Differential Stimulation Of Monocytes To Secrete Secretory Leukocyte Protease Inhibitor By Lipopolysaccharide Of Periodontal Pathogens, Jason Todd Primm Apr 2009

Differential Stimulation Of Monocytes To Secrete Secretory Leukocyte Protease Inhibitor By Lipopolysaccharide Of Periodontal Pathogens, Jason Todd Primm

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), or endotoxin, is the major component of the outer surface of gram-negative bacteria. LPS is a potent activator of cells of the immune and inflammatory systems, including macrophages, monocytes, and endothelial cells, and contributes to systemic changes known as septic shock. Each LPS molecule has three regions: oligosaccharide, core, and lipid A. Oligosaccharide is exposed on the cell surface, and lipid A anchors LPS in the outer membrane. Recent studies from our lab demonstrated that LPS of periodontal pathogens suppresses neutrophil's ability to secrete super oxide ions and also shown it to interfere with neutrophil chemotaxis. These factors …

Serum Anti-Phosphorylcholine And Anti-Cardiolipin Concentrations Following Periodontal Scaling And Root Planing, Reve W. Chaston Jan 2006

Serum Anti-Phosphorylcholine And Anti-Cardiolipin Concentrations Following Periodontal Scaling And Root Planing, Reve W. Chaston

Theses and Dissertations

Atherosclerosis is an insidious disease with serious morbidity and mortality including ischemic heart disease, stroke, and myocardial infarction. This condition is progressive and can start early in life eventually leading to large plaques and arterial occlusion. Two key components of this process are the immune system and lipids; in particular, LDL which accumulates within the arterial walls and macrophages which recognize and engulf oxidized-LDL (oxLDL) to form foam cells. Knowing that certain antibodies directed against bacterial antigens such as phosphorylcholine (PC) and cardiolipin (CL) show opsonizing cross-reactivity with oxLDL it can be proposed that there is a link between immune …

Effectiveness Of A Hydrogen Peroxide, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Bicarbonate Dentifrice Upon Microbiota Associated With Periodontitis, Jill M. Modi Jul 1986

Effectiveness Of A Hydrogen Peroxide, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Bicarbonate Dentifrice Upon Microbiota Associated With Periodontitis, Jill M. Modi

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a hydrogen peroxide, sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate dentifrice upon quantitative changes in the sulcular microbial species Bacteroides melaninogenicus and in the gingival condition and plaque accumulation associated with periodontitis. Fifteen subjects from the Hampton Veteran's Administration Medical Center w e r e selected according to a standard criteria. Split mouth experimental design was used. One arch of each patient was assigned randomly to periodontal instrumentation. Half the mouth then was assigned randomly an experimental or a control dentifrice to be utilized once daily. culture analysis, the Gingival Index and …

Clinical Effectiveness Of Hydrogen Peroxide-Sodium Bicarbonate Paste On Human Periodontitis Treated With And Without Scaling And Root Planing, Sylvia M. Lyne Apr 1985

Clinical Effectiveness Of Hydrogen Peroxide-Sodium Bicarbonate Paste On Human Periodontitis Treated With And Without Scaling And Root Planing, Sylvia M. Lyne

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the main and interaction effects of two oral hygiene regimens and periodontal instrumentation on the periodontal health status of subjects between the ages of 18 and 70 over a two-month period. The sample consisted of 16 subjects with moderate periodontitis. A split-mouth design was used; subjects brushed with fluoridated toothpaste on one side of the mouth and brushed with a hydrogen peroxide-sodium bicarbonate paste on the contralateral side. For each treatment, scaling and root planing were randomly assigned to one arch. At two-week intervals, the periodontal health status was measured using the …
