in 1985 to encourage the growth of a new agricultural sector, dairy farming, in Thailand. While the major aim of the project was to increase incomes of rural families in the Muek-Lek Land Reform Area in Saraburi Province, Central Thailand, it also sought to integrate women into dairying activities, and offer these women, whether married or single, access to credit. The Muek-Lek Dairy Project is unique in that it channeled government resources and secured commercial bank financing to make women the key participants in a relatively new and growing agricultural …

Use Of A Bath Calendar As A Cue For Bathing For Patients Suffering From Alzheimer's Disease, Cathy Jean Bailey Jan 1990

Use Of A Bath Calendar As A Cue For Bathing For Patients Suffering From Alzheimer's Disease, Cathy Jean Bailey

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

This pilot study determined the ability of Alzheimer patients to recognize bath day using a bath calendar with a specific visual cue to denote bath day. A quasi-experimental design using a control and experimental group receiving a pre and post test was employed. Sixteen subjects scoring on the MSQ in the middle dementia area and living in an area nursing home participated in this study. Caregivers of subjects in the experimental group were responsible for reinforcing the cue to the subjects daily for four (4) weeks. Pre and post recognition and MSQ scores were tallied and differences between groups were …

Intoxication And Aggression, Jeffrey Fagan Jan 1990

Intoxication And Aggression, Jeffrey Fagan

Faculty Scholarship

Evidence of an association between use of illicit substances and aggressive behavior is pervasive. But the precise causal mechanisms by which aggression is influenced by intoxicants are still not well understood. Research on intoxication and aggression often has overlooked the nonviolent behavior of most substance users, controlled use of substances, and the evidence from other cultures of a weak or nonexistent relation between substance use and aggression. There is only limited evidence that ingestion of substances is a direct, pharmacological cause of aggression. The temporal order of substance use and aggression does not indicate a causal role for intoxicants. Research …

The Effects Of Passive Warming On Muscle Injury, Timothy Strickler, Terry Malone, William E. Garrett Jan 1990

The Effects Of Passive Warming On Muscle Injury, Timothy Strickler, Terry Malone, William E. Garrett

Peer Reviewed Articles

This study investigated the effects of passive warming on the biomechanical properties of the musculotendinous unit. Paired tibialis anterior (TA) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles in the rabbit hindlimb were passively heated to different temperatures and then subjected to controlled strain injury. The parameters examined were: 1) percent increase in length to failure, 2) force to failure, 3) energy absorbed by the musculotendinous unit to failure, and 4) site of failure. Warmed (39°C ± 0.5°C) TA (P ≤ 0.01) and EDL (P ≤ 0.05) muscles achieved a greater increase in length from rest before failing than did their contralateral …

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy, Jamsheer J Talati Jan 1990

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy, Jamsheer J Talati

Section of Urology

After circumcision the first operations done on man were for bladder stone. Done by charlatans the operation often resulted in loss of life and caused the early lithotomists to maintain a peripatetic existence, vanishing from the town the night after surgery was performed. About two centuries ago stones became a common disease amongst kings: surgeons took over from the charlatans and commenced blind skilful mechanical lithotripsy where a curved instrument was introduced per urethram, its jaws opened to engage the stone which was then crushed by a mechanical (screw driven) closure of the jaws. Now-a-days urinary bladder lithotripsy is done …

Phenotypic And Functional Properties Of B Lymphocytes From Aged Mice, Subbarao Bondada, Joan Morris, Richard J. Kryscio Jan 1990

Phenotypic And Functional Properties Of B Lymphocytes From Aged Mice, Subbarao Bondada, Joan Morris, Richard J. Kryscio

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Phenotypic and functional properties of B lymphocytes from individual young and old mice of different inbred strains were studied. B lymphocyte subpopulation defined by the ratios of the densities of cell surface IgM and IgD were found to be altered with age. However, such alterations in B cell subsets were found only in 30-40% of the old mice. B cell mitogenic responses to anti-μ and anti-Lyb2 antibodies were decreased in a majority of DBA/2 mice. Proliferative responses to LPS and antiμ were reduced only in a minority of CBA/Ca mice but there was a very good correlation in the responsiveness …

Impact Of Stress And Coping On Adherence And Health Status In Patients With Hypertension, Diane Darby Goldberger Dnsc, Mn, Rn Jan 1990

Impact Of Stress And Coping On Adherence And Health Status In Patients With Hypertension, Diane Darby Goldberger Dnsc, Mn, Rn

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe and explain the impact of demographic variables (age, educational level, time since diagnosis) and subsequent psychosocial variables (perceived stress, ways of coping, professional support, and social support) on adherence and, ultimately, on health status (blood pressure, psychological symptoms, and subjective health) in patients with essential hypertension whose health care was managed by a nurse. Because nurses manage the therapeutic regimens of these patients, it is necessary to identify those factors that influence adherence and thus the health of hypertensive individuals. The transactional framework of stress, appraisal, and coping of Lazarus and Folkman …

Fusion Of Simian Immunodeficiency Virus With Liposomes And Erythrocyte Ghost Membranes: Effects Of Lipid Composition, Ph And Calcium, Charles E. Larsen, D. R. Alford, L. J.T. Young, T. P. Mcgraw, Nejat Düzgüneş

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Simian immunodeficiency virus from macaques (SIV(mac)) is closely related in its structure and biological activity to human immunodeficiency virus, and is the best animal model for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. We investigated the kinetics of membrane fusion between SIV(mac) and phospholipid vesicles and the effects of various parameters on this process. Purified SIV(mac) was labelled with octadecyl rhodamine B chloride, and fusion was continuously monitored as the dilution of the probe in target membranes. These studies show that SIV(mac) fusion is strongly dependent upon the liposome composition. Fusion with pure cardiolipin (CL) liposomes is significantly faster than with CL/dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) …
