Clinical Anatomy Of The Frenulum Of The Oral Vestibule., Joe Iwanaga, Naoshi Takeuchi, Rod J Oskouian, R Shane Tubbs
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Introduction The frenula of the oral vestibule include the labial and buccal frenula. Abnormal labial and buccal frenula can affect facial esthetics and oral cavity function by retracting the gingival margin, creating a median diastema, and limiting lip movement. Because of the lack of information on these structures, we aimed to clarify their anatomy. Methods A total of 34 sides from 17 fresh frozen cadaveric Caucasian heads were used in the present study. The specimens were derived from 11 male and 6 female adult cadavers. The relationships between the frenulum of the mucosa and the tissue underneath the mucosa was …

More and more universities are pursuing interdisciplinary academic activities that span across department and college boundaries. Administrative structures to facilitate such programs are difficult to establish within traditional university frameworks consisting of disciplinary departments and colleges. Often interdisciplinary programs are housed in a traditional disciplinary department or college, or in a standalone center reporting to a college dean or the provost. The difficulty of these structures is obtaining broad buy-in from faculty across departments and having disciplinary degree programs include interdisciplinary coursework.
To overcome the difficulties described above, an innovative shared department structure that fosters collaborations to advance interdisciplinary education …
An Ethical Evaluation Of The Modern Pharmaceutical Industry, Kaitlyn Drennan
An Ethical Evaluation Of The Modern Pharmaceutical Industry, Kaitlyn Drennan
Dialogue & Nexus
Lack of transparency, wrongdoings, and unlawful promotion characterize the healthcare industry; these are especially prevalent within the pharmaceutical industry. Consequently, an investigation into the evidence of the corruption and the ethical infringement is needed. In this paper, I will evaluate the pharmaceutical industry’s adherence to the three major branches of ethics. The ever-increasing prices of pharmaceutical products, especially medications used for the combating of anaphylaxis and cancer, coupled with the compensatory-based medication promotion and research points to a major crisis in the realm of social justice. These examples, among many other current issues, lead to difficulties in individuals receiving the …
Perceived Patient-Pharmacist Communication And Diabetes Management: Assessing Medication Adherence Among Older Patients, Cecilia Flores Sandoval
Perceived Patient-Pharmacist Communication And Diabetes Management: Assessing Medication Adherence Among Older Patients, Cecilia Flores Sandoval
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
With 50% of patients in North America not taking their medications as they should (Brown & Bussell, 2011), a better understanding of medication adherence among older patients could be helpful to health professionals and service providers. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the perceived pharmacist-patient quality of communication is associated with diabetes medication adherence. Eighty-four older adults from the Primary Care Diabetes Support Program were recruited. Diabetes medication adherence and pharmacist-patient quality of communication were measured using self-report questionnaires. No significant correlation was found between medication adherence and perceived pharmacist-patient quality of communication. Results indicated a significant …

An Anatomical Study Of The Hyperpallium Densocellulare In The Pigeon (Columba Livia), Sara Leilani Kellogg
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The hyperpallium densocellulare (HD) is an avian cerebral structure, the origin of which remains unclear and considered to be critical to the understanding of the non-mammalian forebrain evolution. The main goal of this investigation was to clarify the anatomical characteristics and behavioral implications of HD, which had been assumed to be a homogeneous unitary entity. This project had three specific aims: 1) To identify possible subdivisions of HD in terms of cytoarchitecture, Substance P distribution, and connections based on unpublished (Aim 1a) as well as published data (Aim 1b); 2) To identify the unknown connections of these subdivisions by using …

Absence of the maxillary lateral incisor creates an aesthetic problem which can be managed in various ways. The condition requires careful treatment planning and consideration of the options and outcomes following either space closure or prosthetic replacement. Recent developments in restorative dentistry have warranted a re-evaluation of the approach to this clinical situation. Factors relating both to the patient and the teeth, including the presentation of malocclusion and the effect on the occlusion must be considered. The objective of this study was to describe the etiology, prevalence and alternative treatment modalities for dental agenesis and to present a clinical case …

Primary Care And Mental Health Integration In Coordinated Care Organizations, Robin Lynn Baker
Primary Care And Mental Health Integration In Coordinated Care Organizations, Robin Lynn Baker
Dissertations and Theses
The prevalence of untreated and undertreated mental health concerns and the comorbidity of chronic conditions and mental illness has led to greater calls for the integration of primary care and mental health. In 2012, the Oregon Health Authority authorized 16 Coordinated Care Organizations (CCO) to partner with their local communities to better coordinate physical, behavioral, and dental health care for Medicaid recipients. One part of this larger effort to increase coordination is the integration of primary care and mental health services in both primary care and community mental health settings.
The underlying assumption of CCOs is that organizations have the …

Background and Objective
Adiponectin is produced by adipose cells and is considered an anti‐inflammatory molecule. In contrast, C‐reactive protein (CRP) has been identified as a hallmark of systemic inflammation and used as a risk marker of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Of interest was the relationship of these two biomarkers to oral health and CVD risk.
Material and Methods
This investigation examined these two molecules in serum and unstimulated whole saliva of patients within 48 h of an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) compared to control subjects. We hypothesized a differential response in these biomolecules resulting from the heart attack that would be …

Background and Objective
Periodontal diseases are a major public health concern leading to tooth loss and have also been shown to be associated with several chronic systemic diseases. Smoking is a major risk factor for the development of numerous systemic diseases, as well as periodontitis. While it is clear that smokers have a significantly enhanced risk for developing periodontitis leading to tooth loss, the population varies regarding susceptibility to disease associated with smoking. This investigation focused on identifying differences in four broad sets of variables, consisting of: (i) host‐response molecules; (ii) periodontal clinical parameters; (iii) antibody responses to periodontal pathogens …

Effect Of Corticosteroid On Safety And Efficacy For Actinic Keratosis Therapy With Ingenol Mebutate, Shreya Amin
Effect Of Corticosteroid On Safety And Efficacy For Actinic Keratosis Therapy With Ingenol Mebutate, Shreya Amin
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Actinic keratoses are common premalignant lesions that occur in fair-skinned individuals with high cumulative ultraviolet exposure. Monotherapy with ingenol mebutate has been known to cause local skin reactions, such as erythema, which reduces safety. Clobetasol propionate has worked well with other actinic keratosis therapies to reduce inflammation, but its role with ingenol mebutate is not well understood. The effect of concurrent application of clobetasol propionate with ingenol mebutate to reduce local skin reactions without impacting efficacy has not yet been investigated. We are proposing a superiority trial for safety as well as a non-inferiority trial for effectiveness. We will conduct …

Satisfaction Among Early And Mid-Career Dentists In A Metropolitan Dental Hospital In China, Xiaoxi Cui, David G. Dunning, Na An
Journal Articles: College of Dentistry
A growing body of research has examined career satisfaction among dentists using a standardized instrument, dentist satisfaction survey (DSS). This project examined career satisfaction of early to mid-career dentists in China, a population whose career satisfaction, heretofore, has not been studied. This is an especially critical time to examine career satisfaction because of health care reform measures being implemented in China. A culturally sensitive Chinese-language version of the DSS (CDSS) was developed and electronically administered to 367 early and mid-career dentists in a tertiary dental hospital in Beijing, China. One hundred and seventy respondents completed the survey. The average total …
