Background: Whether the traditional distinction between segmental and multifocal dystonia is clinically or scientifically useful remains unclear.
Objective: To evaluate whether idiopathic isolated adult-onset segmental and multifocal dystonia can be differentiated based on clinical features other than the contiguity of affected body regions.
Methods: We compared data on segmental and multifocal dystonia from two large dystonia databases established in the USA and Italy that used similar criteria for patient recruitment and assessment.
Results: Compared to segmental dystonia, multifocal dystonia was characterized by a higher proportion of men, a younger age at dystonia onset, a greater frequency of upper limb dystonia, …

The relationship between misophonia and sleep-related problems (SRPs) in youth is underexplored. This paucity of research is concerning because SRPs might be elevated among youth with misophonia. If left untreated, SRPs can contribute to long-term health consequences. Thus, in this study we examined the link between misophonia and SRPs in youth aged 8 to 17. In this study, we compared SRPs in 102 children and adolescents with clinically significant misophonia to SRPs in a normative youth sample and a sample of 94 youth with anxiety disorders. We also examined the extent to which SRPs were associated with misophonia severity. Approximately …

Vitiligo and lichen sclerosus (LS) are autoimmune dermatoses that may share overlapping clinical and histopathologic features, posing diagnostic challenges when they occur concurrently. We report a biopsy-confirmed case of vulvar vitiligo and LS in a 61-year-old woman presenting with pruritic, depigmented patches on the labia majora and minora. Histopathologic examination showed epidermal thinning with papillary dermal hyalinization and a dense, band-like lymphocytic infiltrate consistent with LS. Melan-A immunostaining demonstrated a complete absence of epidermal melanocytes, confirming concurrent vitiligo rather than LS-related post-inflammatory hypopigmentation. This case underscores the importance of correlating subtle clinical clues with melanocyte-specific immunostains to distinguish coexistent vitiligo …

Exploring Adolescent Hearing Aid Usage And Appearance Of Psychiatric Symptoms In Adolescents Using Hearql-28 Surveys, Courtney J. Austin, Dylan Chan
MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years
Approximately 2% of DHH people in need of mental health services actually receive these services. Among pediatric hearing loss populations, co-occurring cognitive and physical impairments are risk factors for poor mental health status. Due to language barriers and isolation, more children with hearing loss do not have access to mental health services. Cochlear implants have been shown to improve mental health status among the DHH population. Current literature focuses on the mental health status of children with cochlear implants, with little focus on hearing aid users. Using HEAR28 data and surveys, we can quantify the incidence of psychiatric symptoms among …

"Role Of Preoperative Echocardiography In Resource-Limited Settings And Delayed Patient Care", Zamanali Khakhar, Shamshudin Mohammedali, Sayed Karar
General Surgery, East Africa
Preoperative echocardiography has long been used as an effective diagnostic tool in the preoperative assessment of surgical candidates. In elderly patients, hip fractures represent a critical medical emergency with a high risk of complications that can occur if not addressed promptly. Unnecessary preoperative investigations may lead to delays and potentially compromise the quality of patient care. The motivation to evaluate the utility of preoperative echocardiography in select clinical scenarios, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where resources are limited, arose from the case of a 72-year-old female who presented to a tertiary hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, with a right-sided …

Morphea With Seronegative Inflammatory Arthritis And Normal Acute Phase Reactants: A Case Report, Balakrishnan Navaneethakrishnan, Mahabaleshwar Mamadapur
Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Localised scleroderma, also known as morphea, is an immune-mediated fibrosing disorder that primarily affects the skin and subcutaneous tissues. While traditionally considered purely a cutaneous disease, extracutaneous manifestations (especially inflammatory arthritis) are increasingly being appreciated. The combined presence of morphea and inflammatory arthritis is rare and can be difficult to diagnose, particularly when inflammatory markers and serological testing are non-contributory.
Case Summary : We describe a 41-year-old woman with long-standing biopsy-proven morphea who over 2 years developed chronic, asymmetric inflammatory arthritis of the left wrist and hand small joints. On examination, she had active synovitis with restricted movements of her …

Tumor evolution involves genetic, transcriptional, and phenotypic alterations that shape cancer cell behavior and interactions with the microenvironment. While single‐cell technologies have advanced our understanding of this process, spatial dynamics remain incompletely characterized. Here, whole‐exome sequencing (WES), imaging mass cytometry (IMC), and spatial transcriptomics (ST) were integrated to study molecular evolution and immune responses in two lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) mouse models: a genetically engineered model (129S4/Sv‐KrasLSL‐G12D, termed 129S4 K) and a carcinogen‐induced precancer model (129S4 U). Compared to 129S4 K, 129S4 U tumors exhibited higher mutational, neoantigen but lower copy number variation (CNV) burdens at matched developmental timepoints, consistent with …

