Nursing Students Critical Thinking And Research Utilization, Salima Moez Meherali, Joanne Profetto-Mcgrath, Pauline Paul

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Background: In the nursing profession critical thinking (CT) has increasingly been the focus of investigation for the past several years. CT dispositions and skills are valuable in nursing practice. Nurses need complex thinking skills to effectively manage the fast-paced and constantly changing health care environments in which they work. CT is also vital in developing evidence-based nursing practice. Nurses who are disposed to think critically are more likely to critically interpret the available evidence, and able to make high quality judgments and draw valid inferences. Currently, no published studies could be located that specifically examined the relationship between Critical …

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

In 2013 an international taskforce of the ILAE shaped out a communal definition of Epilepsy.(2) This definition is useful for all or most practical purposes, thus more helpful in management. Epilepsy was defined as recurrent unprovoked seizures i.e 2 or more at least 24 hours apart. The revised practical definition implies that Epilepsy can be considered even after a single seizure in individuals who have other factors predictive of a second unprovoked seizure, a risk set at 60%. The factors include the diagnosis of an epilepsy syndrome, structural lesions like stroke, CNS infections, intraparenchymal contusions after trauma, as well as …

Serum Calcium And Magnesium Abnormalities In Patients With Status Epilepticus: A Single Centre Tertiary Care Experience, Uzma Jamil, Mazhar Badshah, Ali Zohair Nomani, Muhammad Irshad, Jamal Janjua

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Electrolyte imbalances frequently cause seizures, and these seizures may be the sole presenting symptom. Seizures are especially common in patients with sodium disorders, hypocalcemia, and hypomagnesemia. Successful management of patient seizures begins with the establishment of an accurate diagnosis of the underlying electrolyte disturbance, because rapid identification and correction of the disturbance is necessary to control seizures and prevent permanent brain damage. Objectives: To delineate the percentage of people with status epilepticus having calcium and magnesium deficiencies at admission. Methods: The study was carried out from April 2013 to October 2013 at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad, Pakistan. …

Oral Manifestations In Acute Leukemia As The First Sign; The Interdisciplinary Approach Of Diagnosis And Treatment, Paunica Stana, Giurgiu Marina, Dumitriu Anca

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Systemic diseases often present associated oral signs and symptoms, which can occur either from the beginning of the disease or during its evolution. In some cases the oral manifestations reveal an undetected and severe disease, like leukemia. According to the encountered oral signs and symptoms and their response to topical/ dental treatment, the dentist and physician should take into account specific additional tests, which could highlight a possible associated systemic disease.

The most frequent oral manifestations associated with leukemia are represented by paleness of oral mucosa/ local abnormal colour of the gum, gingival petechiae, ecchymosis, bleeding associating painless gingival hyperplasia, …

Solving The Mind-Body Problem Through Two Distinct Concepts: Internal-Mental Existence And Internal Mental Reality, Ion G. Motofei, David L. Rowland Nov 2015

Solving The Mind-Body Problem Through Two Distinct Concepts: Internal-Mental Existence And Internal Mental Reality, Ion G. Motofei, David L. Rowland

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

In a previous published paper, we initiated in this journal discussion about new perspectives regarding the organization and functioning of the mind, as a premise for addressing the mind-body problem. In this article, we continue focussing discussion on two distinct but interrelated concepts, internal-mental existence/ entity and internal-mental reality.

These two psycho-physiological subunits of the mind interact each other in the form of an internal-mental interaction, having no sense if one is isolated/ studied separately from the other. In other words, the mind (as a dynamic psycho-physiological construction) has no sense in the absence of this internal mental interaction that …

Severe Early Childhood Caries (S-ECC) is a terribly aggressive and devastating disease that is all too common in lower socio-economic children, but none more so that what is encountered in American Indian Tribes. Nationwide, approximately 27% of 2-5 year olds have decay while 62% percent of American Indian/Alaska Native children in the same age group have a history of decay (IHS 2010, NHANES 1999-2002). We have conducted a study of children from birth to 36 months of age on Pine Reservation to gain a better understanding of the variables that come into play in the development of this disease, from …

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Background: Cervical cancer places a substantial economic burden on our healthcare system. The three-dose human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine series is a cost-effective intervention to prevent HPV infection and resultant cervical cancer. Despite its efficacy, completion rates are low in young women aged 18 through 26 years. 1-2-3 Pap is a video intervention tested and proven to increase HPV vaccination completion rates.

Purpose: To provide the full scope of available evidence for 1-2-3 Pap, this study adds economic evidence to the intervention’s efficacy. This study tested the economies of scale hypothesis that the cost of 1-2-3 Pap intervention per number of …

Determination Of Dioctyl Phthalate (Dehp) Concentration In Polyvinyl Chloride (Pvc) Plastic Parts Of Toothbrushes, Ghazal Sadeghi, Elham Ghaderian, Anne O'Connor

The Downtown Review

Phthalates are chemicals that are widely used in daily products and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics, mainly because of their ability to enhance flexibility and durability. The presence of phthalates in various products contributes to the substantial exposure that all consumers may experience. Continuity in phthalate exposure has several side effects, including endocrine disruption, neurological damage, asthma, hormonal imbalances, obesity, infertility, genital defects, and testicular cancer. The purpose of this research experiment was to determine the Dioctyl phthalate (DEHP) concentration of PVC plastic parts of toothbrushes. The method used to conduct the experiment was Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. The result showed that …

Gold Mining And Unequal Exchange In Western Amazonia: A Theoretical Photo Essay, Gordon L. Ulmer

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

I combine fieldwork photography and ethnographic documentation of gold mining in Madre de Dios, Peru, to examine the localized material, social, environmental, and health outcomes of the global gold boom. This 'theoretical photo essay’ examines how local and global forces coalesce around gold mining and influence peoples and environments in Western Amazonia. I use embodiment theory in anthropology, ecological economics, and theories of underdevelopment to understand local consequences of the global gold trade and to elucidate how opulence and the machinations of capital accumulation in economic centers of the world occur at the expense of human lives and environments in …

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective To assess the accuracy of linear measurements from stitched and non-stitched cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in comparison to direct measurements. Materials and methods Ten dry human mandibles were marked with gutta-percha at reference points to obtain five vertical and five horizontal distances. CBCT using stitching and non-stitching programs were performed. All distances on CBCT images obtained using stitching and non-stitching programs were measured and compared with direct measurements. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated. Results The intraobserver ICCs of direct measurements were 0.998 to 1.000, and those of measurements on both non-stitched and stitched CBCT images …