PURPOSE: Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor in childhood and adolescence. Many patients face long-term impairments in their mobility and function after treatment, leading to a decrease in their quality of life. Exercise has been shown to improve functional recovery and improve quality of life in patients with cancer, though data specific to children with osteosarcoma are sparse. Exercise has also been shown to be feasible in patients undergoing chemotherapy, with numerous potential benefits to health and quality of life. To design the most effective exercise interventions for children and adolescents with osteosarcoma, we must first understand the …

PURPOSE: Medical physicists are essential healthcare professionals who bridge the gap between technology and patient care, particularly in radiation oncology and medical imaging. With the profession expanding its clinical and global roles, the need for competencies beyond technical expertise-such as communication, leadership, and cultural awareness-is increasingly evident. These competencies, commonly referred to as soft skills, are critical for patient-centered care but remain insufficiently integrated into formal education and training pathways. The aim of the present work was to identify soft skills relevant to medical physics practice and investigate where in a career they are acquired and used.

INTRODUCTION: Acetabular fractures in elderly patients are often the result of low-energy trauma and are complicated by osteopenia, comorbidities, and limited physiologic reserve. Minimally invasive approaches, such as percutaneous fixation have emerged as viable alternatives to open reduction in selected fracture patterns.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 76-year-old male with a history of coronary artery disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and osteopenia who sustained a comminuted right anterior column and posterior hemitransverse acetabular fracture following a ground-level fall. His hospital course was complicated by rhabdomyolysis and elevated troponin levels, necessitating cardiac evaluation, which demonstrated normal left ventricular function and …

Breast surgery for aesthetic purposes, such as breast augmentation or breast reduction, and breast reconstruction after cancer treatment require an accurate structural (anatomical) and mechanical (functional) understanding of the breast components, including the fascial-ligamentous support system of the breast, to achieve optimal results. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive description of the mechanical behavior of the ligamentous and fascial connective tissues of the human female breast. Fasciae and ligaments obtained from 17 patients between 35 and 85 years of age who were undergoing mastectomy and three female cadavers were tested. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted, and three constitutive models …

Purpose: To evaluate pharmacokinetic modeling methods for quantification of tissue perfusion/permeability with hyperpolarized 13C urea.
Methods: Three models for quantitative analysis of dynamic HP urea imaging data were proposed and evaluated in numerical simulations and a thyroid cancer mouse model. A multicompartment model resembling the extended Tofts model for DCE-MRI (Model I) and two simplified models were used. The simplified models each eliminate a volume parameter representing vascular (Model II) or impermeable cellular space (Model III). Signal curves were generated from Model I, and models were fit to these synthetic data to quantify the effects of acquisition settings, bias in …

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
In this case report, we describe a patient who presented to their primary care provider with abdominal pain after returning from travel to the Caribbean island of St. Croix. The patient reported two weeks of epigastric abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, and night sweats. Following an initial evaluation that revealed eosinophilia with unclear etiology, they were referred to an infectious disease clinic. Through a targeted infectious evaluation and workup, the patient was diagnosed with acute schistosomiasis syndrome and was treated with praziquantel. Treatment resulted in the complete resolution of her symptoms, and follow-up laboratory evaluation showed complete resolution of her eosinophilia. …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at risk of long-term skeletal muscle deficits following intensive therapies during critical periods of growth. This review aimed to synthesize approaches for assessing muscle quantity, quality, and function in CCS and to quantify deficits relative to healthy peers. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science from inception to June 2024, with an update in November 2025. Studies including CCS who had completed cancer treatment and reported measures of muscle quantity, quality, or physical function were eligible. A three-level mixed-effects model meta-analysis was conducted. Associations between muscle …

Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA) is caused by the accumulation of undegraded glycosaminoglycans due to the deficiency of the N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase (GALNS) enzyme. MPS IVA manifests as progressive systemic skeletal dysplasia. Gene therapy (GT) is potentially a one-time treatment in which the enzyme is continuously produced, circulated, and delivered to target tissues. However, immune responses to gene products can diminish therapeutic efficacy. We hypothesized that oral delivery of tolerogenic peptides induces immune tolerance to human GALNS (hGALNS) in MPS IVA mice, enhancing therapeutic efficacy. Neonatal mice deficient in mouse GALNS (mGALNS) were treated orally with three T-cell/B-cell epitope peptides or hGALNS …
